Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in the form of nanospheres from a few nm to 100 nm in diameter were synthesized in a controlled manner using a combination of two reducing agents: sodium borohydride (SBH) and trisodium citrate (TSC). The influence of the size of AgNPs on antibacterial activity was investigated with different concentrations of AgNPs on two types of bacteria:(PA) andresistant (SA) while the positive control was50g/ml and the negative control was water. Monitoring and minimizing the prevalence of failed transfer of passive immunity (FTPI) in dairy replacement calves within the first week of life is crucial for calf health and farm profitability. In this study, a systematic literature search and meta-analysis were conducted on papers reporting the prevalence of FTPI in calves from pasture-based dairy farms in Australia and New Zealand. Two search methods, a "traditional method" and a "search engine method", were conducted to identify published studies on FTPI in Australia and New Zealand.

Chemical adsorption of non-metal atoms may lead to the emergence of novel features in two-dimensional (2D) materials. In this work, the electronic and magnetic properties of graphene-like XC (X = Si and Ge) monolayers with adsorbed H, O, and F atoms are investigated using spin-polarized first-principles calculations. Deeply negative adsorption energies suggest strong chemical adsorption on XC monolayers.

Bovine colostrum contains a high concentration of immune-related microRNAs (miRNAs) that are packaged in exosomes and are very stable. In this study, 5 immune-related miRNAs (miR-142-5p, miR-150, miR-155, miR-181a, and miR-223) were quantified in dam blood, colostrum, and calf blood using reverse transcription quantitative PCR. Their levels in calf blood after colostrum ingestion were investigated to assess whether miRNAs are transferred from the dam to newborn calves.

The objective of this observational study was to estimate the incidence of inadequate transfer of passive immunity (ITPI) on five pasture-based dairy farms in South Australia. Heifer calf uptake of colostrum was evaluated within the first 1−7 days of age (n = 2638) using a digital refractometer to estimate each calf’s serum total protein concentration, as an indicator of colostrum uptake. Results of <51 g/L indicated inadequate transfer of passive immunity (ITPI).

Introduction: The present study proposes to validate the Driver Ecological Glare Test (DEGT), a test developed to measure the benefit of a headlight glare Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), by comparing it to a laboratory glare test.

Method: Twenty-four participants, aged from 55 to 70 years, were recruited to complete a visual examination, including monocular halo size measurement for both eyes using Vision Monitor device (MonCv3; Metrovision). Mass drug administration (MDA), the presumptive antimalarial treatment of an entire population to clear the subclinical parasite reservoir, is a strategy to accelerate malaria elimination. We report a cluster randomised trial to assess the effectiveness of dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine (DP) MDA in reducing falciparum malaria incidence and prevalence in 16 remote village populations in Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia, and the Lao People's Democratic Republic, where artemisinin resistance is prevalent.

Direct chemiluminescence emission from the reaction of acidic permanganate and organic compounds was employed for determining the chemical oxygen demand (COD) in water (1-step CL COD). Due to the diversity of organic pollutants in water, there are no standards for COD measurements, and many compounds do not show any chemiluminescence signal in the 1-step CL COD method. As a result, this method shows a low correlation with the conventional COD method.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the proportion of influenza-like illness (ILI) attributable to specific viruses during the influenza A(H1N1)2009 pandemic and to describe the demographic and clinical characteristics of ILI due to respiratory viruses in Belgium. Nasopharyngeal swabs were collected from ILI patients by general practitioners (GPs) and paediatricians (PediSurv) and analysed for viruses. Of 139 samples collected from children <5 years of age by PediSurv, 86 were positive, including 28 influenza (20%), 27 respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) (19%), 21 rhinovirus (17%), 12 human metapneumovirus (hMPV) (9%) and ten parainfluenza virus (PIV) (7%).

From 1 January to 14 April 2011, a total of 155 measles cases were notified in Belgium, whereas throughout 2010, there were only 40. Of the 103 cases with known vaccination status, 87% had not been vaccinated with measles-mumps-rubella vaccine. The resurgence of measles is the consequence of insufficient vaccine coverage in previous years.

Rodents cause significant damage to lowland irrigated rice crops in the Red River Delta of Vietnam. A four-year study was conducted in 1999-2002 to examine the effectiveness of applying rodent control practices using the principles of ecologically based pest management. Four 100-150 ha study sites adjacent to villages were selected and farmers on two treated sites were asked to follow a set of rodent management practices, while farmers on the untreated sites were asked not to change their typical practices.

We collected paraffin-embedded myelocytomatoses induced by subgroup J avian leukosis virus (ALV-J) in French poultry from 1992 to 2000. We used nested PCR to obtain the U3 LTR and the E element sequences that encompass putative binding sites for transcription factors. We observed minor mutations in the U3 sequences that rarely affected transcription factor binding sites, thus preserving the transcriptional potential of the U3 LTR.

The present work aimed to compare some features of the meiotic process which develops in the testis of pubertal rats, in vivo and in vitro, paying special attention to the time-course of the phenomenon. The differentiation of spermatocytes was assessed in testes of 20- to 46-day-old rats and in tubule segments of 20- or 28-day-old rats cultured over a 4-week period. Very similar results were obtained in vivo and in vitro, during the first week of culture, when considering the changes in the cell populations of different ploidy, the gene expression of germ cells, the kinetics of differentiation of BrdU-labeled early or middle pachytene spermatocytes and the levels of apoptosis in the different cell populations.

Two melanocortin receptors MC2-R (ACTH-receptor) and MC5-R are expressed in the adult lamb adrenal cortex. In this work, we have studied the time-course of expression of these two receptors during ovine fetal development. MC2-R expression progressively increases from day 60 to day 140 of gestation (x3), then more rapidly before parturition and remains constant in the newborn.

The aim of the present study was to set up a culture system allowing most of the meiotic phase of rat spermatogenesis to occur in vitro. For that purpose, the differentiation of spermatogenic cells was monitored by three criteria: 1) examination of expression of genes specifically expressed at a high level in pachytene spermatocytes (the phosphoprotein p19 [p19] and the testis-specific histone TH2B) or in round spermatids (transition protein 1 [TP1] and transition protein 2 [TP2]) by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR); 2) ploidy analysis; and 3) cytological and immunocytochemical study of the germ cells. In the first trial, we determined the changes in the ratios of p19:TP1 and TH2B:TP2 mRNA-related PCR products in the whole testis of rats between 18 and 60 days postpartum and related those results to the sequential appearance of the various types of spermatogenic cells during that period.

We have shown previously that chronic treatment with glucocorticoids enhances both ACTH-induced cAMP production and ACTH- or 8Br-cAMP-induced steroidogenesis of cultured ovine adrenocortical cells. This treatment has been shown to involve an increase in the number of ACTH receptors. The present study aimed to explore the mechanism of this effect of glucocorticoids on ACTH receptors.
