A novel molecular structure that bridges the fields of molecular optical cycling and molecular photoswitching is presented. It is based on a photoswitching molecule azobenzene functionalized with one and two CaO- groups, which can act as optical cycling centers (OCCs). This paper characterizes the electronic structure of the resulting model systems, focusing on three questions: (1) how the electronic states of the photoswitch are impacted by a functionalization with an OCC; (2) how the states of the OCC are impacted by the scaffold of the photoswitch; and (3) whether the OCC can serve as a spectroscopic probe of isomerization.

After nearly 50 years of searching, the vacuum ultraviolet Th nuclear isomeric transition has recently been directly laser excited and measured with high spectroscopic precision. Nuclear clocks based on this transition are expected to be more robust than and may outperform current optical atomic clocks. These clocks also promise sensitive tests for new physics beyond the standard model.

In 1909, 21-year-old Bernadette was hospitalized after the parish priest deemed her to be suffering from "puerperal insanity." She was committed to Saint-Jean-de-Dieu, separated from her newborn and husband, who would send dozens of letters inquiring about her health and longing for the day she could return home. Sadly, that return never happened.

AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is an energy sensor that regulates cellular functions in response to changes in energy availability. However, whether AMPK activity is spatially regulated, and the implications for cell function, have been unclear. We now report that AMPK associates with the Golgi, and that its activation by two specific pharmacological activators leads to Golgi fragmentation similar to that caused by the antibiotic Golgicide A, an inhibitor of Golgi-specific Brefeldin A resistance factor-1 (GBF1), a guanine nucleotide exchange factor that targets ADP-ribosylation factor 1 (ARF1).

Three evidence-based psychotherapies for depression (D-EBPs)-cognitive behavioral therapy for depression, acceptance and commitment therapy for depression, and interpersonal psychotherapy-are available in Veterans Health Administration (VHA) through its training initiative. However, training initiatives are not sufficient to move effective treatments into routine practice. Patient and clinic factors can impact evidence-based psychotherapies use.

Article Synopsis
  • - Sjögren's disease (SD) is an autoimmune condition linked to specific autoantibodies, and a case study showed that a previously healthy individual developed SD after primary Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection, resulting in multiple autoantibody productions.
  • - Researchers examined immune responses to various autoantigens and found that anti-Ro52 and anti-Ro60 autoantibodies started to appear shortly after EBV infection, with levels continuing to rise alongside other antibodies long after the initial infection.
  • - The study concludes that EBV infection can trigger specific autoantibody responses through different mechanisms, and it notes that some healthy individuals can produce certain autoantibodies independently of the EBV response.

Article Synopsis
  • African American adults with Type 2 diabetes are increasingly affected by the disease, and the connection between their diet quality and glycemic control (measured by HbA1c levels) is not well understood.
  • This study analyzed data from 273 African American adults with Type 2 diabetes, using dietary recalls and blood samples to assess the impact of processed versus unprocessed foods on blood sugar levels.
  • Results showed that higher consumption of ultraprocessed foods was linked to higher HbA1c levels, while a diet rich in unprocessed or minimally processed foods was associated with better glycemic control.

Background: Whether or not to progress from a pilot study to a definitive trial is often guided by pre-specified quantitative progression criteria with three possible outcomes. Although the choice of these progression criteria will help to determine the statistical properties of the pilot trial, there is a lack of research examining how they, or the pilot sample size, should be determined.

Methods: We review three-outcome trial designs originally proposed in the phase II oncology setting and extend these to the case of external pilots, proposing a unified framework based on univariate hypothesis tests and the control of frequentist error rates.

Article Synopsis
  • This study assessed the diagnostic value and cost-effectiveness of using the i-STAT® point-of-care analyzer for measuring cardiac troponin I (cTnI) levels in dogs and cats suspected of heart disease.
  • A total of 240 animals (120 dogs and 120 cats) were examined, comparing the results from i-STAT® with two established laboratory assays (IMMULITE® 2000 and ACCESS®).
  • While the i-STAT® method effectively differentiated normal and elevated cTnI levels, caution is advised when interpreting high cTnI values, as there is a notable bias compared to traditional assays, particularly important for diagnosing severe cardiac conditions like myocarditis or acute ischemia.

The term 'mental health crisis' is a widely used concept in clinical practice and research, appearing prominently in mental health literature across healthcare and social science disciplines. Within these contexts, the term is frequently either left undefined or defined rather narrowly, confined to clinical observations or guidelines targeted at healthcare providers and negating the multifaceted nature of crisis as described by those with lived experience. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to explore the characteristics of and provide a conceptual definition for the concept of 'mental health crisis'.

This brief report expands the results of a prior efficacy study that examined the effect of a letter addressing prospective clients' motivation and expectations for outpatient gambling disorder treatment on initial session attendance. The results of that efficacy study indicated more clients attended the initial session when receiving the letter (77%) compared to receiving a reminder telephone call (51%). The present study examines the effectiveness of messages addressing prospective clients' motivation and expectations for outpatient gambling treatment across an entire treatment system.
