Background: Vancomycin ranks amongst the most utilized antimicrobial agents in the treatment of serious β-lactam-resistant Gram-positive infections, but its use has been associated with nephrotoxicity. Reduction of acute kidney injury (AKI) has been reported in pre-clinical models with adjuvant montelukast. The purpose of the study was to ascertain if montelukast was associated with a reduction in the prevalence of vancomycin-associated AKI.

Objectives: Previous research suggests a one-size-fits-all approach to breast density notification may disadvantage culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) women. This study aimed to qualitatively explore CALD women's understanding and views of breast density, attitudes towards health services access, acceptability of notification and preferences for breast density communication ahead of population-based notification in Australia.

Methods: Online focus groups were conducted with CALD women of breast screening age (40-74 years) who spoke one of the five languages with the lowest English proficiency in Australia (Korean, Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese and Arabic).

Stochastic simulation modeling of the economics of providing additional living space for housed dairy cows.

The housed environment for dairy cattle is of critical importance to their health, wellbeing, and productivity. Lack of space is an important factor for housing quality assessment due to links with increased likelihood of disease. A recently published randomized controlled trial identified that greater living space provision increased lying time, milk volume production, and also increased time to conception.

Dynamin-1 (DNM1) is crucial for synaptic activity, neurotransmission, and associative memory, positioning it as a potential biomarker of cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI), a neurological consequence of cancer treatment characterized by memory loss, poor concentration, and impaired executive function. Through a stepwise approach, this study investigated the role of DNM1 in CRCI pathogenesis, incorporating both human data and animal models. The human study recruited newly diagnosed, chemotherapy-naïve adolescent and young adult cancer and non-cancer controls to complete a cognitive instrument (FACT-Cog) and blood draws for up to three time points.

There is increasing recognition of the crucial need for robust community engagement in health research and clinical trials. Despite this awareness, challenges persist in bridging the gap between researchers and communities. Much of the current discourse focuses on addressing issues such as cultural humility and equitable partnerships.

The use of a multimodal wound matrix to treat a variety of hard-to-heal wounds: a case series surveillance.

Objective: This case series examines the use of a multimodal wound matrix (MWM) trialled in a selection of clinical practice settings and on a variety of hard-to-heal wounds. The objective was to evaluate the effects of MWM and its performance in managing such wounds, regardless of clinical setting and ulcer type.

Method: Treatment of the MWM was conducted by independent wound care practitioners on wounds that were of >4 weeks duration.

Implementing Change Through an Outpatient Antibiotic Stewardship Program.

Introduction: We sought to implement a multipronged behavioral intervention to reduce and tailor antibiotic use for 2 common urologic outpatient procedures.

Methods: This study was a nonblinded intervention study that consisted of a preintervention phase (November 2018-January 2019), an intervention phase (January 2020-December 2020) in which a multipronged behavioral intervention was implemented, and a postintervention phase (January 2021-March 2021). We examined antibiotic use for cystoscopy and transrectal prostate biopsy at 3 separate urologic outpatient clinics.

Elevations in depression and anxiety symptoms prior to discharge from partial hospitalization.

Discharge from psychiatric treatment has been established as an emotionally intense and vulnerable time for patients; however, to date no studies have investigated symptoms directly preceding discharge and the impact on post-discharge outcomes. Our primary aim was to assess the prevalence of elevations in depression and anxiety symptoms prior to discharge from a partial hospitalization program (PHP). Our secondary aim was to assess whether these pre-discharge elevations predict post-discharge outcomes.

Methods: A scoping review was undertaken in line with recommendations from the Johanna Briggs Institute.

Desmopressin for prevention of bleeding for thrombocytopenic, critically ill patients undergoing invasive procedures: A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled feasibility trial.

Thrombocytopenic patients have an increased risk of bleeding when undergoing invasive procedures. In a multicentre, phase II, blinded, randomised, controlled feasibility trial, critically ill patients with platelet count 100 × 10/L or less were randomised 1:1 to intravenous desmopressin (0.3 µg/kg) or placebo before an invasive procedure.

Utilization of the Intimacy and Sexuality Expression Preference tool in long-term care: a case study.

Introduction: Sexual wellness plays a crucial role in an individual's quality of life, interpersonal relationships, and self-concept, particularly among older adults residing in residential aged care facilities, including those with dementia. However, there is currently a limited person-centered approach to understanding the unique preferences of each older person regarding their intimate and sexual behaviors. To address this gap, the (ISEP) tool was developed to facilitate meaningful discussions between healthcare professionals or workers and older individuals about their intimacy and sexuality needs and preferences.

Lipedematous Scalp: Presentation of a Rare Dermatological Condition.

Lipedematous scalp (LS) and lipedematous alopecia (LA) are uncommon dermatological conditions characterized by lipid accumulation within scalp tissue, leading to a thickened and boggy scalp. While the exact cause remains elusive, these conditions are believed to be on a spectrum of the same underlying disease process. LS/LA patients can experience dysesthesia of the scalp, but LA is associated with additional hair growth abnormalities.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia nodules in patients treated with celecoxib and/or finasteride have reduced levels of NADH dehydrogenase [ubiquinone] iron-sulfur protein 3, a mitochondrial protein essential for efficient function of the electron transport chain.

Background: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a condition generally associated with advanced age in men that can be accompanied by bothersome lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) including intermittency, weak stream, straining, urgency, frequency, and incomplete bladder voiding. Pharmacotherapies for LUTS/BPH include alpha-blockers, which relax prostatic and urethral smooth muscle and 5ɑ-reductase inhibitors such as finasteride, which can block conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone thereby reducing prostate volume. Celecoxib is a cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitor that reduces inflammation and has shown some promise in reducing prostatic inflammation and alleviating LUTS for some men with histological BPH.

Objective: Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) is a global concern as effective treatments are very limited. We previously used a modified susceptibility testing approach to predict growth suppression in carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales, but there are uncertainties about the generalizability of the model. The objective of this study is to verify if a similar approach can be extended to CRAB.

Objective: Evaluate whether total elbow replacement (TER) through a lateral approach is accurate and stable.

Animals: 12 skeletally mature large-breed dog cadavers were used.

Methods: Limb alignment, elbow joint motion, and collateral ligament laxity were evaluated preoperatively.

Delivery of Allied Health Interventions Using Telehealth Modalities: A Rapid Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials.

To determine whether allied health interventions delivered using telehealth provide similar or better outcomes for patients compared with traditional face-to-face delivery modes. A rapid systematic review using the Cochrane methodology to extract eligible randomized trials. Trials were eligible for inclusion if they compared a comparable dose of face-to-face to telehealth interventions delivered by a neuropsychologist, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, podiatrist, psychologist, and/or speech pathologist; reported patient-level outcomes; and included adult participants.

Early transcriptional similarities between two distinct neural lineages during ascidian embryogenesis.

In chordates, the central nervous system arises from precursors that have distinct developmental and transcriptional trajectories. Anterior nervous systems are ontogenically associated with ectodermal lineages while posterior nervous systems are associated with mesoderm. Taking advantage of the well-documented cell lineage of ascidian embryos, we asked to what extent the transcriptional states of the different neural lineages become similar during the course of progressive lineage restriction.

Calls to support co-designed and usable science to inform management of natural resources are growing. Making the shift will require diverse collaborations between those who hold, share, and use knowledge.
