In this study, novel near-infrared and attenuated total reflectance mid-infrared spectroscopic methods coupled with multivariate data analysis were established enabling the determination of thymol, rosmarinic acid, and the antioxidant capacity of Thymi herba. A new high-performance liquid chromatography method and UV-Vis spectroscopy were applied as reference methods. Partial least squares regressions were carried out as cross and test set validations.

This study examined the applicability of near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy coupled with multivariate data analysis (MVA) to determine the ideal harvest time of Verbena officinalis. NIR analyses were performed non-invasively on the fresh plant material based on the quantification of the key constituents verbenalin and verbascoside. Vibrational spectroscopic measurements were performed applying a conventional NIR benchtop device as well as a laboratory independent handheld NIR spectrometer.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated methods for removing paraffin components from oral cancer tissue spectra using three multivariate analysis techniques: Independent Component Analysis (ICA), Partial Least Squares (PLS), and Independent Component - Partial Least Square (IC-PLS).
  • All three methods effectively removed paraffin at similar levels, while Principal Component Analysis (PCA) failed to do so.
  • However, PLS and IC-PLS were less damaging to the cancer tissue spectral integrity compared to ICA, paving the way for using paraffin-removed spectra to create Raman images for better diagnosis alongside traditional staining methods.

During the last years, non-invasive or minimally invasive diagnostic tools in cancer diagnostics have become more important. Many fluorescence spectroscopic methodologies have been established for nearly all different kinds of cancer. The reason therefore is its high sensitivity, low amount of sample required, short testing time, and the suitability for in situ testing.

In the present study, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) imaging and data analysis methods were combined to study morphological and molecular patterns of St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum) in detail. For interpretation, FTIR imaging results were correlated with histological information gained from light microscopy (LM).

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) of the oral cavity and oropharynx represents more than 95% of all malignant neoplasms in the oral cavity. Histomorphological evaluation of this cancer type is invasive and remains a time consuming and subjective technique. Therefore, novel approaches for histological recognition are necessary to identify malignancy at an early stage.

The measurement of the physical and chemical ("physicochemical") properties of nanomaterials used in industry and science including chemistry, pharmacy, medicine, toxicology, etc., is time-consuming, expensive and requires a lot of experience of a well trained lab staff. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR; 4.

In this study the potential of new imaging techniques such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization (MALDI) profiling mass spectrometry ("MALDI Profiling") and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic imaging was evaluated to study morphological and molecular patterns of the potential medicinal fungus Hericium coralloides. For interpretation, the MALDI profiling, FTIR imaging and MRI results were correlated with histological information gained from Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Light Microscopy (LM). Additionally we tested several evaluation processes and optimized the methodology for use of complex FTIR images to monitor molecular patterns.

Prostate cancer has become one of the most common malignancies worldwide. Morphological and histomorphological evaluation of this disease is a well established technique for the cancer classification and has remained relatively unchanged since several decades, although it remains a time consuming and subjective technique, with unsatisfactory levels of inter- and intra-observer discrepancy. Novel approaches for histological recognition are necessary to identify and to investigate cancer in detail.

Constant development enabled Infrared (IR) spectroscopy to become a widely used, non-invasive tool for fast sample analyses with less to no pre-preparation. Furthermore, computational data handling is no more a limiting factor and hence, IR measurements are predestined for clinical diagnostics and drug analysis. Within this review the focus was put on clinical topics of high interest.

Peptide interaction is normally monitored by liquid chromatography (LC), liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (LC-MS), mass spectrometric (MS) methods such as MALDI-TOF/MS or capillary electrophoresis (CE). These analytical techniques need to apply either high pressure or high voltages, which can cause cleavage of newly formed bondages. Therefore, near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) is presented as a rapid alternative to monitor the interaction of glutathione and oxytocin, simulating physiological conditions.
