A study was carried out between April 1997 and October 1998 to determine the effect of the progesterone antagonist, Aglépristone (Alizine), for the prevention of pregnancy. 93 bitches were treated, because of mismating, with Aglépristone. The owners were then contacted 2 weeks and 6 to 12 months after treatment to gather any information on effects noted over this period.

Such minimally invasive surgery requires good muscle relaxation. However, the use of neuromuscular blocking agents in patients with myasthenia gravis may lead to prolonged apnoea after operation, thus necessitating mechanical ventilation of the lungs.

Background: The continual shortage of hearts for transplantation (HTx) led to the expansion of the donor pool by accepting older donors. We compared the medium-term follow-up of patients after HTx with older hearts (over the age of 63 years) with those of patients after HTx with younger hearts.
Patients And Methods: Since April 1994 we have used hearts for HTx from donors older than the age of 63 years.
The aim of the study was to validate a nonradioactive method for relative blood flow measurements in severely injured lungs that avoids labor-intensive tissue processing. The use of fluorescent-labeled microspheres was compared with the standard radiolabeled-microsphere method. In seven sheep, lung injury was established by using oleic acid.

Their resemblance to inhaled anesthetic agents suggests the possibility of application by vaporization. The authors' aim was to develop the technical means for perfluorocarbon vaporization and to investigate its effects on gas exchange and lung function in an ovine model of oleic acid-induced lung injury.

Objective: The term non-committed was used to define hearts in which the VSD was anatomically related to, or was close to, neither great vessel, being separated from both by considerable muscle. We report our experience of the surgical management of this subset, considered being of particular surgical relevance.
Methods: Between January 1987 and December 1997, 23 patients having double-outlet right ventricle (DORV) with non-committed VSD underwent biventricular repair.

Non-specific Inflammatory Bowel disease (IBD) is infrequently seen in the Arabs of the Arabian Peninsula. This paper documents the presentation and initial management of 101 such Arabs treated for inflammatory bowel disease between 1976 and 1994. Medical records were examined and patients were classified according to the Organisation Mondiale de Gastroenterologie diagnostic scoring system.

In clarifying the geometric relationship between LVOT orifice and mitral valve annulus (MVA) in eight normal subjects, the authors have endeavored to show how that a rigid mitral prosthesis might obstruct the LVOT based on the assumption that any rigid prosthesis necessarily follows the motion of the posterior half of the MVA (MVApost) in the course of every heart beat. During systole, the relationship between the MVApost and the approximated plane of the LVOT orifice was constant.

The images of the mitral valve annulus (MVA) and the LVOT orifice reconstructed in three dimensions were projected on the plane of the LV base. Calculating the areas of these projected images (i.

For the interpretation of the spatial relationship between the aortic root and mitral annulus, however, the 2D display is sometimes inadequate since it may not simultaneously capture these structures in each center. We developed a method to clarify this relationship in 3D based on magnetic resonance images.

Animals: 20 sexually intact, continent bitches and 21 spayed, incontinent bitches.
Procedure: Urethral pressure profiles before (resting) and after (stressed) insufflation of gas in the abdominal cavity were recorded in bitches under general anesthesia.
An analysis of three-dimensional movement of the mitral valve annulus (MVA) may address the question of geometrical change after mitral valve repair to preserve mitral annular function. Conventionally, annular contraction has been studied for this purpose. We investigated this geometrical change occurring in the anterior half of the MVA and discuss its clinical significance.

The goal of this treatment was to achieve an effect similar to colposuspension in female dogs with USMI. An increase in urethral length of an average of 28 mm was obtained (range, 5 to 50 mm, measured radiographically).
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAlthough chordal preserving mitral valve replacement is beneficial to cardiac function, the loss of flexibility of the annulus and consequent translational motion of the valve prosthesis during systole may cause potential left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction after surgery. The extent of the flexibility of the mitral valve annulus (MVA) necessary for the prosthetic valve to prevent potential LVOT obstruction was determined. The three dimensional images of the MVA at 0, 100, 200, and 300 msec delay from the electrocardiogram R wave were reconstructed from cine-mode magnetic resonance images in eight normal subjects.

The corneas of both eyes were clear and the pupils were dilated.

The following effects of trifluoperazine were found: (1) trifluoperazine inhibited oxygen uptake, the site of action being the mitochondria. Half-maximal inhibition occurred at concentrations around 50 microM; with 100 microM trifluoperazine the effect was already maximal.

Macroscopically, the uterus appeared normal except for one large and several smaller cysts attached to its antimesometrial side.

The influence of stevioside, the sweet glycoside of Stevia rebaudiana leaves, on the glycogen levels of fasted rats was investigated. In one set of experiments, single doses of stevioside (200 mumol) or steviol (200 mumol) were given orally to 24-hours fasted rats, either alone or simultaneously with fructose. Under these conditions both stevioside and steviol increased the initial glycogen deposition in the liver.
