Purpose: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the head and neck is a rare and highly malignant tumor, characterized by perineural growth and early distant metastases. The composition of immune cells in the peripheral blood and the tumor microenvironment is critical to tumor growth and control. However, little is known about the frequency and function of the relevant immune cell subsets in this entity.

Introduction: Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) strongly suppresses the immune system, resulting in increased metastasis and recurrent disease. Chemotherapy is part of the multimodal treatment but may further immunosuppression. Recently, we demonstrated that regulatory B cells (Breg), defined as CD19CD39CD73 B cells, play a significant role in the production of immunosuppressive, extracellular adenosine (ADO).

Strophanthus extracts containing cardioactive cardenolides are still applied in European complementary medicine for the treatment of heart diseases. However, the cardenolide profile and the fate of individual compounds during extraction and storage are not well understood. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to characterize the cardenolide compound pattern in extracts of different polarity and their structural changes upon storage in aqueous fermented preparations.

Objectives: Pulmonary adenocarcinomas (ADC) can be sub-grouped based on dominant oncogenic drivers. EGFR mutations define an entity of metastatic ADC with favorable prognosis and high susceptibility to EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibition. In contrast, the clinical impact of additional ERBB family members in ADC is less defined.

Scores are tools to combine complex information into a numerical value. In General Medicine, there are scores to assist in making diagnoses and prognoses, scores to assist therapeutic decision making and to evaluate therapeutic results and scores to help physicians when informing and advising patients. We review six of the scoring systems that have the greatest utility for the General Physician in hospital-based care and in General Practice.

Introduction: An evaluation carried out at King's College Hospital Foundation National Health Service Trust in London identified that women who received continuity of carer from the Albany Midwifery Practice were significantly less likely to use pharmacological pain relief when comparisons were made with eight other midwifery group practices and the local maternity service as a whole. This study was designed to explore women's views of this phenomenon.

Methods: We conducted a thematic analysis of semistructured, audiotaped, in-depth interviews with 10 women who reflected on their experiences of preparation and support for pain in labour and midwifery continuity of carer with Albany midwives, using a qualitative descriptive methodological approach.

Background: Men affected by liver cirrhosis frequently show clinical features of hypogonadism due to hormonal changes, in particular in the metabolism of 17beta-estradiol (E2) and testosterone (T). Sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), the major binding protein of these steroids in serum, is regularly elevated in such patients, with its androgen-binding properties possibly altered. In the present study, surface plasmon resonance biosensor techniques were used to determine whether the functional binding properties of this transporter are maintained in this pathology.

Aim: In intensive rehabilitation departments (Code 56) there is a high case-load of patients with recent total hip replacement (THR). Whereas there has been a progressive standardisation and perfecting of prosthetic materials and surgical techniques, time-frames and modalities of rehabilitation programmes are still very variable. Following the Ministerial Guidelines, issued in 1998 by the Italian National Health System, and the introduction of Accreditation Requirements, methods must become more uniform and there must be increased scientific rigour in treatment so as to reduce variability and the subjective nature of the service provided.
