Guaifenesin: cardiopulmonary effects and plasma concentrations in horses.

We determined the cardiopulmonary changes in horses given guaifenesin alone and in the same horses given xylazine (IV) immediately before administration of guaifenesin. In addition, plasma guaifenesin concentrations were determined in horses and 2 pregnant mares and compared with previously published values in ponies. The dose of guaifenesin necessary to produce lateral recumbency in adult horses was 134 +/- 34 mg/kg (mean +/- SD).

Serum proteins in normal cats and cats infected with Aelurostrongylus abstrusus.

Serum proteins were evaluated by cellulose acetate electrophoresis in cats prior to and every 2 weeks for 24 weeks after oral infection with third stage larvae of Aelurostrongylus abstrusus. Evaluation of electrophoretograms was standardized by determination of electrophoretic migration ratios. Six fractions of serum proteins were consistently identified: albumin and alpha 1, alpha 2, beta 1, beta 2, and gamma globulin.

Polycystic renal disease in related cats.

Six kittens from four litters of related cats had greatly enlarged abdomens and died before they were 7 weeks old. Kittens from two litters were necropsied and found to have bilateral polycystic renal disease and cystic bile ducts.

Association between maternal diabetes and the respiratory-distress syndrome in the newborn.

Perinatal data on 805 infants of diabetic mothers and 10,152 infants of nondiabetic mothers were examined for a relation between maternal diabetes and respiratory-distress syndrome of the newborn. The syndrome occurred in 23.4 per cent of the diabetic vs.

Dichloroacetamide antidotes for thiocarbamate herbicides: mode of action.

Thiocarbamate sulfoxides formed on metabolic sulfoxidation of thicoarbamate herbicides in plants and mammals are effective carbamoylating agents for glutathione and other tissue thiols. Dichloracetamides that protect corn from thiocarbamate herbicide injury more rapid detoxification of the thiocarbamate sulfoxides by increasing their rate of carbamoylation of glutathione through elevation of the root glutathione level and glutathione s-transferase activity.
