Cyanuric acid (CA), a triazine-ring compound commonly used as a stabilizer for free chlorine to enhance disinfection, often persists in wastewater for the production of chlorinated cyanurates (Cl-CAs), posing challenges for treatment. This study demonstrates that conventional advanced oxidation processes (UV/HO and UV/peroxydisulfate) are ineffective in degrading CA, while the UV/sulfite system successfully achieves its breakdown. Hydrated electrons (e) were identified as the primary reactive species responsible for cleaving the stable triazine ring, with minimal contributions from SO and H.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is characterized by high concentrations of Fe(II) and Fe(III), which can be harnessed for the in-situ formation of schwertmannite, enabling the efficient immobilization of toxic heavy metals. However, existing biological and chemical methods for schwertmannite synthesis face significant challenges, including low Fe(II) oxidation rates and particularly limited Fe(III) precipitation efficiency in acidic environments. In this study, we develop a visible light-assisted photo-electrochemical (PEC) system that effectively overcomes these barriers.

The increasing need for sustainable acid mine drainage (AMD) treatment has spurred much attention to strategic development of resource recovery. Along this line, we envisage that a coupled electrochemical system involving anodic Fe(II) oxidation and cathodic alkaline production will facilitate in situ synthesis of schwertmannite from AMD. The photoinduced transformation of ferrihydrite is an important process that can predict the geochemical cycle of Fe in anoxic environments as well as the fate of trace elements bonded to Fe minerals. We report that the photooxidation of sulfite by UV irradiation produces hydrated electrons (super-reductants), which significantly promote ferrihydrite reduction to Fe(II), and SO (a moderate oxidant), enabling its further oxidation to more crystalline Fe(III) products. The experimental results show that the concentration of sulfite was key in influencing the rate and extent of surface-bound Fe(II) formation, which ultimately determined the distribution of individual products.

The corrosion of Fe(0) in the presence of O in nature can lead to the oxidation of organic compounds, but the efficiency is very limited. Herein, attempts were made to establish a galvanic system that separates the anodic Fe(0) oxidation reaction and the cathodic O reduction reaction using an air-breathing cathode. Compared with the chemical Fe(0)/O system, it exhibited a substantially higher capability of destroying a variety of pollutants, such as organic dyes (12 types), phenol, nitrobenzene, acetaminophen, phenol, and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid.
