Article Synopsis
  • Scientists looked at how special cells in the body, called satellite glial cells, affect a painful stomach condition known as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and if a treatment called electroacupuncture (EA) can help.
  • They experimented on rats by using a method to make their stomachs hurt and then saw how different treatments (like EA) affected their pain and body responses.
  • The results showed that EA helped the rats feel less pain and also changed how certain cells work in the stomach, suggesting that this treatment could be useful for people with IBS.

Oxidative stress is crucial in ulcerative colitis (UC) and colitis-associated colorectal cancer (CAC). Intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) are an important component of the intestinal barrier. In previous studies, we have demonstrated that suppressing microRNA-222-3p (miR-222-3p) can protect against oxidative stress in IECs, which ameliorates colonic injuries in UC mice and prevents the conversion of UC to CAC.

Although multiple purinergic receptors mediate the analgesic effects of acupuncture, it remains unclear whether there is mutual interaction between purinergic receptors to jointly mediate the electroacupuncture inhibition of peripheral sensitization in visceral pain. Visceral hypersensitivity was induced by intracolonic 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS) in rat. The antinociception effect of electroacupuncture on visceral pain was evaluated by morphology, behaviors, neuroelectrophysiology and molecular biology techniques.

Objective: To observe the effect of acupuncture on gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) based on the "heart-stomach connection" theory, and to explore its possible mechanisms.

Methods: Seventy patients with GERD were randomly divided into an acupuncture group (35 cases, 2 cases dropped out) and a medication group (35 cases, 1 case dropped out). The patients in the acupuncture group received acupuncture at bilateral Shenmen (HT 7), Neiguan (PC 6), Burong (ST 19), Tianshu (ST 25), Zusanli (ST 36), Gongsun (SP 4), and Zhongwan (CV 12), with needles retained for 30 min, every other day, three times a week.

Article Synopsis
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) includes chronic gut disorders like ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD), with intestinal microbiota potentially impacting their development.
  • Probiotics have gained attention as a possible treatment for IBD, but the clinical evidence supporting their effectiveness varies, with promising results for Nissle 1917 and VSL#3 specifically for UC.
  • Further research through robust randomized clinical trials is needed to fully understand the safety and effectiveness of different probiotic strains for both UC and CD, due to their differing immune responses and lesion characteristics.

Background: Gastrointestinal dysfunction is one of the common complaints for patient post-surgery. Acupuncture has been employed to improve gastrointestinal function and sleeping quality and has confirmed clinical efficacy for emotional problems. This study aims to evaluate the clinical effect of electroacupuncture for postoperative rapid recovery.

Long noncoding RNA (lncRNAs) are involved in the pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis (UC). Moxibustion, a traditional Chinese medicine, can improve symptoms in patients with UC and reduce intestinal inflammation in rats with UC. However, it remains unclear whether the ameliorative effect of moxibustion on intestinal mucosal inflammation in UC is related to lncRNAs.

Cognitive impairment poses a significant burden on individuals, families, and society worldwide. Despite the lack of effective treatment strategies, emerging evidence suggests that the microbiome-gut-brain (MGB) axis may play a critical role in the pathogenesis of cognitive impairment. While targeted treatment is not yet comprehensive, recently, acupuncture and moxibustion therapy has participated increasingly in the treatment of degenerative diseases and has achieved a certain therapeutic effect.

Background: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional bowel disease characterized by abdominal pain or discomfort associated with altered bowel habits. Several clinical studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of acupuncture and moxibustion for IBS. Many systematic reviews of acupuncture and moxibustion for IBS have been published in recent years, but their results are not entirely consistent.

Article Synopsis
  • - Crohn's disease (CD) is increasingly common globally and is linked to immune system issues and immune cell infiltration; this study focused on exploring the molecular immune mechanisms related to CD and its fibrosis using bioinformatics.
  • - Researchers analyzed three datasets from the Gene Expression Omnibus to identify differential gene expressions (DEGs) and their relationships with immune cell types, using various methods like ssGSEA and LASSO regression to pinpoint key genes.
  • - Ultimately, the study identified nine significant DEGs, narrowed down to four hub genes (COL1A1, CXCL10, MMP2, and FGF2), with COL1A1 showing the greatest potential as a diagnostic biomarker for CD based on its sensitivity

Background: Aromatase inhibitors (AIs) are recommended as the preferred therapy for postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive (HR+) breast cancer. As a result, aromatase inhibitor-associated musculoskeletal symptom (AIMSS) have become a major problem leading to therapy discontinuation and decreased quality of life in patients receiving adjuvant AIs treatment. Multiple therapies have been attempted, but have yielded limited clinical results.

Crohn's disease (CD) is a common chronic non-specific gastrointestinal inflammatory disease. Studies showed that acupuncture-moxibustion (A&M) can effectively relieve the symptoms of CD and its clinical efficacy has been confirmed in patients. In this paper, by reviewing the relevant articles for the mechanism studies on CD treated with A&M in recent years, it is discovered that the effect mechanism of A&M on CD includes two aspects, i.

Oxidative stress is an important pathogenic factor in ulcerative colitis (UC) and colitis-associated colorectal cancer (CAC), further impairing the entire colon. Intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) are crucial components of innate immunity and play an important role in maintaining intestinal barrier function. Recent studies have indicated that microRNA-222-3p (miR-222-3p) is increased in colon of UC and colorectal cancer (CRC) patients, and miR-222-3p is a crucial regulator of oxidative stress.

Objective: This study was conducted to explore the mechanism of intestinal inflammation and barrier repair in Crohn's disease (CD) regulated by moxibustion through bile acid (BA) enterohepatic circulation and intestinal farnesoid X receptor (FXR).

Methods: Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into control group, CD model group, mild moxibustion group and herb-partitioned moxibustion group. CD model rats induced by 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid were treated with mild moxibustion or herb-partitioned moxibustion at Tianshu (ST25) and Qihai (CV6).

Constipation is one of the most common nonmotor symptoms in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and often occurs before motor symptoms. Electroacupuncture effectively improves the symptoms of constipation in patients with PD. In the present study, we used thymus cell antigen 1--synuclein (Thy1-Syn) transgenic mice as a model of intestinal motility disorders in PD to determine the therapeutic effect of electroacupuncture and the underlying mechanisms.
