Steroid hormones, including estrone (E1), androstadienedione (ADD), and androstenedione (AED), are prevalent in aquatic ecosystems and pose ecological risks due to their disruptive influence on fish populations. However, little consideration has been given to the endocrine disrupting effects of fish exposed to complex mixtures of hormones in the real world. In this study, adult female western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) were exposed to two concentrations of E1 (100 ng/L for E1L and 5,000 ng/L for E1H), ADD (100 ng/L for ADDL and 10,000 ng/L for ADDH), and AED (100 ng/L for AEDL and 10,000 ng/L for AEDH) as well as four binary mixture treatments (ADDL+E1L, ADDH+E1H, AEDL+E1L, and AEDH+E1H).

Olivine-type LiMnFePO (LMFP) has inherited the excellent heat-stable structure of LiFePO (LFP) and the high-voltage property of LiMnPO (LMP), which shows great promise as a high-safety, high-energy-density cathode material. In order to combine the high energy density and excellent electrochemical performance, it is essential to consider the Mn/Fe ratio. This paper presents a theoretical investigation of the lattice structure parameters, embedded lithium voltage, local electron density, migration barrier, and lithium ion delithiation and lithiation mechanism of different LiMnFePO4 (0.

Background: The association between problematic mobile phone use (PMPU) and negative emotions in university students is not well understood in terms of causality and directionality. This study aims to clarify whether negative emotions trigger PMPU or whether the PMPU itself leads to increased negative emotions over time.

Methods: A two-wave longitudinal study was conducted involving 5568 Chinese freshmen who were surveyed at baseline and followed up after one academic year.

Indium phosphide (InP) single crystals, as key III-V compound semiconductor materials, play an irreplaceable role in various fields, such as optical communication and microwave millimeter-wave communication. Vertical gradient freeze (VGF) has become one of the main methods for industrial production of InP single crystals due to its advantages in temperature gradient control. However, defects such as twins and dislocations are easily generated during the production of InP single crystals by the VGF method.

Article Synopsis
  • Biochar made from pomelo peel can help manage arsenic levels in anoxic soils, but the specific parts of biochar that affect arsenic transformation are not well understood.
  • In this study, bulk biochar showed a much higher ability to adsorb As(III) compared to As(V), mainly due to its colloidal fraction, which acted as an electron shuttle to promote arsenic reduction in soil.
  • The results indicate that understanding the colloidal components of biochar is crucial for effectively using it in areas contaminated with arsenic, enhancing its application in environmental remediation.

The removal of crude oil from spent hydrodesulfurization catalysts constitutes the preliminary stage in the recovery process of valuable metals. However, the traditional roasting method for the removal exhibits massive limitations. In view of this, the present study used an ultrasound-assisted surfactant cleaning method to remove crude oil from spent hydrodesulfurization catalysts, which demonstrated effectiveness.

Soil aggregates play pivotal roles in soil organic carbon (SOC) preservation and climate change. Biochar has been widely applied in agricultural ecosystems to improve soil physicochemical properties. However, the underlying mechanisms of SOC sequestration by soil aggregation with biochar addition are not well understood at a large scale.

Monitoring extracellular calcium ion (Ca) chemical signals in neurons is crucial for tracking physiological and pathological changes associated with brain diseases in live animals. Potentiometry based solid-state ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) with the assist of functional carbon nanomaterials as ideal solid-contact layer could realize the potential response for in vitro and in vivo analysis. Herein, we employ a kind of biomass derived porous carbon as a transducing layer to prompt efficient ion to electron transduction while stabilizes the potential drift.

Estrogens and androgens are typical steroid hormones and often occur together in contaminated aquatic environments, but their mixed effects in aquatic organisms have been less well reported. In this study, the endocrine disrupting effects of binary mixtures of 17β-estradiol (E2) and testosterone (T) in western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) were assessed by analyzing the sex ratio, secondary sex characteristics, gonadal histology, and transcriptional expression of target genes related to the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis in G. affinis (from embryos) continuously exposed to E2 (50 ng/L), T (T1: 50 ng/L; T2: 200 ng/L), and mixtures of both (E2 + T1: 50 + 50 ng/L; E2 + T2: 50 + 200 ng/L) for 119 d.

The interactions between estrogen and androgen in aquatic animals remain largely unknown. In this study, two generations (F0 and F1) of western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) were continuously exposed to 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2, 10 ng/L), methyltestosterone (MT, 10 ng/L (MTL); 50 ng/L (MTH)), and mixtures (EE2+MTL and EE2+MTH). Various endpoints, including sex ratio (phenotypic and genetic), secondary sex characteristics, gonadal histology, and transcriptional profile of genes, were examined.

Microbial nitrate reduction can drive Fe(II) oxidation in anoxic environments, affecting the nitrous oxide emission and ammonium availability. The nitrate-reducing Fe(II) oxidation usually causes severe cell encrustation via chemodenitrification and potentially inhibits bacterial activity due to the blocking effect of secondary minerals. However, it remains unclear how Fe(II) oxidation and subsequent cell encrustation affect the functional genes and bacteria for denitrification and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA).

Nitrate (NO)-reducing Fe(II) oxidation (NRFO) is prevalent in anoxic environments. However, it is uncertain in which step(s) the biological Fe(II) oxidation is coupled with denitrification during NRFO. In this study, a heterotrophic NRFO bacterium, Diaphorobacter caeni LI3, was isolated from paddy soil and used to investigate the transformation of Fe(II) and nitrogen as well as nitrogen isotopic fractionation (δN-NO) during NRFO.

Lead (Pb) can enter soil environment during flooding events such as surface runoff and intensive rainfall. However, the key transformation processes of exogenous Pb during anoxic-oxic alteration remain poorly understood particularly how phosphorus and organic matter contribute to Pb immobilization/release. Here, a kinetic model was established to investigate the Pb transformation in an acidic soil with two levels of Pb contamination under alternating anoxic-oxic conditions, based on the results of seven-step sequential extraction, dissolved organic carbon, sulfate, iron, phosphorus, and surface sites.

Currently, less than 20% of titanium secondary resources can be recycled, and there are few reviews on titanium secondary resources recovery, which cannot fully reveal the technical information and progress of titanium secondary resources recovery. This work presents the current global distribution of titanium resources and market supply and demand, then focuses on an overview of technical studies on titanium extraction from different titanium-bearing secondary slags.

Spinel-type manganese oxide is considered as a typical cobalt-free high-voltage cathode material for lithium-ion battery applications because of its low cost, non-toxicity, and easy preparation. Nevertheless, severe capacity fading during charge and discharge limits its commercialization. Therefore, understanding the electrochemical properties and its modification mechanism of spinel-type manganese oxide for a lithium-ion battery is of great research interest.
