Mode converters (MCs) play an essential role in mode-division multiplexing (MDM) systems. Numerous schemes have been developed on the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform, yet most of them focus solely on the conversion of fundamental mode to one or two specific higher-order modes. In this study, we introduce a hybrid shape optimization (HSO) method that combines particle swarm optimization (PSO) with adjoint methods to optimize the shape of the S-bend waveguide, facilitating the design of arbitrary-order MCs featuring compactness and high performance.

Article Synopsis
  • The digital subcarrier multiplexing (DSCM) technique is beneficial for coherent systems but faces challenges due to sensitivity to transceiver IQ skew, which causes interference.
  • A new low-complexity calibration method is introduced that requires less power and eliminates the need for complex MIMO operations between symmetric subcarriers.
  • Additionally, a simplified equalizer (SEQPT) is proposed to efficiently handle polarization de-multiplexing, channel equalization, and phase noise compensation, and experimental results show it performs nearly as well as more complex methods with minimal computational demand.

Background: Conventional management (CM), substantial fertilization and flooding irrigation, has led to soil acidification, the decrease in soil bacterial diversity in bamboo forests. Integration of water and fertilizer management (IWF) can effectively improve the efficiency of water and fertilizer use, but its effect on soil environment, especially on microbial community, is still unclear.

Methods: Here, we used next-generation high-throughput sequencing to compare soil properties and bacterial communities through different fertilization and irrigation methods under IWF and CM.

  • The study explores the increasing incidence of Medullary Thyroid Microcarcinoma (micro-MTC) and evaluates lymph node metastasis (LNM) and its impact on prognosis, aiming to create a nomogram for predicting lateral lymph node metastasis (LLNM).
  • Researchers analyzed data from patients with micro-MTC using the SEER database and their medical center across specific years to build and test the reliability of this predictive tool.
  • Findings revealed a higher-than-expected rate of LLNM in the studied groups, and the nomogram proved to be an effective method for helping clinicians tailor treatment options based on individual patient risk.

Background: Invertases (INVs) are key enzymes in sugar metabolism, cleaving sucrose into glucose and fructose and playing an important role in plant development and the stress response, however, the INV gene family in passion fruit has not been systematically reported.

Results: In this study, a total of 16 PeINV genes were identified from the passion fruit genome and named according to their subcellular location and chromosome position. These include six cell wall invertase (CWINV) genes, two vacuolar invertase (VINV) genes, and eight neutral/alkaline invertase (N/AINV) genes.

Accurate detection of tumor biomarkers in blood is crucial for diagnosing and treating tumor disease. In this study, a metal enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (MeLISA) was fabricated for the ultrasensitive and naked-eye detection of tumor biomarker alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) in clinical serum samples. Herein, novel copper metal-organic frameworks and gold platinum nanoparticle composites (Cu-MOFs@AuPtNPs) were synthesized for the first time by an method, which showed an enormous specific surface area and excellent peroxidase (POx) mimicking properties.

A modified QuEChERS method was developed to determine multi-class pesticide and veterinary residues in aquatic products. Chitosan microspheres were conveniently synthesized and utilized as the cleanup adsorbent in the QuEChERS procedure, showcasing rapid filtration one-step pretreatment ability for the determination of drug multi-residues in aquatic products. Compared to conventional synthetic sorbents, chitosan microspheres not only have good purification performance, but also have renewable and degradable properties.

Introduction: Coronavirus disease 2019 occurred unexpectedly in late December 2019, it was difficult to immediately develop an effective vaccine or propose targeted medical interventions in the early stages of the outbreak. At this point, non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) are essential components of the public health response to COVID-19. How to combine different NPIs in the early stages of an outbreak to control the spread of epidemics and ensure that the policy combination does not incur high socio-economic costs became the focus of this study.

  • The study aimed to investigate the connection between multiple chronic conditions (MCC), mental health, and cognitive function in older adults, proposing that depressive symptoms mediate the relationship between chronic diseases and cognitive impairment.
  • Conducted in Guangxi, China, the research evaluated over 11,500 participants aged 65 and older, finding that 26.53% had MCC, with hypertension and diabetes being the most prevalent combination of chronic diseases.
  • The results indicated that high rates of depression (12.9%) and cognitive impairment (27.4%) exist among older adults, with factors like female gender, older age, urban residency, and lower education levels being associated with these issues; importantly, the study concluded that addressing depression could help

Microstructural engineering is regarded as a promising option for fabricating high-performance carbon anodes. Hence, a facile solvothermal-assisted low-temperature calcination strategy was employed to modulate the microstructure of semicoke-derived carbon anodes. Owing to the effective pseudo-graphite phase modulation, the modified carbon anode exhibited a significant increase in capacity, cycling stability and ion kinetics in both lithium-ion batteries and sodium-ion batteries.

Red blood cells are destroyed when the shear stress in the blood pump exceeds a threshold, which in turn triggers hemolysis in the patient. The impeller design of centrifugal blood pumps significantly influences the hydraulic characteristics and hemolytic properties of these devices. Based on this premise, the present study employs a multiphase flow approach to numerically simulate centrifugal blood pumps, investigating the performance of pumps with varying numbers of blades and blade deflection angles.

Plant senescence is an integrated programme of plant development that aims to remobilize nutrients and energy from senescing tissues to developing organs under developmental and stress-induced conditions. Upstream in the regulatory network, a small family of single-stranded DNA/RNA-binding proteins known as WHIRLYs occupy a central node, acting at multiple regulatory levels and via trans-localization between the nucleus and organelles. In this review, we summarize the current progress on the role of WHIRLY members in plant development and stress-induced senescence.
