Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed the validity of the Chinese version of the Patient Activation Measure (PAM-13-C) specifically for individuals with chronic spinal cord injury, involving 284 participants from a rehabilitation center and social media.
  • Results indicated that the PAM-13-C had strong internal consistency and reliable test-retest performance, confirming its effectiveness in measuring patient activation.
  • The findings suggest that PAM-13-C is a valid tool for evaluating the engagement of patients with spinal cord injuries in China, with minor floor and ceiling effects reported.

Ocean energy harvesting based on a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) has great application potential, while the encapsulation of triboelectric devices in water poses a critical issue. Herein, a triboelectric-electromagnetic hybrid nanogenerator (TE-HNG) consisting of TENGs and electromagnetic generators (EMGs) is proposed to harvest water flow energy. A magnetic coupling transmission component is applied to replace traditional bearing structures, which can realize the fully enclosed packaging of the TENG devices and achieve long-lasting energy harvesting from water flow.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to investigate the relationship between physical disabilities and the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) in disabled individuals, addressing conflicting results from previous research on cardiovascular health.
  • - Conducted as a retrospective cohort study in Shanghai, the research followed 6,419 disabled adults over 7.5 years, categorizing them into those with physical disabilities and those without, and utilized various statistical analyses to assess the risk of CHD.
  • - Results indicated that individuals with physical disabilities had a higher incidence of CHD compared to their non-physically disabled counterparts, with specific findings showing increased risk among women and those with moderate disabilities after controlling for other health factors.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent quarantine measures have led to a significant impact on mental health worldwide. Medical staff, in particular, have been exposed to high levels of stress due to their frontline work during the crisis. However, there is still limited research on the psychological mechanism among medical staff after quarantine.

Background: Much less is known about the importance of blood pressure (BP) trajectories concerning the incidence of coronary heart disease (CHD) in people with disabilities. Our aim was to evaluate this association.

Methods: This cohort study surveyed 5711 adults from the Shanghai Disability Health Survey from June 2012 to June 2019.

Background: Constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) targeting the lower limb function uses various methods. The influence of CIMT methods on lower limb outcomes after stroke has rarely been examined.

Objectives: This study aimed to examine CIMT effects on lower limb outcomes and explore the influence of CIMT methods on treatment effects after stroke, with other potential factors considered as covariates.

Molecular dynamics simulations are performed to study the mechanical properties and deformation mechanisms of a heterogeneous face-centered cubic/ body-centered cubic Cu/Ta nanolayered composite under uniaxial tension and compression. The results show that the stress-strain curves exhibit two main yield points in tension while only one yield point during compression, and the deformation primarily experiences three stages. The first stage is linearly elastic at small strains, followed by the nucleation and propagation of dislocations and stacking faults in the Cu layers, and eventually the Ta layers yield to plastic deformation.

Background: Trimalleolar fracture is a common ankle fracture with serious complications and costly healthcare problem. Most studies used clinical assessments to evaluate the functional status of the patients. Although clinical assessments are valid, they are static and subjective.

The sliding freestanding layer triboelectric nanogenerator (SF-TENG) is a sustainable power source that can convert mechanical energy from linear or rotating mechanical motion to electrical energy. This paper proposes a double-layer staggered chain teeth TENG. Comparing the staggered electrode TENG and the double-layer staggered electrode TENG, the output voltage difference is relatively small.

We propose a new, to the best of our knowledge, technique to capture single particles in real-time in a microfluidic system with controlled flow using micro-pillar traps fabricated by one-step. The micro pillars are fabricated in parallel by femtosecond multi-foci laser beams, which are generated by multiplexing gratings. As the generation process does not need integration loops, the pattern and the intensity distribution of the foci array can be controlled in real-time by changing the parameters of gratings.

. Ambulatory tasks are the important components of balance training which effectively improve postural stability and functional activities in persons with Parkinson's disease (PD). The difficulty level of an ambulatory task is usually set in the form of attention, direction, speed, or amplitude requirement.

Femtosecond-laser-induced two-photon polymerization has distinct advantages in micro-nanofabrication due to its intrinsic three-dimensional processing capability and high precision with sub-100 nanometer fabrication resolution. However, the high resolution causes a drawback in fabricating large-scale structures due to unacceptably long processing times. To solve this problem, we applied the patterned focus as the basic element for scanning processing.

Background: Development of an entry-level physiotherapy curriculum in China currently follows the World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT) guidelines, however there is no standard, validated, assessment tool for physiotherapy practice in use in China. This article reports the process of translation of the "Assessment of Physiotherapy Practice" (APP), a validated assessment instrument adopted by all universities in Australia and New Zealand, into Chinese (APP-Chinese) and its implementation by Chinese physiotherapy clinical educators (CEs) and students during clinical placements.

Methods: The process of forward and backward translation of the APP was undertaken by a team of academics from universities in Shanghai, Hong Kong, United States and Australia.

Atomistic molecular dynamics simulations are performed to study the thermal stability of bulk superlattices consisting of alkylthiol-coated gold nanocrystals. Using nanocrystals passivated by dodecanethiol chains, we show that the gold superlattice possesses a remarkable high-temperature stability, in agreement with experiment. When heated from room temperature, the superlattice expands slightly at lower temperature (<500 K) and then exhibits a considerable lattice contraction above 500 K, while maintaining the intact crystal structure up to 710 K.

Atomistic molecular dynamics simulations are performed to study the potential of mean force (PMF) between two asymmetric gold nanocrystals (NCs) capped by alkylthiols in a vacuum. We systematically investigate the dependence of the PMF on the sizes and capping ligand lengths of two NCs. The results show that the potential well depth scales linearly with increasing total length of two capping ligands on asymmetric dimers, but it hardly depends on the NC size.

Soft actuators with large deformation and high output force in response to multi-stimuli are highly demanded for the development of biomimetic applications. Here, a bilayer actuator composed of spongy graphene with internal gasbag microstructures and the commercial polyimide adhesive tape is fabricated by a simple and fast method. This actuator produces large deformation, high output force, and dual-stimuli response, owing to the deformation of graphene micro-gasbags coupled with the thermal expansion of polyimide, and the electrothermal and photothermal properties of graphene.
