Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of pigment epithelium derived factor (PEDF) and PEDF-derived peptides Mer44 and Mer34 on the severity of herpetic simplex keratitis (HSK) in mice.

Methods: Adult C57BL/6 mice were infected ocularly with the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1, McKrae strain) and injected subconjunctivally with PEDF, Mer44, or Mer34. Corneal nerve degeneration, neovascularization, sensitivity, neutrophils, macrophages and CD4+ T-cell infiltration, virus contents, and expressions of VEGF, PEDF, and proinflammatory factors were evaluated during acute period.

Herein, nitrogen, sulfur co-doped fluorescent carbon dots (N,SCDs) were synthesized by simple and facile microwave-assisted pyrolysis using ammonium citrate and cysteamine hydrochloride as precursors. The obtained N,SCDs exhibited outstanding photostability, excitation-wavelength independence, excellent fluorescence properties with fluorescence quantum yield (FLQY) up to 54.8%.

In this work, a simple and selective fluorescence sensor approach called 'turn-on-off' for the determination of thiamine (TM) has been developed. As known, the o-phenanthroline (o-phen) has inner fluorescence, though when reacted with zinc ions to form the o-phen-Zn complex the fluorescence intensity was enhanced effectively, while upon addition of TM into the o-phen-Zn complex solution, the intensity of the system was gently quenched, which was termed the 'turn-on-off' probe. Echinoderms exhibit several fascinating evolutionary innovations that are rarely seen in the animal kingdom, but how these animals attained such features is not well understood. Here we report the sequencing and analysis of the genome and extensive transcriptomes of the sea cucumber , a species from a special echinoderm group with extraordinary potential for saponin synthesis, aestivation and organ regeneration. The sea cucumber does not possess a reorganized cluster as previously assumed for all echinoderms, and the spatial expression of and potentially guides the embryo-to-larva axial transformation.

But their function in marine bivalves - a group of animals of commercial importance - is largely unexplored due to the lack of systematic identification of these molecules. Tailor-made chitosan fiber was prepared via hydrothermal treatment to serve as a micro-solid phase extraction (micro-SPE) sorbent for the analysis of petroleum acids (PAs) in crude oils. Chitosan fiber, which is commercial and cheap, has a diameter of about 10 μm and a length of a few centimeters. The fibrous property of the sorbent enables the micro-SPE to deal with viscous crude oil samples because of the low back-pressure during extraction, while the abundant hydroxyl groups and amino groups on the surface of chitosan fiber can provide high density of specific sites for adsorption of PAs.

In this work, the carbon dots (CDs) were synthesized by an one-pot portable hydrothermal method from sodium citrate and NHHCO. The obtained CDs were found to show high fluorescence quantum yield (31%), excitation-wavelength independence, outstanding water-soluble, excellent chemical and optical stability. Interestingly, it was discovered that sunset yellow (SY) was sensitive and effective in quenching the fluorescence of CDs.

Protein 14-3-3γ was significantly reduced in human uterine leiomyoma compared to the adjacent normal myometrium tissue. To investigate the possible link between the reduced 14-3-3γ expression and uterine leiomyoma growth, we have overexpressed 14-3-3γ protein in uterine leiomyomal cells and its effects on cell proliferation and apoptosis were analyzed. Atomistic simulations were used to study conductance across the interface between a nanoscale gold probe and a graphite surface with a step edge. Conductance on the graphite terrace was observed to increase with load and be approximately proportional to contact area calculated from the positions of atoms in the interface. The relationship between area and conductance was further explored by varying the position of the contact relative to the location of the graphite step edge.

We report an 80-year-old male patient with severe rheumatoid arthritis who was treated with tripterygium glycoside, an immunosuppressive agent made from the extract of a Chinese medicinal herb called Tripterygium wilfordii Hook F. The patient had no apparent skin lesions before the treatment, but he developed aggressive hyperkeratotic lesions with rapid progression after using tripterygium glycoside. He was repeatedly diagnosed with eczema, but treatment failed to achieve efficacy.
