Single-atom catalysts (SACs) with maximized metal atom utilization and intriguing properties are of utmost importance for energy conversion and catalysis science. However, the lack of a straightforward and scalable synthesis strategy of SACs on diverse support materials remains the bottleneck for their large-scale industrial applications. Herein, we report a general approach to directly transform bulk metals into single atoms through the precise control of the electrodissolution-electrodeposition kinetics in ionic liquids and demonstrate the successful applicability of up to twenty different monometallic SACs and one multimetallic SAC with five distinct elements.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease whose early onset correlates with dysregulated citrullination, a process catalyzed by peptidylarginine deiminase isoform 4 (PADI-4). Here, we report that PADI-4 is a novel target of vitamin B12, a water-soluble vitamin that serves as a cofactor in DNA synthesis and the metabolism of fatty and amino acids. Vitamin B12 preferentially inhibited PADI-4 over PADI-2 with comparable inhibitory activity to the reference compound Cl-amidine in enzymatic inhibition assays, and reduced total cellular citrullination levels including that of histone H3 citrullination mediated by PADI-4.

This work develops a three-dimensional (3D) weak formulation, based on the consistent couple stress theory (CCST), for analyzing the size-dependent dynamic instability behavior of simply-supported, functionally graded (FG) cylindrical microshells that are subjected to combinations of periodic axial compression and external pressure. In our formulation, the microshells are artificially divided into layers. The displacement components of each individual layer are selected as the primary variables, which are expanded as a double Fourier series in the in-plane domain and are interpolated with Hermitian polynomials in the thickness direction.

Background: Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is a frequent complication that may increase morbidity and mortality risk following cardiac surgery. The systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) is an emerging biomarker that provides an integrated measure of inflammation by incorporating neutrophil, lymphocyte, and platelet counts. Recent studies have reported associations between elevated SII and increased POAF risk; however, significant heterogeneity exists regarding its predictive efficacy.

In recent years, hafnium oxide (HfO) has gained increasing interest because of its high dielectric constant, excellent thermal stability, and high band gap. Although HfO bulk and film materials have been prepared and well-studied, HfO fibers, especially hollow fibers, have been less investigated. In this study, we present a facile preparation method for HfO hollow fibers through a unique integration of the sol-gel process and electrospinning technique.

Anthropogenic shifts in seas are reshaping fishing trends, with significant implications for aquatic food sources throughout this century. Examining a 21-year abundance dataset of Argentine shortfin squids Illex argentinus paired with a regional oceanic analysis, we noted strong correlations between squid annual abundance and sea surface temperature (SST) in January and February and eddy kinetic energy (EKE) from March to May in the Southwest Atlantic. A deeper analysis revealed combined ocean-atmosphere interactions, pinpointed as the primary mode in a rotated empirical orthogonal function analysis of SST.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study investigates the relationship between mental health diagnoses (like major depressive episodes, dysthymic disorder, and manic episodes) and their associated symptoms using simulated data rather than real-world cases.
  • - Researchers generated random populations with varying symptom prevalence and correlations to analyze the significance of these associations, using data from the DSM-IV-TR for reference.
  • - Findings revealed that the diagnoses did not consistently correlate with their own symptoms across all simulations, notably under certain conditions, while some symptoms showed significant correlations, especially when there was overlap between major depressive episodes and dysthymic disorder.

Neuropathic pain, which is initiated by a malfunction of the somatosensory cortex system, elicits inflammation and simultaneously activates glial cells that initiate neuroinflammation. Electroacupuncture (EA) has been shown to have therapeutic effects for neuropathic pain, although with uncertain mechanisms. We suggest that EA can reliably cure neuropathic disease through anti-inflammation and transient receptor potential V1 (TRPV1) signaling pathways from the peripheral to the central nervous system.
