To enhance the characterization of wood extractives at molecular level, a detailed ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry (UHRMS)-based analytical methodology was developed in this work. The analytical strategies, including selection of compatible solvent for extraction, evaluation of ionization solvent for effective electrospray ionization, and multi-dimensional data analysis, were established to ensure a comprehensive characterization of complex compositions in wood extractives. Extraction capability of seven solvents with varied polarities was examined by a standard reference material of hardwood biomass and evaluated based on thousands of compounds which were much more than those discovered before.

Thiophene compounds are the main concern of petroleum desulfurization, and their chemical composition and molecular configuration have critical impacts on thermodynamic and kinetic processes. In this work, atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) was employed for effective ionization of thiophene compounds in petroleum with complex matrix, in which carbon disulfide was used for generating predominant [M] ions without the need of derivatization as for electrospray ionization. APCI coupled with ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry (UHRMS) was successfully applied to the composition characterization of thiophene compounds in both a low boiling petroleum fraction and a whole crude oil.

Many studies have demonstrated that combining nerve conduits with neural stem cells or growth factors can repair peripheral nerve injury in rodents. However, nerve damage does occur with longer gaps in human than in rodents, thus findings from rodent studies are difficult to translate to clinical practice. Regeneration of injured peripheral nerves is a slow, complicated process that could be improved by implantation of neural stem cells (NSCs) or nerve conduit. Implantation of NSCs along with conduits promotes the regeneration of damaged nerve, likely because (i) conduit supports and guides axonal growth from one nerve stump to the other, while preventing fibrous tissue ingrowth and retaining neurotrophic factors; and (ii) implanted NSCs differentiate into Schwann cells and maintain a growth factor enriched microenvironment, which promotes nerve regeneration. In this study, we identified IL12p80 (homodimer of IL12p40) in the cell extracts of implanted nerve conduit combined with NSCs by using protein antibody array and Western blotting.

Rationale: Monohydric alcohols are common in natural products, bio-oils, and medicine. We have found that monohydric alcohols can form O3 (ions containing three oxygen atoms) and O4 adduct ions in negative electrospray ionization (ESI) Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS), which would significantly affect the composition analysis of alcohols, especially in a complex mixture. It is necessary to study the reaction pathways and the method to eliminate or reduce the 'artifact' adducts.

We present atmospheric pressure laser-induced acoustic desorption chemical ionization (AP/LIAD-CI) with O(2) carrier/reagent gas as a powerful new approach for the analysis of saturated hydrocarbon mixtures. This study investigated the feasibility of using a split-focused ultrasound transducer to perform thermal surgery on breast tumors, based on a multidirectional heating scheme. The transducer is a square section of a sphere with a radius of 10 cm.
