Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) provide a window into the nano-optical, electrodynamic response of their host material and its dielectric environment. Graphene/α-RuCl serves as an ideal model system for imaging SPPs since the large work function difference between these two layers facilitates charge transfer that hole dopes graphene with ∼ 10 cm free carriers. In this work, we study the emergent THz response of graphene/α-RuCl heterostructures using our home-built cryogenic scanning near-field optical microscope.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on improving outcomes for sepsis patients by using the National Early Warning Score 2 (NEWS2) to measure treatment effectiveness in the emergency department (ED).
  • It evaluated how changes in NEWS2 scores during ED stay relate to overall hospital mortality rates among sepsis patients admitted between 1997 and 2020.
  • The findings suggest that a decrease in NEWS2 scores correlates with lower mortality risk, highlighting the importance of prompt and effective treatment in reducing sepsis-related deaths.

A universal health insurance program such as the National Health Insurance in Taiwan offers a wide coverage and increased access to healthcare services. Despite its ongoing efforts to enhance healthcare accessibility, differences in health for people living in urban and resource-deprived areas remain substantial. To investigate the longitudinal impact of the healthcare system and other potential structural drivers such as education and economic development on geographical disparities in health, we designed a panel study with longitudinal open secondary data, covering all 368 townships in Taiwan between 2013 and 2017.

Moiré superlattices in twisted two-dimensional materials have generated tremendous excitement as a platform for achieving quantum properties on demand. However, the moiré pattern is highly sensitive to the interlayer atomic registry, and current assembly techniques suffer from imprecise control of the average twist angle, spatial inhomogeneity in the local twist angle, and distortions caused by random strain. We manipulated the moiré patterns in hetero- and homobilayers through in-plane bending of monolayer ribbons, using the tip of an atomic force microscope.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the outcomes of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) compared to those without ESKD, focusing on rates of return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) during CPR.* -
  • Results showed that ESKD patients had significantly higher rates of "any" and "sustained" ROSC and exhibited lower potassium levels and milder acidosis than non-ESKD patients during resuscitation.* -
  • Findings suggest ESKD patients can achieve comparable hospital survival rates to non-ESKD patients, challenging existing beliefs that these patients are always at high risk for complications like hyperkalemia and acidosis.*

Twisted van der Waals multilayers are widely regarded as a rich platform to access novel electronic phases thanks to the multiple degrees of freedom available for controlling their electronic and chemical properties. Here, we propose that the stacking domains that form naturally due to the relative twist between successive layers act as an additional "knob" for controlling the behavior of these systems and report the emergence and engineering of stacking domain-dependent surface chemistry in twisted few-layer graphene. Using mid-infrared near-field optical microscopy and atomic force microscopy, we observe a selective adhesion of metallic nanoparticles and liquid water at the domains with rhombohedral stacking configurations of minimally twisted double bi- and trilayer graphene.

The electronic and structural properties of atomically thin materials can be controllably tuned by assembling them with an interlayer twist. During this process, constituent layers spontaneously rearrange themselves in search of a lowest energy configuration. Such relaxation phenomena can lead to unexpected and novel material properties.

Article Synopsis
  • Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) on long-term hemodialysis (HD) face a higher risk of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) but may have better chances of recovering spontaneous circulation (ROSC) compared to non-ESRD patients.
  • A study using data from Taiwan analyzed over 100,000 ESRD and matched non-ESRD patients, revealing that ESRD patients had a 2.11 times higher risk of OHCA but were 2.47 times more likely to achieve ROSC.
  • Additionally, survival rates after ROSC were found to be better for ESRD patients, suggesting that their prolonged exposure to toxins and regular HD may improve their vascular response and outcomes post-arrest

First-trimester septated cystic hygroma occurs in approximately 1 in 268 pregnancies and has long been associated with a markedly increased risk of fetal aneuploidy and, among euploid fetuses, an increased risk of structural anomalies primarily affecting the cardiac and skeletal systems. Invasive prenatal diagnosis - chorionic villus sampling and/or amniocentesis - encompasses the time-honored clinical tools for the next step in management following prenatal sonographic diagnosis of first-trimester septated cystic hygroma. Currently, prenatal cell-free DNA (cfDNA) screening for fetal aneuploidy with select microdeletions is gradually replacing the considerably less sensitive, and labor-intensive combined first-trimester screening.
