This study aims to classify regions with different air pollution characteristics into groups in Taiwan, and further to evaluate and compare the air quality of various groups. A selected multivariate analysis technique, cluster analysis, is applied to the pollution monitoring dataset which including PM10, SO2, NO2, CO and O3. The obtained results have proved that the regions with similar air pollution characteristic can be appropriately grouped by applying cluster analysis.

Diabetes is known to be a high-risk factor for coronary artery disease (CAD), and lipid abnormalities have been found to possibly contribute to CAD in diabetic patients. Cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) gene TaqIB polymorphism is associated with lipid profile variability, and this polymorphism may be a risk factor for CAD in diabetic patients. The transcatheter closure of atrial septal defects provides an alternative to surgery, and various devices, such as the Sideris buttoned device, have been prescribed. Late complications have been rare and have not yet been reported within 2 years of implantation. The cost-effectiveness component of the 18-month CATIE trial of schizophrenia pharmacotherapy (n = 1460) showed that the first-generation antipsychotic perphenazine was US$300-600 per month less expensive than each of four second-generation antipsychotics, and no less effective across multiple measures. We consider whether or not each of eight potential methodological limitations could weaken this conclusion: follow-up rates, study duration, sample characteristics, the choice of outcome measures, exclusion of patients with tardive dyskinesia from assignment to perphenazine, choice of study drugs and doses, reliance on intention-to-treat analysis, and differences in prestudy treatment. We conclude that results of CATIE are robust to these limitations.

A superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) nanoparticle is emerging as an ideal probe for noninvasive cell tracking. However, its low intracellular labeling efficiency has limited the potential usage and has evoked great interest in developing new labeling strategies. Recent research on foveal structure and reading suggests that the two halves of a centrally fixated word seem to be initially projected to, and processed in, different hemispheres. In the current study, we utilize two contrasting structures in Chinese orthography, "SP" (the semantic radical on the left and the phonetic radical on the right) and "PS" characters (the opposite structure), to examine foveal splitting effects in event-related potential (ERP) recordings. We showed that when participants silently named centrally presented characters, there was a significant interaction between character type and hemisphere in N1 amplitude: SP characters elicited larger N1 compared with PS characters in the left hemisphere, whereas the right hemisphere had the opposite pattern.

Cordycepin (3'-deoxyadenosine), a pure compound of Cordyceps sinensis, has been illustrated with anti-tumor effects. In the present study, the apoptotic effect of cordycepin on OEC-M1, a human oral squamous cancer cell line, was investigated by morphological observations, cell viability assay, annexin V-FITC analysis and flow cytometry methods. Results demonstrated that the number of rounded-up cell increased as treatment duration of cordycepin (100 microM) increased from 3 to 48 h, and the plasma membrane blebbing could be observed after 12 h treatment.
