The purpose of this work was to evaluate the efficacy of labeling human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) by ionic superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) without a transfection agent and verifying its capability to be detected with clinical 1.5 T magnetic resonance (MR) at the single-cell level. Prognostic value of arterial/alveolar oxygen tension ratio (a/APO2) in acute pulmonary embolism.

Background: Because the arterial/alveolar oxygen tension ratio (a/APO2) is relatively constant throughout the entire range of fractional inspired oxygen concentration (FiO2), its use in determining the prognosis of acute pulmonary embolism (APE) was investigated.

Methods And Results: This study retrospectively assessed 202 consecutive patients with APE confirmed by computed tomography or high probability lung scintigraphy. All patients underwent initial arterial blood gas analysis during the first 24 h of admission.

Mistaken diagnosis of keratoconus because of corneal warpage induced by hydrogel lens wear.

Purpose: We report a case of corneal warpage secondary to hydrogel lens wear that was initially mistaken as a case of keratoconus.

Methods: A 26-year-old Chinese female hydrogel lens wearer presented with an interest in refractive surgery. After topographies and pachymetries were performed, keratoconus was initially diagnosed for her right eye and suspect keratoconus diagnosed for her left eye.

Alpha-fetoprotein-producing pancreatic acinar cell carcinoma.

A 47-year-old man with chronic hepatitis B had progressive elevated alpha-fetoprotein of 2 years' duration. A pancreatic tail tumor, instead of liver tumor, was detected. He underwent elective distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy and the pathology turned out to be acinar cell carcinoma of the pancreas.

A new approach to image copy detection based on extended feature sets.

Conventional image copy detection research concentrates on finding features that are robust enough to resist various kinds of image attacks. However, finding a globally effective fealure is difficult and, in many cases, domain dependent. Instead of imply extracting features from copyrighted images directly, we propose a new framework called the extended feature set for detecting copies of images.

An examination of semantic radical combinability effects with lateralized cues in Chinese character recognition.

Auclair and Siéroff examined lateralized cuing effects in the identification of centrally presented letter strings and reported no cuing effects for short word stimuli. They argued for a redistribution of attention over the entire word for short familiar words. We explored cuing effects with Chinese phonetic compounds, which can be considered extreme examples of short words, in a character-level semantic judgment task.

Identification of regional air pollution characteristic and the correlation with public health in Taiwan.

This study aims to classify regions with different air pollution characteristics into groups in Taiwan, and further to evaluate and compare the air quality of various groups. A selected multivariate analysis technique, cluster analysis, is applied to the pollution monitoring dataset which including PM10, SO2, NO2, CO and O3. The obtained results have proved that the regions with similar air pollution characteristic can be appropriately grouped by applying cluster analysis.

Context: Graves' disease (GD) is an autoimmune disorder with genetic predisposition. The thyroglobulin (Tg) is a major autoantigen for GD. The human Tg gene polymorphism has specific features that make it important in GD.

Context: Neurocognitive impairment in schizophrenia is severe and is an important predictor of functional outcome. The relative effect of the second-generation (atypical) antipsychotic drugs and older agents on neurocognition has not been comprehensively determined.

Objective: To compare the neurocognitive effects of several second-generation antipsychotics and a first-generation antipsychotic, perphenazine.

Cholesteryl ester transfer protein B1B1 genotype as a predictor of coronary artery disease in Taiwanese with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Diabetes is known to be a high-risk factor for coronary artery disease (CAD), and lipid abnormalities have been found to possibly contribute to CAD in diabetic patients. Cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) gene TaqIB polymorphism is associated with lipid profile variability, and this polymorphism may be a risk factor for CAD in diabetic patients. To clarify the relationship between CETP TaqIB gene polymorphism and CAD, we enrolled in our study 365 Taiwanese with type 2 diabetes mellitus (101 with CAD and 264 without CAD).

Late migration of a Sideris septal occluder device for closure of atrial septal defect into the left atrium with mitral valve obstruction.

The transcatheter closure of atrial septal defects provides an alternative to surgery, and various devices, such as the Sideris buttoned device, have been prescribed. Late complications have been rare and have not yet been reported within 2 years of implantation. This report presents a case of delayed migration of a Sideris buttoned device occurring 6 years after successful implantation.

Use of Antipsychotics Pre- and Post-Dissemination of CATIE Data.

We investigated the share of branded and generic antipsychotics before and after the publication of the CATIE results in September, 2005. According to our data, the publication of the CATIE results has had very little impact on new patient starts. To determine the impact of CATIE on use of olanzapine (Zyprexa((R))) subsequent to first line therapy, we also examined product share for switch/add patients.

Second-generation antipsychotics: reviewing the cost-effectiveness component of the CATIE trial.

The cost-effectiveness component of the 18-month CATIE trial of schizophrenia pharmacotherapy (n = 1460) showed that the first-generation antipsychotic perphenazine was US$300-600 per month less expensive than each of four second-generation antipsychotics, and no less effective across multiple measures. We consider whether or not each of eight potential methodological limitations could weaken this conclusion: follow-up rates, study duration, sample characteristics, the choice of outcome measures, exclusion of patients with tardive dyskinesia from assignment to perphenazine, choice of study drugs and doses, reliance on intention-to-treat analysis, and differences in prestudy treatment. We conclude that results of CATIE are robust to these limitations.

Effects of antipsychotic medications on psychosocial functioning in patients with chronic schizophrenia: findings from the NIMH CATIE study.

Objective: This study examined the relative effects of the second-generation antipsychotic drugs and an older representative agent on psychosocial functioning in patients with chronic schizophrenia.

Method: Consenting patients were enrolled in the NIMH Clinical Antipsychotic Trials of Intervention Effectiveness (CATIE) project. In phase 1, patients were randomly assigned to receive olanzapine, perphenazine, quetiapine, risperidone, or ziprasidone for up to 18 months.

Effectiveness of olanzapine, quetiapine, and risperidone in patients with chronic schizophrenia after discontinuing perphenazine: a CATIE study.

Angiomatous type of jugular foramen meningioma with neck extension: differential diagnosis from paraganglioma and schwannoma.

Background: Meningiomas involving the jugular foramen and parapharyngeal space are extremely rare. They most commonly occur intracranially and then extend to the extracranial region through the foramen of the skull base, such as jugular foramen. Clinically, these tumors mimic the more common glomus jugulare tumor.

Bifunctional magnetic silica nanoparticles for highly efficient human stem cell labeling.

A superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) nanoparticle is emerging as an ideal probe for noninvasive cell tracking. However, its low intracellular labeling efficiency has limited the potential usage and has evoked great interest in developing new labeling strategies. We have developed fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-incorporated silica-coated core-shell SPIO nanoparticles, SPIO@SiO2(FITC), with diameters of 50 nm, as a bifunctionally magnetic vector that can efficiently label human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs), via clathrin- and actin-dependent endocytosis with subsequent intracellular localization in late endosomes/lysosomes.

Cost-effectiveness of second-generation antipsychotics and perphenazine in a randomized trial of treatment for chronic schizophrenia.

Background: Second-generation antipsychotics have largely replaced first-generation antipsychotics for the treatment of schizophrenia, but a large-scale cost/effectiveness analysis has not been attempted.

Method: Patients with schizophrenia (N=1,493) were assigned to treatment with a first-generation antipsychotic (perphenazine) or one of four second-generation drugs (olanzapine, quetia-pine, risperidone, or ziprasidone) and followed for up to 18 months. Patients with tardive dyskinesia were prohibited from assignment to perphenazine.

Neural correlates of foveal splitting in reading: evidence from an ERP study of Chinese character recognition.

Recent research on foveal structure and reading suggests that the two halves of a centrally fixated word seem to be initially projected to, and processed in, different hemispheres. In the current study, we utilize two contrasting structures in Chinese orthography, "SP" (the semantic radical on the left and the phonetic radical on the right) and "PS" characters (the opposite structure), to examine foveal splitting effects in event-related potential (ERP) recordings. We showed that when participants silently named centrally presented characters, there was a significant interaction between character type and hemisphere in N1 amplitude: SP characters elicited larger N1 compared with PS characters in the left hemisphere, whereas the right hemisphere had the opposite pattern.

The apoptotic effect of cordycepin on human OEC-M1 oral cancer cell line.

Cordycepin (3'-deoxyadenosine), a pure compound of Cordyceps sinensis, has been illustrated with anti-tumor effects. In the present study, the apoptotic effect of cordycepin on OEC-M1, a human oral squamous cancer cell line, was investigated by morphological observations, cell viability assay, annexin V-FITC analysis and flow cytometry methods. Results demonstrated that the number of rounded-up cell increased as treatment duration of cordycepin (100 microM) increased from 3 to 48 h, and the plasma membrane blebbing could be observed after 12 h treatment.

Expressed sequence tags from loblolly pine embryos reveal similarities with angiosperm embryogenesis.
