The goal of the present study is to assess the soil quality in Bulgaria using (i) an appropriate set of soil quality indicators, namely primary nutrients (C, N, P), acidity (pH), physical clay content and potentially toxic elements (PTEs: Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Ni, Cr, As, Hg) and (ii) respective data mining and modeling using chemometrical and geostatistical methods. It has been shown that five latent factors are responsible for the explanation of nearly 70% of the total variance of the data set available (principal components analysis) and each factor is identified in terms of its contribution to the formation of the overall soil quality-the mountain soil factor, the geogenic factor, the ore deposit factor, the low nutrition factor, and the mercury-specific factor. The obtained soil quality patterns were additionally confirmed via hierarchical cluster analysis.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multifactorial autoimmune disease and polymorphisms in the cytokine genes and their receptors are thought to influence its development. The aim of this case-control study was to investigate the association of the IL-17A rs2275913, IL-17RC rs708567 and TGFB1 rs1800469 polymorphisms with SLE, its clinical manifestations and the polymorphisms influence on the IL-17A serum levels. One critical mediator of these responses is the IL-1 family cytokine IL-33, which is rapidly secreted upon acute epithelial injury as an alarmin and induces type 2 immune responses. Aging is associated with a gradual loss of lung function due to increased cellular senescence, decreased regenerative capacity, and impaired innate host defense. One important aspect of innate airway epithelial host defense to nonmicrobial triggers is the secretion of alarmins such as IL-33 and activation of type 2 inflammation, which were previously found to depend on activation of the NADPH oxidase (NOX) homolog DUOX1, and redox-dependent signaling pathways that promote alarmin secretion. Here, we demonstrate that normal aging of C57BL/6J mice resulted in markedly decreased lung innate epithelial type 2 responses to exogenous triggers such as the airborne allergen , which was associated with marked downregulation of DUOX1, as well as DUOX1-mediated redox-dependent signaling.
