Here, we report a simple method to prepare near-IR (NIR) surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates by quickly freezing a citrate-capped Au nanoparticle (AuNP) solution in liquid nitrogen, followed by thawing it at room temperature. This process aggregates AuNPs in a controlled manner by forming ice crystals with smaller grain sizes when compared to a slow freezing process. The resulting smaller AuNP aggregates remain suspended in solution long enough to conduct high-throughput chemical analysis in a microwell plate using the NIR SERS spectroscopy.

Photodynamic priming (PDP) leverages the photobiological effects of subtherapeutic photodynamic therapy (PDT) regimens to modulate the tumor vasculature and stroma. PDP also sensitizes tumors to secondary therapies, such as immunotherapy by inducing a cascade of molecular events, including immunogenic cell death (ICD). The estrogen receptor (ER) designated ERα has actions in many cell and tissue types that impact glucose homeostasis. It is unknown if these include mechanisms in endothelial cells, which have the potential to influence relative obesity, and processes in adipose tissue and skeletal muscle that impact glucose control. Here we show that independent of impact on events in adipose tissue, endothelial ERα promotes glucose tolerance by enhancing endothelial insulin transport to skeletal muscle.

We derive the optimal funding mechanism to incentivize development and production of vaccines against diseases with epidemic potential. In the model, suppliers' costs are private information and investments are noncontractible, precluding cost-reimbursement contracts, requiring fixed-price contracts conditioned on delivery of a successful product. The high failure risk for individual vaccines calls for incentivizing multiple entrants, accomplished by the optimal mechanism, a (w+1)-price reverse Vickrey auction with reserve, where w is the number of selected entrants.

Eubacterium limosum is an acetogenic bacterium of potential industrial relevance for its ability to efficiently metabolize a range of single carbon compounds.
