The rapid, on-site identification of illicit narcotics, such as cocaine, is hindered by the diverse nature of the samples, which can contain a large variety of materials in a wide concentration range. This sample variance has a very strong influence on the analytical methodologies that can be utilized and in general prevents the widespread use of quantitative analysis of illicit narcotics on a routine basis. Raman spectroscopy, coupled with chemometric methods, can be used for in situ qualitative and quantitative analysis of illicit narcotics; however, careful consideration must be given to dealing with the extensive variety of sample types.

BCG vaccination is no longer routinely offered to all medical students in Victoria. Practices in Australia's 15 medical schools vary widely with respect to BCG vaccination and surveillance for tuberculosis (TB) infection during the medical course. Health care workers can be exposed to TB in Australian hospitals, but the risk is much higher if they undertake work in countries with a high prevalence of TB, such as during student electives.

Technologies for promoting quality of organizational services to the developmentally disabled have been evolving over the past several decades. Feedback reinforcement and, often, goal-setting, powerful change tools, generally are incorporated within behavioral interventions. Despite their promise, wide-scale application of these strategies often is impeded by natural and informal organizational contingencies.

Pulpal and tactile sensory detection threshold (SDT) values of the maxillary and mandibular incisor and canine teeth were determined and recorded for young adult subjects at three test sessions. A commercially available monopolar pulp-testing device was used to determine pulpal SDT values, and von Frey hairs were used to determine the tactile SDT values. Statistical analysis of the data indicated that the pulpal and tactile test procedures were sufficiently reliable in identifying what is defined as the true SDT value for both parameters.

We have previously reported the clinical and radiographic findings of a trial in dogs of a new dental implant system after a functional period of eight months. The present report consists of the corresponding qualitative and quantitative histological data. The implant system was fabricated from Ti-6A1-4V and employed a porous-surfaced configuration to achieve implant fixation by bone ingrowth.

The value of reconstituted fibrillar collagen (Zyderm Collagen Implant I, a concentrated solution of pepsin-solubilized, bovin skin collagen) as a bone graft material was tested in 4 mm diameter surgically created defects of rat calvaria. All wounds were allowed to heal for 4 weeks, and were assessed both qualitatively and by computer-assisted morphometry. The fibrillar collagen was found to produce significantly more new bone than no graft or than heat-denatured fibrillar collagen.

Tactile, two-point discrimination, thermal change detection and heat pain thresholds as well as oral stereognostic ability, warmth scaling and heat pain tolerance were compared in a group of 72 subjects with burning mouth syndrome (BMS) and 43 age- and sex-matched control subjects. No differences were found between the BMS and control subjects for any of the sensory modalities tested except for heat pain tolerance. Pain tolerance was significantly decreased for the BMS subjects at the tongue tip, a site of clinical pain in approximately 85% of the subjects tested in this study, but not at the cutaneous lower lip which was a site of pain only in approximately 17% of the subjects tested in this study.

The follow-up study examines the clinical success of sealing pits and fissures of permanent molars in a large auxiliary-based children's dental care program. The success of sealant use after one and two years was assessed using the following independent variables, (1) total number of sealants, (2) tooth location, (3) age of patient, and (4) initial caries status. The computerized records of 4,525 patients with 11,237 sealants were analyzed using the Statistical Analysis System (SAS).

A new endosseous dental implant system incorporating a porous-surface geometry with a tapered, truncated-cone shape was placed bilaterally in edentulous areas of dog mandibles in a two-stage procedure. All implants had been stabilized by bone ingrowth by the time of the second procedure (insertion of a transgingival collar and implant-supported bridge). The transgingival collar had a porous-surface geometry on its apical one-third, and was meant to encourage gingival connective tissue ingrowth and attachment, but in fact provided an excellent milieu for bacterial contamination.

We report here the results of a histological assessment of the initial healing response following implantation into the dog mandible of a porous-surfaced, titanium alloy endosseous dental implant. Two implants were placed in edentulous areas on each side of the mandible of each dog and covered with a full-thickness mucoperiosteal flap. The implant sites on one side of the mandible were allowed to head for four weeks, while those on the other side were allowed to head for eight weeks before the animals were killed.

The role of spinal manipulation in the relief of pain is becoming clearer and more demonstrable as time passes. One approach to this study is the effect of manipulation on the neurochemical mechanisms of antinociception. Chief among these is beta-endorphin, which has been found to produce a wide range of beneficial effects, especially analgesia.

The phagocytosis of collagen within soft connective tissues can be used as an index of collagen turnover and remodeling. The objective of this study was to compare the levels of collagen phagocytosis in periodontal and transseptal ligaments in the rat in order to provide an indication of the relative collagen-turnover activities within these two tissues. Periodontal and transseptal ligaments from two rats were examined by the techniques of electron microscope stereology.

Collagen fibril diameters were measured in electron micrographs of rat skin, gingiva and periodontal ligament. Gingiva was divided into two zones, termed elastin-containing gingiva and attached gingiva, depending on the presence or absence of elastic fibrils. The results revealed that skin had the largest fibrils, followed by elastin-containing gingiva, attached gingiva and periodontal ligament respectively.

Maxillary molars were extracted unilaterally from 4 young male rats so as to leave the agonist mandibular molars in hypofunction. The mandibular molars on the opposite side of the mouth acted as controls. Three days later, the animals were killed by perfusion and all mandibular molars removed en bloc.

Sixty-six patients consecutively admitted to a Coronary Care Unit with a diagnosis of myocardial infarction were evaluated physically, psychologically, and neuroendocrinologically. Records were also kept of appetite and drug intake. Serum cortisol and growth hormone, physical, and mood variables were evaluated daily and the neuroendocrine measures were also taken serially at the time of removal from the cardiac monitor.
