This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the composite shade and distance from the light-curing unit (LCU) tip on the irradiance reaching the bottom of composite disks and on the depth of polymerization. Composites of three shades (opaque - OXDC, bleach - BXL, and A2) were inserted into molds with 3-mm of thickness positioned over a spectrometer and photo-activated with the LCU (Bluephase) tip placed at 0 or 1 cm from the composite surface. The mean irradiance reaching the bottom of composite was recorded during the entire photo-activation (30 s).

Not Your Everyday Case of Acute Pancreatitis: A Rare Complication of a Common Diagnosis.

Pancreaticopericardial fistula is an extremely rare complication of chronic pancreatitis and is virtually unheard of in the setting of acute pancreatitis. A 67-year-old male presented with acute pancreatitis complicated by pancreaticopericardial fistulization. The patient's initial presentation was consistent with tamponade physiology.

Context: Beginning in 1994, clinical laboratories performing nonwaived testing were required, under the regulations implementing the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA), to enroll and participate in a proficiency testing (PT) program approved by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Successful PT performance is a requirement for maintaining CLIA certification to perform testing in certain specialties and subspecialties and for specific analytes.

Under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA) regulations, laboratory testing is categorized as waived (from routine regulatory oversight) or nonwaived based on the complexity of the tests; tests of moderate and high complexity are nonwaived tests. Laboratories that perform molecular genetic testing are subject to the general CLIA quality systems requirements for nonwaived testing and the CLIA personnel requirements for tests of high complexity. Although many laboratories that perform molecular genetic testing comply with applicable regulatory requirements and adhere to professional practice guidelines,specific guidelines for quality assurance are needed to ensure the quality of test performance.

A regional approach to reconstruction of the upper lip.

Purpose: This articles reviews the results obtained when cheek or lower lip flaps, or a combination of these flaps, are used for the reconstruction of defects of the upper lip.

Patients And Methods: Twenty-four cases of either partial or total full-thickness defects of the upper lip were reconstructed. Four cases with lateral full-thickness partial defects were reconstructed by advancing a cheek flap using the Bernard-Burow method.

Internal/external locus of control, self-esteem, and parental verbal interaction of at-risk black male adolescents.

We investigated the relationship between three factors--internal/external locus of control, self-esteem, and parental verbal interaction--for at-risk Black male adolescents in the United States. Forty-two male students in Grades 6, 7, and 8 who had been identified by their teachers as being at risk completed the Locus of Control Scale for Children (Nowicki & Strickland, 1973), the Self-Esteem Inventory (Coopersmith, 1967), and the Verbal Interaction Questionnaire (Blake, 1991). A moderate positive relationship found between self-esteem and parental verbal interaction was consistent with a previous finding for White high school students.
