Involuntary remembering and ADHD: Do individuals with ADHD symptoms experience high volumes of involuntary memories in everyday life?

Spontaneous mind wandering has been implicated as a feature of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and researchers have wondered if spontaneous remembering is also a feature of ADHD. In this study, we compared spontaneous cognition, principally involuntary autobiographical memories, in participants who scored inside the ADHD range on BAARS-IV to those who scored outside of the ADHD range. In Study 1, participants reported their involuntary memories and spontaneous thoughts on a laboratory measure of involuntary memory (the vigilance task), as well as estimated their daily involuntary memory frequencies on a separate questionnaire.

Metabolic profiling of aortic stenosis and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy identifies mechanistic contrasts in substrate utilization.

Aortic stenosis (AS) and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) are distinct disorders leading to left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), but whether cardiac metabolism substantially differs between these in humans remains to be elucidated. We undertook an invasive (aortic root, coronary sinus) metabolic profiling in patients with severe AS and HCM in comparison with non-LVH controls to investigate cardiac fuel selection and metabolic remodeling. These patients were assessed under different physiological states (at rest, during stress induced by pacing).

Purpose: Neutron capture enhanced particle therapy (NCEPT) is a proposed augmentation of charged particle therapy that exploits thermal neutrons generated internally, within the treatment volume via nuclear fragmentation, to deliver a biochemically targeted radiation dose to cancer cells. This work is the first experimental demonstration of NCEPT, performed using both carbon and helium ion beams with 2 different targeted neutron capture agents (NCAs).

Naturally occurring radioactive materials in offshore infrastructure: Understanding formation and characteristics of baryte scale during decommissioning planning.

Contaminants, including naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) of the 238-uranium and 232-thorium decay series, have been recognized as a global research priority to inform offshore petroleum infrastructure decommissioning decisions. This study aimed to characterize pipeline scale retrieved from a decommissioned subsea well tubular pipe through high-resolution elemental mapping and isotopic analysis. This was achieved by utilizing transmission electron microscopy, Synchrotron x-ray fluorescence, photostimulated luminescence autoradiography and Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry.

Impact of COVID-19 state-wide lockdown on older adult presentations to Queensland emergency departments.

Objective: To determine the impact of the COVID-19 state-wide lockdown on ED presentations for older adults in Queensland, Australia.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study pertaining to adults aged 70+ years who presented to Queensland public hospital EDs across three separate time periods; 11 March to 30 June 2018 and 2019 (pre-pandemic average), 2020 (COVID-19 state-wide lockdown) and 2021 (post-state-wide lockdown). The primary outcome was change in presentation rates to ED.

Background: Extracellular renal interstitial guanosine cyclic 3',5'-monophosphate (cGMP) inhibits renal proximal tubule (RPT) sodium (Na) reabsorption via Src (Src family kinase) activation. Through which target extracellular cGMP acts to induce natriuresis is unknown. We hypothesized that cGMP binds to the extracellular α1-subunit of NKA (sodium-potassium ATPase) on RPT basolateral membranes to inhibit Na transport similar to ouabain-a cardiotonic steroid.

There are no universally agreed upon guidelines for when to pursue advanced imaging, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), in the workup of SRCs in the adolescent population. Our experience indicates that MRI rarely contributes to management.

Comparative Genomics of Closely-Related Cluster DR Bacteriophages.

Bacteriophages infecting bacteria of the genus have increasingly gained interest in the scientific community for their diverse applications in agriculture, biotechnology, and medicine, ranging from biocontrol agents in wastewater management to the treatment of opportunistic pathogens in pulmonary disease patients. However, due to the time and costs associated with experimental isolation and cultivation, host ranges for many bacteriophages remain poorly characterized, hindering a more efficient usage of bacteriophages in these areas. Here, we perform a series of computational genomic inferences to predict the putative host ranges of all cluster DR bacteriophages known to date.

Here, we characterized the complete genome of the BiggityBass, a lytic subcluster DR bacteriophage infecting Gordonia terrae CAG3. Its 63.2-kb genome contains 84 protein-coding genes, of which 40 could be assigned a putative function.

We describe a case where a man in his 80s presented with subacute, progressive fatigue and weakness. He had received an outpatient work-up for possible haematological malignancy, but eventually presented to the emergency department for worsening weakness.

The Stanford Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy Total Body Irradiation Technique.

Purpose: In this article, we describe the technical aspects of the Stanford volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) total body irradiation (TBI) technique, compare it with other VMAT-TBI techniques, and share our initial experience.

Methods And Materials: From September 2019 to August 2021, 35 patients were treated with VMAT-TBI at our institution. Treatment planning was performed using in-house developed automated planning scripts.

Background: How signals from activated angiotensin type-2 receptors (ATR) mediate inhibition of sodium ion (Na) reabsorption in renal proximal tubule cells is currently unknown. Protein phosphatases including PP2A (protein phosphatase 2A) have been implicated in ATR signaling in tissues other than kidney. We investigated whether inhibition of protein phosphatase PP2A reduced ATR-mediated natriuresis and evaluated changes in PP2A activity and localization after renal ATR activation in normal 4- and 10-week-old control Wistar-Kyoto rats and 4-week-old prehypertensive and 10-week-old hypertensive spontaneously hypertensive rats.

In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in space exploration, supported by the accelerated technological advancements in the field. A critical component in regulating the human pathophysiology is represented by the cardiovascular system, which may be heavily affected in these extreme environments of microgravity and radiation.

Mitochondrial Translocator Protein (TSPO) Expression in the Brain After Whole Body Gamma Irradiation.

The brain's early response to low dose ionizing radiation, as may be encountered during diagnostic procedures and space exploration, is not yet fully characterized. In the brain parenchyma, the mitochondrial translocator protein (TSPO) is constitutively expressed at low levels by endothelial cells, and can therefore be used to assess the integrity of the brain's vasculature. At the same time, the inducible expression of TSPO in activated microglia, the brain's intrinsic immune cells, is a regularly observed early indicator of subtle or incipient brain pathology.

We conducted an updated epidemiological study of Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) in Australia by using registry data to establish the risk of vision loss among different LHON mutations, sex, age at onset, and mitochondrial haplogroup. We identified 96 genetically unrelated LHON pedigrees, including 56 unpublished pedigrees, and updated 40 previously known pedigrees, comprising 620 affected individuals and 4,948 asymptomatic carriers. The minimum prevalence of vision loss due to LHON in Australia in 2020 was one in 68,403 individuals.

Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, many urban residents stopped riding public transit despite their reliance on it to reach essential services like healthcare. Few studies have examined the implications of public transit reliance on riders' ability to reach healthcare when transit is disrupted. To understand how shocks to transportation systems impact healthcare access, this study measures the impact of avoiding public transit on the ability of riders to access healthcare and pharmacy services during lockdowns.
