Mononuclear inflammatory cells (MC) isolated from the livers and spleens of mice with chronic graft-vs-host disease (CGVHD) to minor histocompatibility antigens (B10.D2----BALB/c) show defective proliferation when stimulated with Con A and LPS. In turn, both CGVHD liver and spleen cells suppress the proliferation of mitogen-stimulated normal spleen cells in a genetically unrestricted manner.

Objective: To assess the extent to which hypotheses about potential adverse effects of epidural analgesia during labour can be tested using evidence from controlled comparisons of epidural with non-epidural forms of pain relief.

Inclusion Criteria: Prospective studies in which an attempt had been made to use random allocation to generate comparable groups of women receiving epidural and non-epidural forms of pain relief during labour. IDENTIFICATION OF RELEVANT STUDIES: Systematic hand search of a total of 36 anaesthetic, obstetric and general journals, and more than 30 other journals (1950-1990), and a search of MEDLINE (1966-1990).

We report our initial experience in Nottingham of use of the AO Dynamic Condylar Screw (DCS) implant system for internal fixation of fractures of the proximal and distal femur. The implant has been used in 24 cases over a 2-year period, and with an average follow-up of 1 year the results have been as favourable as those in reports of other comparable implants, but there have been a number of technical difficulties, particularly with the fixation of osteoporotic distal femoral fractures. The DCS can be used in all situations where the 95 degrees blade plate has previously been used and technically it is easier to insert correctly.

The pathology of bronchial asthma demonstrates a multicellular process. The airway mucosa is infiltrated with both mononuclear cells and granulocytes, of which the eosinophil is particularly prominent. In an attempt to further the understanding of the interactions between different cells, we have elected to study the effects of monocyte/macrophage-derived cell products on granulocytes, because of the evidence for monocyte/macrophage activation in bronchial asthma.

Twenty-four hearts in which both great arteries arose from the right ventricle were studied to establish variations present within the fibrous skeleton and infundibular morphologies. Variations were also noted in the location of the ventricular septal defect and measurements were obtained of the outlet septum and the circumferences of the arterial valves. Completely muscular subarterial infundibulums were present in only 9 (37.

A 19-month-old black girl had a radical nephrectomy for a Wilms' tumor that contained areas of epithelium indistinguishable from renal cell carcinoma. She was treated with chemotherapy but subsequently had pulmonary metastases develop and massive abdominal recurrence. The recurrent tumor was histologically renal cell carcinoma with no identifiable Wilms' tumor elements.

Murine chronic graft-vs-host disease (CGBHD) to minor histocompatibility antigens (B10.D2----BALB/c) is characterized by inflammatory destruction of intrahepatic bile ducts, scleroderma-like skin lesions, and lymphoid involution. Spleen cells isolated from this model proliferate poorly when stimulated with mitogens.

We compared parent-reported problems and competencies for national samples of 2,600 4-16-year-olds assessed at intake into mental health services and 2,600 demographically matched nonreferred children assessed in a home interview survey. Parents responded to the ACQ Behavior Checklist, which includes 23 competence items, three competence scales, 216 problem items, eight syndrome scales, Internalizing, Externalizing, and total competence and problem scores. Most items and scales discriminated significantly (p less than .

We compared 24 low-birthweight subjects of an experimental intervention (LBWE), 32 no-treatment controls (LBWC), and 37 normal birthweight (NBW) subjects. The intervention involved 7 hospital sessions and 4 home sessions in which a nurse helped mothers adapt to their LBW babies. At age 7, LBWE scored significantly higher than LBWC on the Kaufman Mental Processing Composite (p less than .

Foreign bodies in the female genital tract are well recognized as a cause of pain, discharge, secretions, and infection. In the small child, the presence of a vaginal discharge is usually associated with either a common object which has been inserted or sexual abuse complicated by a sexually transmitted disease. A 3-year-old child presented with a recurrent labial secretion and drainage due to an unusual foreign body.

We studied 20 hearts with tetralogy of Fallot with particular reference to the morphology of the fibrous continuity between the aortic and atrioventricular valves and of the ventricular outflow tracts. The extent of valvar fibrous continuity varied with the degree of aortic override, with the extent of the perimembranous ventricular septal defect opening between the ventricular inlets, and with the development of the ventriculoinfundibular fold. This, when fused with the septomarginal trabeculation, produced discontinuity between the leaflets of the tricuspid valve and the continuous leaflets of the aortic and mitral valves, as well as a muscular posteroinferior rim to the defect.

We reviewed the outcome of all infants referred to, and accepted in, our extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) program during a 52-month period. One hundred sixty-seven referrals, representing 158 infants and nine mothers who had not yet delivered their infants, were accepted. Eighteen infants (11.

In primary biliary cirrhosis, chronic graft-versus-host disease, and chronic liver transplant rejection, immunologic mechanisms appear to cause destruction of intrahepatic bile ducts and consequently may lead to liver failure. Understanding those mechanisms may lead to improved therapy. Recent findings and clinically relevant concepts are discussed.

The use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has increased significantly during the last 4 years, with more than 2400 infants now having been treated with the technique. In spite of an ill-defined role for ECMO as well as the potential for neurologic sequelae for these patients, additional centers continue to be established across the United States. To provide information regarding the number of babies who could be expected to require ECMO, the early neonatal deaths for the state of Georgia were reviewed for the 2-year period 1983-1984.
