Associations among progesterone, estradiol-17 beta, oxytocin and prostaglandin in cattle treated with hCG during diestrus to extend corpus luteum function.

Treatment of cattle during the middle of the luteal phase with appropriate doses of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) causes a 5 d extension of the estrous cycle. Three experiments were conducted to determine how treatment with hCG affected the pattern of secretion of prostaglandin F2 alpha, as indicated by blood levels of 13,14-dihydro-15-keto-prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGFM). In experiment 1, Holstein cows were given saline (Sal) or hCG (10,000 IU, im) on d 10 of the estrous cycle and blood samples were collected over a 6 h period on d 14 and 18 during which oxytocin (10 and 100 IU, iv) was given at 2 and 4 h.

Ontogeny of the gonadal receptor for luteinizing hormone in the pig.

Homogenates of porcine ovaries and testes collected between 70 d post coitum and 42 d post partum were incubated with radiolabelled human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) to determine the presence and relative amounts of luteinizing hormone/human chorionic gonadotropin (LH/hCG) receptors. Specific binding of (125)I-hCG to ovaries and testes occurred at all stages of fetal and postnatal development. Ovarian tissue possessed relatively low affinity, high capacity LH/hCG binding sites that were most numerous at Day 80 of gestation and decreased thereafter.

Retroperitoneal lymphocele after abdominal aortic surgery.

Lymphoceles may occur as a result of lymphatic injury during abdominal aortic surgery. These lymphatic collections may occur as a retroperitoneal mass or as groin lymphoceles. Four cases are presented in which persistent retroperitoneal lymphoceles were discovered 2 to 8 years after surgery.

A novel class of "GABAergic" agents: 1-aryl-3-(aminoalkylidene)oxindoles.

Antagonism of mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) induced convulsions, reflecting a GABAergic mechanism, was observed in a series of 1-aryl-3-(aminoalkylidene)oxindoles. Optimal MPA antagonism was associated with 3-halo, 3-alkyl, and/or 4-alkoxy substituents in the pendant aryl ring and with (dimethylamino)methylene, 1-(dimethylamino)-ethylidene and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinylidene side chains. The precise mechanism of action of these agents is unclear at this time; however, they are not GABA mimics and they do not affect GABA levels.

Pathogenicity of rotavirus in rabbits.

The role of rotavirus in diarrheal disease of rabbits was investigated, and a model for human rotavirus infection was established. Orogastric inoculation of 8- and 12-week-old New Zealand White rabbits with a rabbit strain of rotavirus (L:ALA:84) resulted in fecal shedding of virus for 6 to 8 days from 2 to 5 days after inoculation. Most rabbits exhibited diarrhea, coincident with the onset of viral shedding, which persisted for 2 to 4 days.

Influence of dietary protein on reproductive performance of dairy cows.

From 10 +/- 3.5 d after parturition to 149 +/- 3.5 d of lactation, 146 cows (109 Holstein and 37 Ayrshires) were fed either a 15 or 20% crude protein diet of 45% sorghum silage and 55% concentrate.

Epidemiology and etiology of diarrhea in colony-born Macaca nemestrina.

The epidemiology of diarrhea in colony-born M. nemestrina was studied in 205 neonates and infants in an Infant Primate Research Laboratory (IPRL), and in 248 neonates, juveniles and adolescents up to 4 years of age at a separate breeding and holding facility (Primate Field Station, PFS). Computerized medical records of individual animals over a 5-year period were analyzed to determine the incidence of diarrhea; age, duration and number of episodes; mortality and etiology.

Comparison of a slow-release trimethoprim with co-trimoxazole: efficacy and selection of resistance in the Enterobacteriaceae.

One hundred and fifty one patients with symptoms of urinary tract infection were treated randomly in a double blind study with a slow release form of trimethoprim or with co-trimoxazole. Similar cure rates were seen. There was no difference between the proportions of patients in the two groups who acquired trimethoprim-resistant Enterobacteriaceae.

Neuroleptic activity of chiral trans-hexahydro-gamma-carbolines.

A series of trans-8-fluoro-5-(4-fluorophenyl)-2,3,4,4a,5, 9b-hexahydro-1H-pyrido[4,3-b]indoles with various N-2 substituents has been prepared and tested for neuroleptic activity [( 3H]spiroperidol binding and amphetamine antagonism). Several members of this series showed exceptional in vivo potency, especially the hydantoin derivatives 27-30. Resolution into the enantiomers showed that neuroleptic activity is associated with the 4aS,9bS absolute configuration.

Synthesis and dopamine autoreceptor activity of a 5-(methylmercapto)methyl-substituted derivative of (+/-)-3-PPP (3-(3-hydroxyphenyl)-1-n-propylpiperidine).

In an attempt to enhance the potency of the dopamine autoreceptor agonist 3-PPP, racemic cis-3-(3-hydroxyphenyl)-5-[(methylmercapto)methyl]-N-n-propylpiperidine has been prepared in a stereoselective synthesis. NMR studies of 3 show a diequatorial conformation for the 3- and 5-substituents, which gives compound 3 an intriguing overlap with the ergoline derivative pergolide. Pharmacological testing revealed that 3, which is a 5-(methylmercapto)methyl derivative of racemic 3-PPP does not show the anticipated potency increase as a dopamine autoreceptor agonist.

Invertase activity and the kinetin-stimulated enlargement of detached radish cotyledons.

Cytokinin treatment is known to promote expansion of light-grown excised radish (Raphanus sativus L. cv Crimson Giant) cotyledons. This expansion, at least in part, seems to be related to an increased accumulation of osmotically active reducing sugars.

Taxol-induced anaphase reversal: evidence that elongating microtubules can exert a pushing force in living cells.

The effects of taxol on mitosis in Haemanthus endosperm were studied. Immuno-gold staining was used to visualize microtubules; observations on microtubule arrangements were correlated with studies in vivo. Mitosis is slowed down, but not arrested, by taxol over a wide range of concentrations.

Trend in levels of N-nitrosopyrrolidine in fried bacon.

Commercially purchased bacon has been periodically analyzed since 1971 for N-nitrosopyrrolidine in the fried product. The downward trend in the concentration of N-nitrosopyrrolidine that has been observed is partially explained by the use of reduced levels of nitrite and increased levels of ascorbate in bacon curing mixtures.

Mercury: results on mass, radius, ionosphere, and atmosphere from mariner 10 dual-frequency radio signals.

Analysis of the radio-tracking data from Mariner 10 yields 6,023,600 +/- 600 for the ratio of the mass of the sun to that of Mercury, in very good agreement with values determined earlier from radar data alone. Occultation measurements yielded values for the radius of Mercury of 2440 +/- 2 and 2438 +/- 2 kilometers at laditudes of 2 degrees N and 68 degrees N, respectively, again in close agreement with the average equatorial radius of 2439 +/- 1 kilometers determined from radar data. Venus: mass, gravity field, atmosphere, and ionosphere as measured by the mariner 10 dual-frequency radio system.

Analysis of the Doppler tracking data near encounter yields a value for the ratio of the mass of the sun to that of Venus of 408,523.9 +/- 1.2, which is in good agreement with prior determinations based on data from Mariner 2 and Mariner 5.
