Prolyl Hydroxylase Domain protein 2 (PHD2) targets Hypoxia Inducible Factor alpha subunits (HIFα) for oxygen-dependent proline hydroxylation that leads to subsequent ubiquitination and degradation of HIFα. In addition to HIF proteins, growing evidence suggested that PHD2 may exert its multifaceted function through hydroxylase-dependent or independent activities. Given the critical role of PHD2 in diverse biological processes, it is important to comprehensively identify potential PHD2 interacting proteins.

Sedimentary co-exposure to bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate and titanium dioxide nanoparticles aggravate ecotoxicity and ecological risks through disrupted bioenergetics in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Emerging contaminants in estuarine sediments, such as bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and titanium dioxide nanoparticles (nTiO), pose ecotoxicological risks that may be exacerbated by co-contamination. This study investigated the impacts of DEHP, nTiO, and their combinations at environmentally relevant concentrations (1, 10, and 100 μg/g) on the soil nematode Caenorhabditis elegans in estuarine-like sediment (14.25‰ salinity).

GRADE-based procalcitonin guideline for emergency departments.

Procalcitonin is a useful biomarker for infection. Over the past two decades, there has been much research on the clinical applications of procalcitonin, yet the majority of these studies have been conducted in the intensive care setting. Despite the extensive use of procalcitonin in emergency departments, there have been no guidelines focusing specifically on these clinical settings.

Introduction: Despite the many benefits of smartphones, researchers have raised concerns over problematic smartphone use (PSU) and its negative effects on physical and psychological well-being. Studies examining PSU and its impact among adults remain limited. Hence, we aim to examine the prevalence of PSU among adults in Singapore, and explore its associations with smartphone activities, sleep quality, and psychological well-being, as well as age and gender-related differences in these associations.

Development and characterization of pH-sensitive zerumbone-encapsulated liposomes for lung fibrosis via inhalation Route.

Zerumbone (ZER), a compound derived from the rhizome of Zingiber Zerumbet (L.) Smith, has demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties but suffers from poor water solubility, limiting its clinical application. While ZER's effects on lung inflammation are known, its role in lung fibrosis remains unexplored.

Hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma of the lung: a case report and literature review.

Background: Primary pulmonary hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma (HCCC) is an exceedingly rare tumor with unique clinicopathological features, posing major diagnostic challenges.

Case Presentation: We present a case of a 74-year-old woman with a lung nodule incidentally detected in the right middle lobe (RML) through F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (F-FDG PET/CT) imaging. Through comprehensive evaluations by thoracic surgeons, she underwent video-assisted thoracic surgery of RML lobectomy to excise the lung nodule.

Comparing the obesogenic effect and regulatory mechanisms of long-term exposure to per/polyfluoroalkyl substances with different terminal groups in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Per/polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are ubiquitous, bioaccumulative, and recalcitrant contaminants, posing global exposure and health risks. The effects of chemical structures on toxicities and the mechanisms of their obesogenic effects were largely unclear. This study used the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans to assess the impact of long-term exposure to different PFASs (PFNA, PFOSA, PFBS, PFHxS, 6:2 FTS, 4:2 FTS, PFOA, and PFOS) on growth and lipid metabolism and discussed the obesogenic mechanisms of selected PFASs.

Effects of Oral Nutritional Supplement with β-Hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate (HMB) on Biochemical and Hematological Indices in Community-Dwelling Older Adults at Risk of Malnutrition: Findings from the SHIELD Study.

Malnutrition may result in abnormal biochemical and hematological indices. This planned prespecified analysis investigated the effects of a specialized oral nutritional supplement (ONS) on biochemical and hematological indices in community-dwelling older adults at risk of malnutrition. In the Strengthening Health in ELDerly through nutrition (SHIELD) study, 811 older adults aged 65 years and above took part in this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multi-center study.

Precision-engineered PEGylated liposome for dual payload delivery: enhancing efficacy of Doxorubicin hydrochloride and miR-145 mimics in breast cancer cells.

Micro-145 down-regulation is frequently found in breast cancers, indicating its potential as a therapeutic target. The introduction of exogenous miR-145 directly to the tumor sites has been a hurdle due to limited delivery, low bioavailability, and hence lower therapeutic efficacy. Thus, this study aims to synthesize and characterize PEGylated liposome co-loaded with Dox-HCl and miR-145 mimics to investigate its anti-proliferative activity against MDA-MB-231 cells.

Cardiac autonomic regulation following a 246-km mountain ultra-marathon: An observational study.

Physical exercise requires integrated autonomic and cardiovascular adjustments to maintain homeostasis. We aimed to observe acute posture-related changes in blood pressure, and apply a portable noninvasive monitor to measure the heart index for detecting arrhythmia among elite participants of a 246-km mountain ultra-marathon. Nine experienced ultra-marathoners (8 males and 1 female) participating in the Run Across Taiwan Ultra-marathon in 2018 were enrolled.

Background: Analysis of short-term emergency department (ED) revisits is a common emergency care quality assurance practice. Previous studies have explored various risk factors of ED revisits; however, laboratory data were usually omitted. This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic significance of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte (PLR), and systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) in predicting outcomes of patients revisiting the ED.

Background: Interstitial lung disease (ILD) treatment is a critical unmet need. Selenium is an essential trace element for human life and an antioxidant that activates glutathione, but the gap between its necessity and its toxicity is small and requires special attention. Whether selenium can be used in the treatment of ILD remains unclear.

High myopia at high altitudes.

Optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) increases significantly at high altitudes, and is associated with the presence and severity of acute mountain sickness (AMS). Exposure to hypobaria, hypoxia, and coldness when hiking also impacts intraocular pressure (IOP). To date, little is known about ocular physiological responses in trekkers with myopia at high altitudes.

Mechanical and biological properties of poly-ε-caprolactone membrane for pleurodesis: A preclinical study in pigs.

Background/purpose: Biomaterial implants are emerging as a treatment choice for pleurodesis; however, the optimal biomaterial and form for managing spontaneous pneumothorax, particularly post-video-assisted thoracic surgery, remain under investigation. This study evaluated the mechanical and biological properties of the poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL) membrane as a sclerosing agent for pleurodesis in Landrace pigs.

Methods: Twenty-four Landrace pigs were split into two groups for mechanical abrasion and PCL membrane pleurodesis, with the latter group's PCL meshes inserted using video-assisted thoracic surgery.

Microbiota-gut-brain axis and its therapeutic applications in neurodegenerative diseases.

The human gastrointestinal tract is populated with a diverse microbial community. The vast genetic and metabolic potential of the gut microbiome underpins its ubiquity in nearly every aspect of human biology, including health maintenance, development, aging, and disease. The advent of new sequencing technologies and culture-independent methods has allowed researchers to move beyond correlative studies toward mechanistic explorations to shed light on microbiome-host interactions.

Frameworks for measuring population health: A scoping review.

Introduction: Many regions in the world are using the population health approach and require a means to measure the health of their population of interest. Population health frameworks provide a theoretical grounding for conceptualization of population health and therefore a logical basis for selection of indicators. The aim of this scoping review was to provide an overview and summary of the characteristics of existing population health frameworks that have been used to conceptualize the measurement of population health.

Zearalenone (ZEN) is a prevalent mycotoxin that severely impacts human and animal health. However, the possible interactions between ZEN exposure, pathogen infection, immune system, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) were rarely investigated. We studied the effects of early-life ZEN (50 µM) exposure on the immune response of Caenorhabditis elegans against Bacillus thuringiensis infection and the associated mechanisms.

Safety assessment of poly--caprolactone in the treatment of primary spontaneous pneumothorax.

Background/purpose: Biomaterial-based implants are gaining traction as an option for pleurodesis treatment, yet the search for the best biomaterial or the most suitable shape to handle spontaneous pneumothorax continues. This forward-looking research assessed the use of a poly--caprolactone membrane for its safety when applied as a sclerosant in pleurodesis procedures in human patients.

Methods: From July 2017 to February 2018, we conducted a Phase I trial in which 10 patients with primary spontaneous pneumothorax were treated using video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery with a poly--caprolactone membrane.
