Inducible activation of nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB) inhibits the apoptotic response to chemotherapy and irradiation. Activation of NF-kappaB via phosphorylation of an inhibitor protein IkappaB leads to degradation of IkappaB through the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway. We hypothesized that inactivation of proteasome function will inhibit inducible NF-kappaB activation, thereby increasing levels of apoptosis in response to chemotherapy and enhancing antitumor effects.

Methods: At the 6-week postpartum visit, the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale was administered to women who gave birth in Olmsted County between July 28, 1997 and March 28, 1998. Study sites included all ambulatory clinics that provide pregnancy care in the county, and women who missed postpartum visits were contacted by mail.
Objective: Our purpose was to determine the differences in postoperative morbidity in obese women who had a supraumbilical or a Pfannenstiel incision at cesarean delivery.
Study Design: A case-control retrospective review was conducted of all patients who were at >150% ideal body weight when undergoing cesarean delivery between 1989 and 1995 by means of either a supraumbilical or a Pfannenstiel incision. Patients were excluded if medical records were unavailable.
Background: Telemedicine has the potential to revolutionize the delivery of dermatologic care to underserved areas.
Objective: Our purpose was to compare diagnoses from two types of dermatology consultations: telemedicine using store-and-forward (SAF) technology, and traditional face-to-face (FTF) office visits.
Methods: Skin conditions were imaged with a consumer-grade digital camera.
Objective: To investigate the potential role of a store-and-forward (SAF) telemedicine system in specialty consultations initiated by primary care physicians.
Materials And Methods: In this pilot telemedicine study, patients needing consultations in cardiology, dermatology, endocrinology, and orthopedics had both standard face-to-face (FTF) consultations and SAF consultations.
Results: Fifteen patients had both FTF and SAF consultations, 4 had echocardiograms transmitted for an SAF consultation only, and 1 had an SAF consultation but no FTF appointment.

Better training and nutrition practices are responsible for much of this difference, but whatever the mechanism, the balance between muscle protein synthesis and breakdown must be in favor of increased muscle protein. Transient increased mitochondria-associated bax, dissipation of the mitochondrial membrane potential (delta(psi)m), and caspase-3-independent cleavage of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase are evident as early as 4 h after treatment of cells with tributyrin. These events are followed by the transient accumulation of mitochondrial cytochrome c in the cytosol and, finally, the generation and accumulation of cells with subdiploid DNA content.

The method has several advantages, most notably improved tolerability and enhanced antihypertensive efficacy. Long-term prospective studies are needed to confirm that such agents as calcium channel blockers, ACE inhibitors, and alpha 1 blockers reduce end-organ damage more effectively than do older antihypertensive drugs.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFWe have previously defined depressed mitochondrial function as a determinant in colon cancer risk and progression and established that metabolism of butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid generated during the fermentation of fiber by endogenous intestinal bacteria, induces mitochondrial function-dependent growth arrest and apoptosis of colonic carcinoma cells in vitro. Here, we dissect the relationships among mitochondrial function, growth arrest, and apoptosis, reporting that initiation and maintenance of butyrate-mediated p53-independent p21WAF1/Cip1 induction and subsequent G0/G1 arrest require an intact mitochondrial membrane potential (delta psi(mt)) and that the process of dissipation of the delta psi(mt) is then essential for initiation of a butyrate-induced apoptotic cascade. Thus, we hypothesize that mitochondria play a pivotal role in coordinating proliferation and apoptosis pathways, a coordination that must be tightly regulated in rapidly renewing tissues, such as the colonic mucosa.

The 37-residue AFP contains three 11-amino acid repeats that make a stereo-specific fit to the ice lattice along the <01-12> direction of the (20-21) and equivalent binding planes. The most abundant isoform (HPLC-6) of type I antifreeze protein (AFP1) in winter flounder is a 37-amino-acid-long, alanine-rich, alpha-helical peptide, containing four Thr spaced 11 amino acids apart. It is generally assumed that HPLC-6 binds ice through a hydrogen-bonding match between the Thr and neighboring Asx residues to oxygens atoms on the {2021} plane of the ice lattice. Objective: To assess factors associated with 30-day mortality in a population-based study of older adults with lower respiratory tract infection.
Methods: Identification of (1) a previously identified retrospective cohort of all residents of Rochester, Minn, aged 65 years or older who experienced a first episode of pneumonia or bronchitis during a calendar year and (2) the risk factors associated with 30-day mortality through review of complete inpatient and ambulatory medical records.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether phosphorylation of R-LC is the molecular basis for the increased force development rates (+dF/dtmax) observed in fatigued mouse extensor digitorum longus muscle (EDL) (stimulated in vitro at 25 degrees C). Parameters of twitch and tetanic force were obtained after the application of different-frequency conditioning stimuli (CS), which were used to vary R-LC phosphorylation and reduce peak tetanic force (Po).
