Wyburn-Mason disease (WMD) is a rare congenital phakomatosis known for its complex arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) predominantly affecting the brain and ocular structures. We present the case of a 19-year-old female with an unruptured Spetzler-Martin grade 5 left thalamic AVM, who initially exhibited progressive visual impairment and migraines. Following diagnosis, she was treated with trametinib, a MEK inhibitor; however, nine months later, she developed acute complications, including left monocular blindness and right hemisensory loss.

Background: The study aimed to gain insight into the experiences of patients with cancer and survivors regarding the integration of social needs assessment into their care, while also gathering perspectives from patient navigators on the barriers to obtaining and utilizing social needs information during cancer care, which taken together may influence cancer care policies. By comparing the perspectives of patients and navigators, the study sought to inform best practices for integrating, identifying, and addressing social needs to improve patient experiences and outcomes.

Methods: We conducted qualitative interviews and self-report surveys involving patients with cancer, providers, and patient navigators or care coordinators, seeking their insights and firsthand experiences related to health-related social needs in cancer care.

The relative conservation of the influenza hemagglutinin (HA) stem compared to that of the immunodominant HA head makes the HA stem an attractive target for broadly protective influenza vaccines. Here we report the first-in-human, dose-escalation, open-label trial (NCT04579250) evaluating an unadjuvanted group 2 stabilized stem ferritin nanoparticle vaccine based on the H10 A/Jiangxi-Donghu/346/2013 influenza HA, H10ssF, in healthy adults. A 65-year-old man had uneventful cataract surgery in the right eye with a toric diffractive intraocular lens (IOL) placed fully within the capsule bag. On postoperative day 1 and week 1, the IOL was well positioned and his eye was healing normally. The plan was to proceed with cataract surgery in the left eye in the near future.

Influenza A virus subtype H2N2, which caused the 1957 influenza pandemic, remains a global threat. A recent phase 1 clinical trial investigating a ferritin nanoparticle vaccine displaying H2 hemagglutinin (HA) in H2-naive and H2-exposed adults enabled us to perform comprehensive structural and biochemical characterization of immune memory on the breadth and diversity of the polyclonal serum antibody response elicited. We temporally map the epitopes targeted by serum antibodies after vaccine prime and boost, revealing that previous H2 exposure results in higher responses to the variable HA head domain.

Ebola virus disease (EVD) is a filoviral infection caused by virus species of the Ebolavirus genus including Zaire ebolavirus (EBOV) and Sudan ebolavirus (SUDV). We investigated the safety and immunogenicity of a heterologous prime-boost regimen involving a chimpanzee adenovirus 3 vectored Ebola vaccine [either monovalent (cAd3-EBOZ) or bivalent (cAd3-EBO)] prime followed by a recombinant modified vaccinia virus Ankara EBOV vaccine (MVA-EbolaZ) boost in two phase 1/1b randomized open-label clinical trials in healthy adults in the United States (US) and Uganda (UG). Trial US (NCT02408913) enrolled 140 participants, including 26 EVD vaccine-naïve and 114 cAd3-Ebola-experienced participants (April-November 2015).

Background: Sudan Ebola virus can cause severe viral disease, with an average case fatality rate of 54%. A recent outbreak of Sudan Ebola virus in Uganda caused 55 deaths among 164 confirmed cases in the second half of 2022. Although vaccines and therapeutics specific for Zaire Ebola virus have been approved for use during outbreak situations, Sudan Ebola virus is an antigenically distinct virus with no approved vaccines available.

Current yearly seasonal influenza vaccines primarily induce an antibody response directed against the immunodominant but continually diversifying hemagglutinin (HA) head region. These antibody responses provide protection against the vaccinating strain but little cross-protection against other influenza strains or subtypes. Purpose: The aim of the study was to describe the incidence, presentation, management, and outcomes of fungal infection after Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK).

Methods: Retrospective case series of culture-proven fungal infections after DMEK reported in the literature, directly by surgeons, and to the Eye Bank Association of America from January 1, 2011, to December 31, 2020.

Results: The domestic incidence of fungal infections, fungal keratitis, and fungal endophthalmitis after DMEK from 2011 to 2020 was 3.

Using a simulation based on a real, five-channel tunable LED lighting system, we show that Correlated Color Temperature (CCT) is not a reasonable predictor of the biological potency of light, whether characterized with CIE melanopic Equivalent Daylight Illuminance (mel-EDI), Equivalent Melanopic Lux (EML) (a scalar multiple of mel-EDI), or Circadian Stimulus (CS). At a photopic corneal illuminance of 300 lx and R ≥ 70, spectra can vary in CS from 17 to 41% across CCTs from 2500 to 6000 K, and up to 23% at a single CCT, due to the choice of spectrum alone. The CS range is largest, and notably discontinuous, at a CCT of 3500 K, the location of the inflection point of the CS model.

Illuminant-induced metameric mismatch is an important consideration in the specification of light sources for some architectural environments, yet there is currently no standardized performance measure. The goal of this work was to evaluate two recent research proposals: the metameric uncertainty index (R) and the metamer mismatching color rendering index (MMCRI). To compare the relative performance of these two measures, 100,000 spectral power distributions were generated with 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 Gaussian spectral components and spectral widths varying from 1 nm (monochromatic) to 100 nm.

Conserved epitopes on the influenza hemagglutinin (HA) stem are an attractive target for universal vaccine strategies as they elicit broadly neutralizing antibodies. Such antibody responses to stem-specific epitopes have been extensively characterized for HA subtypes H1 and H5 in humans. H2N2 influenza virus circulated 50 years ago and represents a pandemic threat due to the lack of widespread immunity, but, unlike H1 and H5, the H2 HA stem contains Phe45 predicted to sterically clash with HA stem-binding antibodies characterized to date.

The Muller muscle-conjunctival resection is a common technique used to treat blepharoptosis, but there is variability with the target surgical resection and expected postoperative outcomes measured by marginal reflex distance-1 (MRD1). A Levator-Mullerectomy is a novel surgical approach described by Morris et al to incorporate the levator palpebrae superioris in the same incision as the classic Muller muscle-conjunctival resection in the treatment of blepharoptosis.
