We evaluated the use of the Product Enhanced Reverse Transcriptase (PERT) assay as a means of detecting virus in retroviral vectors products pseudotyped with Gibbon Ape Leukemia Virus (GALV) and Vesicular Stomatitis Virus G (VSVG) envelopes. PERT provides greater standardization than the S+/L- assay which has been used extensively in virus detection. A challenge is that PERT will also detect residual retroviral vectors as vector particles contain reverse transcriptase.

Academic researchers, government agencies, industry groups, and individuals have produced forecasts at an unprecedented scale during the COVID-19 pandemic. To leverage these forecasts, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) partnered with an academic research lab at the University of Massachusetts Amherst to create the US COVID-19 Forecast Hub. Launched in April 2020, the Forecast Hub is a dataset with point and probabilistic forecasts of incident cases, incident hospitalizations, incident deaths, and cumulative deaths due to COVID-19 at county, state, and national, levels in the United States.

The abilities of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and focused ion beam (FIB) milling for obtaining high-resolution images from top surfaces, cross-sectional surfaces, and even in three dimensions, are becoming increasingly important for imaging and analyzing tooth structures such as enamel and dentin. FIB was originally developed for material research in the semiconductor industry. In 2011, the Veterans Health Administration mandated that Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Centers develop and implement a policy that allowed registered nurses (RNs) and advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) to pronounce the death of residents who die in Veterans Affairs community living centers, previously known as nursing homes, provided that there is a written do-not-resuscitate order in their medical record. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to determine the extent to which the implementation of the RN/APRN death pronouncement policy affected death pronouncement time for residents who die after 5 PM and before 7:30 AM, on weekends and holidays. This project is significant because the previous physician-only death pronouncement policy was found to cause unnecessary delays in death pronouncement.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder that results in defective cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein expression and function in various tissues. The leading cause of CF mortality and morbidity is the progressive destruction of the lungs due to recurrent infections and chronic inflammation. Following rostral spinal cord injury (SCI) in larval lampreys, injured descending brain neurons, particularly reticulospinal (RS) neurons, regenerate their axons, and locomotor behavior recovers in a few weeks. However, axonal regeneration of descending brain neurons is mostly limited to relatively short distances, but the mechanisms for incomplete axonal regeneration are unclear. First, lampreys with rostral SCI exhibited greater axonal regeneration of descending brain neurons, including RS neurons, as well as more rapid recovery of locomotor muscle activity right below the lesion site, compared with animals with caudal SCI.
