[Role of social medicine within the German Federal Employment Agency].

Social medicine deals with the interrelationships between health and society-as a cross-sectional subject within medicine and a bridging subject at the interfaces to other specialist disciplines. In the public and within the health system, social medicine still does not receive the attention it should be given, despite to its medical and socioeconomic importance. A significant proportion of social medicine specialists in Germany work as experts for social security providers.

Molecular organization of neuronal cell types and neuromodulatory systems in the zebrafish telencephalon.

The function of neuronal networks is determined not only by synaptic connectivity but also by neuromodulatory systems that broadcast information via distributed connections and volume transmission. To understand the molecular constraints that organize neuromodulatory signaling in the telencephalon of adult zebrafish, we used transcriptomics and additional approaches to delineate cell types, to determine their phylogenetic conservation, and to map the expression of marker genes at high granularity. The combinatorial expression of GPCRs and cell-type markers indicates that all neuronal cell types are subject to modulation by multiple monoaminergic systems and distinct combinations of neuropeptides.

Galaxy Training: A powerful framework for teaching!

There is an ongoing explosion of scientific datasets being generated, brought on by recent technological advances in many areas of the natural sciences. As a result, the life sciences have become increasingly computational in nature, and bioinformatics has taken on a central role in research studies. However, basic computational skills, data analysis, and stewardship are still rarely taught in life science educational programs, resulting in a skills gap in many of the researchers tasked with analysing these big datasets.

Expanding the Galaxy's reference data.

Summary: Properly and effectively managing reference datasets is an important task for many bioinformatics analyses. Refgenie is a reference asset management system that allows users to easily organize, retrieve and share such datasets. Here, we describe the integration of refgenie into the Galaxy platform.

A single-cell RNA-sequencing training and analysis suite using the Galaxy framework.

Background: The vast ecosystem of single-cell RNA-sequencing tools has until recently been plagued by an excess of diverging analysis strategies, inconsistent file formats, and compatibility issues between different software suites. The uptake of 10x Genomics datasets has begun to calm this diversity, and the bioinformatics community leans once more towards the large computing requirements and the statistically driven methods needed to process and understand these ever-growing datasets.

Results: Here we outline several Galaxy workflows and learning resources for single-cell RNA-sequencing, with the aim of providing a comprehensive analysis environment paired with a thorough user learning experience that bridges the knowledge gap between the computational methods and the underlying cell biology.

Dynamics of uS19 C-Terminal Tail during the Translation Elongation Cycle in Human Ribosomes.

Ribosomes undergo multiple conformational transitions during translation elongation. Here, we report the high-resolution cryoelectron microscopy (cryo-EM) structure of the human 80S ribosome in the post-decoding pre-translocation state (classical-PRE) at 3.3-Å resolution along with the rotated (hybrid-PRE) and the post-translocation states (POST).

What Happens After a Stop the Bleed Class? The Contrast Between Theory and Practice.

Objective: The Department of Homeland Security launched the Stop the Bleed initiative, a campaign intended to teach bystanders hemorrhage control strategies. Despite the program's popularity, little is known about actions taken by participants afterwards. We sought to determine how often participants acquired the equipment that is necessary in applying the skills taught.

Community-Driven Data Analysis Training for Biology.

The primary problem with the explosion of biomedical datasets is not the data, not computational resources, and not the required storage space, but the general lack of trained and skilled researchers to manipulate and analyze these data. Eliminating this problem requires development of comprehensive educational resources. Here we present a community-driven framework that enables modern, interactive teaching of data analytics in life sciences and facilitates the development of training materials.

SYK inhibition blocks proliferation and migration of glioma cells and modifies the tumor microenvironment.

Background: Glioblastoma (GBM) is one of the most aggressive human brain tumors, with a median survival of 15-18 months. There is a desperate need to find novel therapeutic targets. Various receptor protein kinases have been identified as potential targets; however, response rates in clinical studies have been somewhat disappointing.

[Conservative treatment of an aseptic abscess syndrome with splenic abscesses in Crohn's disease].

A 24-year old woman with a history of Crohn's disease developed bloody diarrhea and multiple abdominal abscesses, daily fever, leukocytosis, and elevated CRP several months after her immunosuppressive therapy with azathioprine was stopped. Recurrent abscess punctures did not detect any pathogenic germs and neither clinical nor serological response was achieved by administration of different antimicrobial therapies. Additionally, new splenic abscesses arose despite ongoing therapy.

Influence of change in surgical practice for benign thyroid disease on postsurgical outcome-Single-center experience in 1400 patients.

Purpose: To evaluate the rate of surgical complications during the change from subtotal resection to hemithyroidectomy or thyroidectomy over a period of 17 years.

Methods: All operations for benign goiter at our hospital were analyzed for the periods 1996-2002 (Group 1) and 2003-2012 (Group 2). The groups were compared for recurrent laryngeal nerve damage, hypocalcemia, and other surgical complications directly postoperatively.

Preliminary Results From the C-Pulse OPTIONS HF European Multicenter Post-Market Study.

BACKGROUND The C-Pulse System is an extra-aortic balloon counterpulsation device. It is used to treat patients with heart failure disease in NYHA functional class III or ambulatory class IV. MATERIAL AND METHODS We present preliminary site-reported 6-month data from 3 centers in Germany as part of the prospective observational post-market OPTIONS HF study.

Blunt aortic injury (BAI) after chest trauma is a potentially lethal condition. Rapid diagnosis is important to appropriately treat patients. The purpose of this study was to compare CT with intravenous contrast (CTI) to CT with angiography (CTA) in the initial evaluation of blunt chest trauma patients.

Bicycle trauma and alcohol intoxication.

Introduction: As bicycling has become more popular, admissions after bicycle trauma are on the rise. The impact of alcohol use on bicycle trauma has not been well studied. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of alcohol intoxication on injury burden following bicycle-related crashes.

Blunt aortic injury (BAI) after chest trauma is a potentially lethal condition that requires rapid diagnosis for appropriate treatment. We compared CT with IV contrast (CTI) with CT with angiography (CTA) during the initial phase of care at an urban Level I trauma center from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2013. Overall, 281 patients met inclusion criteria with 167 (59%) CTI and 114 (41%) CTA.

Dynamic expression of chromatin modifiers during developmental transitions in mouse preimplantation embryos.

During mouse preimplantation development, major changes in cell fate are accompanied by extensive alterations of gene expression programs. Embryos first transition from a maternal to zygotic program and subsequently specify the pluripotent and the trophectodermal cell lineages. These processes are regulated by key transcription factors, likely in cooperation with chromatin modifiers that control histone and DNA methylation.

Taurolidine induces epithelial-mesenchymal transition via up-regulation of the transcription factor Snail in human pancreatic cancer cell lines.

Purpose: The taurine derivative taurolidine (TRD) exerts anti-neoplastic effects in a variety of tumor models. On the other hand, TRD at low doses was shown to reduce cell-cell adhesion, a prerequisite for metastasis. The aim of this study was to elucidate the effects of low-dose TRD on pancreatic cancer.

Epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) seems to be regulated differently in endometriosis and the endometrium.

Purpose: Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) endows cells with migratory and invasive properties, a prerequisite for the establishment of endometriotic lesions. However, the role EMT might play in the pathophysiology of endometriosis is still unknown. Therefore, we examined five recognized markers for EMT in endometrium and endometriosis: E-cadherin, N-cadherin, Twist, Snail and Slug.

Confero: an integrated contrast data and gene set platform for computational analysis and biological interpretation of omics data.

Background: High-throughput omics technologies such as microarrays and next-generation sequencing (NGS) have become indispensable tools in biological research. Computational analysis and biological interpretation of omics data can pose significant challenges due to a number of factors, in particular the systems integration required to fully exploit and compare data from different studies and/or technology platforms. Non-invasive quantification of anti-angiogenic therapy by contrast-enhanced MRI in experimental pancreatic cancer.

Background: Currently, early changes of tumor vasculature after angiogenesis inhibition can only be evaluated by histopathology, a method not suitable in a clinical setting.

Purpose: To quantify effects of different angiogenesis inhibitors on the microvasculature of orthotopically implanted pancreatic cancers by contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in order to establish a non-invasive technique for monitoring antiangiogenic cancer treatment.

Material And Methods: DSL-6A/C1 pancreatic cancers were implanted in the pancreas of 109 Lewis rats.

Noncoding RNAs prevent spreading of a repressive histone mark.

Transcription of eukaryotic genomes is more widespread than was previously anticipated and results in the production of many non-protein-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) whose functional relevance is poorly understood. Here we demonstrate that ncRNAs can counteract the encroachment of heterochromatin into neighboring euchromatin. We have identified a long ncRNA (termed BORDERLINE) that prevents spreading of the HP1 protein Swi6 and histone H3 Lys9 methylation beyond the pericentromeric repeat region of Schizosaccharomyces pombe chromosome 1.

Dendritic cells from human mesenteric lymph nodes in inflammatory and non-inflammatory bowel diseases: subsets and function of plasmacytoid dendritic cells.

Plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDC) in mesenteric lymph nodes (MLN) may be important regulators of both inflammatory and non-inflammatory mucosal immune responses but human studies are rare. Here we compare pDC from human MLN and peripheral blood (PB) by phenotype and function. MLN from patients with or without inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) undergoing colon surgery and PB from patients with IBD and from controls were used to isolate mononuclear cells.
