Secondary lymphedema is caused by damage to the lymphatic system from surgery, cancer treatment, infection, trauma, or obesity. This damage induces stresses such as oxidative stress and hypoxia in lymphatic tissue, impairing the lymphatic system. In response to damage, vascular endothelial growth factor C (VEGF-C) levels increase to induce lymphangiogenesis.

Cyber competitions are usually team activities, where team performance not only depends on the members' abilities but also on team collaboration. This seems intuitive, especially given that team formation is a well-studied discipline in competitive sports and project management, but unfortunately, team performance and team formation strategies are rarely studied in the context of cybersecurity and cyber competitions. Since cyber competitions are becoming more prevalent and organized, this gap becomes an opportunity to formalize the study of team performance in the context of cyber competitions.

Background: Infection with enterotoxigenic (ETEC) gives rise to IgA antibodies against both the heat labile toxin (LT) and colonization factors (CFs), which are considered to synergistically protect against ETEC diarrhea. Since the development of ETEC-specific long lived plasma cells and memory B cells is likely to be dependent on T helper (Th) cells, we investigated if natural ETEC diarrhea elicits ETEC-specific Th cells and their relation to IgA responses.

Methods: Th cell subsets were analyzed in adult Bangladeshi patients hospitalized due to ETEC diarrhea by flow cytometric analysis of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) isolated from blood collected day 2, 7, 30 and 90 after hospitalization as well as in healthy controls.

The Utah array powers cutting-edge projects for restoration of neurological function, such as BrainGate, but the underlying electrode technology has itself advanced little in the last three decades. Here, advanced dual-side lithographic microfabrication processes is exploited to demonstrate a 1024-channel penetrating silicon microneedle array (SiMNA) that is scalable in its recording capabilities and cortical coverage and is suitable for clinical translation. The SiMNA is the first penetrating microneedle array with a flexible backing that affords compliancy to brain movements.

We report innovative scalable, vertical, ultra-sharp nanowire arrays that are individually addressable to enable long-term, native recordings of intracellular potentials. Stable amplitudes of intracellular potentials from 3D tissue-like networks of neurons and cardiomyocytes are obtained. Individual electrical addressability is necessary for high-fidelity intracellular electrophysiological recordings.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a preventable and treatable disease characterized by airflow limitation which is irreversible or partially reversible. COPD is associated with morbidity and increased mortality. The risk of death in patients with COPD is traditionally graded with the use of the forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV₁), but it correlates better with recently developed the BODE index- (B) Body mass index; (O) airflow obstruction measured by the forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV₁); (D) dyspnoea measured by the modified Medical Research Council (MRC) scale; and (E) exercise capacity measured by the 6 minute walk distance (6MWD).

Malaria is a global health burden, with (Pf) and (Pv) responsible for the majority of infections worldwide. Circumsporozoite protein (CSP) is the most abundant protein on the surface of sporozoites, and antibodies targeting the central repeat region of CSP can prevent parasite infection. Although much has been uncovered about the molecular basis of antibody recognition of the PfCSP repeats, data remains scarce for PvCSP.

Value-based health care has gained increasing prominence among funders and providers in efforts to improve the outcomes important to patients relative to the resources used to deliver care. In Australia, the value-based healthcare agenda has focused on reducing the use of 'low-value' interventions, redesigning models of care to improve integration between providers and increasing the use of patient-reported measures to drive improvement; all have occurred within existing payment structures. In this paper we describe options for value-based payment reform and highlight two challenges critical for success: attributing financial risk fairly and organisational structures.

Article Synopsis
  • Carboxylated nanocellulose superabsorbents (SAPs) can be created by modifying cellulose fibers with different cations, affecting their gel structure and properties.
  • Seven cations of varying valencies were tested for their influence on the gelation process and superabsorbent performance, showing that the type of counter-ion significantly impacts absorption capacity in deionised water.
  • The stability and performance of these gels depend on the cation's valency, with monovalent cations relying on physical interactions for gelation and divalent cations creating stronger ionic cross-links, leading to differences in absorption rates.

Despite ongoing advances in our understanding of local single-cellular and network-level activity of neuronal populations in the human brain, extraordinarily little is known about their "intermediate" microscale local circuit dynamics. Here, we utilized ultra-high-density microelectrode arrays and a rare opportunity to perform intracranial recordings across multiple cortical areas in human participants to discover three distinct classes of cortical activity that are not locked to ongoing natural brain rhythmic activity. The first included fast waveforms similar to extracellular single-unit activity.
