Hiccups can significantly reduce the quality of life of patients and can occur as a drug side effect. Previous reports have revealed sex-specific differences in the incidence of drug-induced hiccups. However, the pathogenesis of drug-induced hiccups remains unknown, and there is limited evidence on its treatment or prevention.

A 44-year-old man with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and nephrotic syndrome relapse was admitted to our intensive-care unit for respiratory failure. Despite receiving mechanical ventilation and immunomodulators, the patient experienced refractory hypoxemia, necessitating venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO) therapy. Due to a worsening renal function, continuous hemodiafiltration was initiated.

Researchers characterize the mechanical properties of ABA triblock copolymers by structures such as chain conformation. During elongation, bridge chains are stretched and act as a stress chain. Some loop chains also act as a stress chain because of the transmission of stress through an entanglement of loop chains.

Background: Arterial calcification is an important factor in determining the prognosis of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Few studies on aortic calcification have involved radial artery calcification (RAC). This study aimed to analyze risk factors for RAC in patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) and investigate the relationship between subsequent cardiovascular events (CVE) and vascular access trouble (VAT).

In this study, we used the large number of cases in the FDA adverse-event reporting system (FAERS) database to investigate risk factors for drug-induced hiccups and to explore the relationship between hiccups and gender. From 11,810,863 adverse drug reactions reported between the first quarter of 2004 and the first quarter of 2020, we extracted only those in which side effects occurred between the beginning and end of drug administration. Our sample included 1454 adverse reactions for hiccups, with 1159 involving males and 257 involving females (the gender in 38 reports was unknown).

Zebrafish caudal fin rays are used as a model system for regeneration because of their high regenerative ability, but studies on the regeneration polarity of the fin ray are limited. To investigate this regeneration polarity, we made a hole to excise part of the fin ray and analyzed the regeneration process. We confirmed that the fin rays always regenerated from the proximal margin toward the distal margin, as previously reported; however, regeneration-related genes were expressed at both the proximal and distal edges of the hole in the early stage of regeneration, suggesting that the regenerative response also occurs at the distal edge.

Ewing sarcoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumor (ES/PNET) of the kidney is extremely rare, and is usually diagnosed after nephrectomy without neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Although ifosfamide and etoposide improve survival to a great extent in ES/PNET, the use of nephrotoxic agent, particularly ifosfamide, is a concern after nephrectomy. We describe the case of a 14-year-old female patient with abdominal mass who was diagnosed with ES/PNET of the right kidney after nephrectomy.

We report the first case of Corynebacterium propinquum keratitis in the compromised cornea of a diabetic patient wearing therapeutic contact lenses. The strain was identified to the species level based on sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene and RNA polymerase β-subunit-encoding gene (rpoB). Ophthalmologists should be aware of nondiphtherial corynebacterial infection of compromised corneas.

Unlabelled: GATA1 mutations are found almost exclusively in children with myeloid proliferations related to Down syndrome (DS). Here, we report two phenotypically and cytogenetically normal children with acute megakaryoblastic leukemia (AMKL) whose blasts had both acquired trisomy 21 and GATA1 mutation. Patient 1 was diagnosed with transient abnormal myelopoiesis in the neonatal period.

Background: Evidence suggests that intestinal microbiota play an important role in the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis (AD) through induction of immunosuppression and immune tolerance; however, the exact underlying mechanism is unclear. Few studies to date have examined the effects of probiotics on adult-type AD.

Objective: To examine the effects of the probiotic Bifidobacterium animalis subsp lactis LKM512 on adult-type AD and the expression of metabolites that are known to be influenced by gut microbiota in fecal samples.

A defective platelet glycoprotein (GP) Ib/IX/V complex [von Willebrand factor (VWF) receptor] results in Bernard-Soulier syndrome (BSS), which is characterized by macrothrombocytopenia and impaired ristocetin- and thrombin-induced platelet aggregation. We found 2 independent BSS-variant families: Case I [compound heterozygous mutations, p.Glu331X and a frame shift by a deletion at c.

A 5-year-old girl developed cardiopulmonary arrest after crying. From the electrocardiogram and echocardiography, a left ventricular noncompaction (LVNC) with long QT syndrome (LQT) was suspected as the cause of the cardiopulmonary arrest, and treatment with a β-blocker and a calcium antagonist was then begun. A genetic screening of LQT-related genes revealed a previously reported heterozygous KCNQ1 mutation.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is known to cause several ocular involvements, but exudative retinal detachment is a rare complication. We describe a case report of a 4-year-old boy with T cell ALL who developed bilateral exudative retinal detachment caused by leukemic infiltration in the retinas after achieving hematological remission. Intravenous steroid pulse therapy and local irradiation reversed the condition, but it recurred concurrently with disease progression after a second relapse in the bone marrow.

Patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), who develop antiasparaginase antibodies without clinical allergic reactions ("silent inactivation") during L: -asparaginase (L: -Asp) treatment, have poor outcomes. Ammonia is produced by hydrolysis of asparagine by L: -Asp. We postulated that plasma ammonia level might reflect the biological activity of L: -Asp.

Testicular relapse has an impact on the prognosis of boys with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Because isolated testicular relapse often precedes hematological relapse, systemic therapy is required in addition to local therapy. However, a rationale for the use of a combination of systemic chemotherapy and local therapy is unclear.
