Analysis of Factors Associated with Hiccups Using the FAERS Database.

In this study, we used the large number of cases in the FDA adverse-event reporting system (FAERS) database to investigate risk factors for drug-induced hiccups and to explore the relationship between hiccups and gender. From 11,810,863 adverse drug reactions reported between the first quarter of 2004 and the first quarter of 2020, we extracted only those in which side effects occurred between the beginning and end of drug administration. Our sample included 1454 adverse reactions for hiccups, with 1159 involving males and 257 involving females (the gender in 38 reports was unknown).

Regenerative Polarity of the Fin Ray in Zebrafish Caudal Fin and Related Tissue Formation on the Cut Surface.

Zebrafish caudal fin rays are used as a model system for regeneration because of their high regenerative ability, but studies on the regeneration polarity of the fin ray are limited. To investigate this regeneration polarity, we made a hole to excise part of the fin ray and analyzed the regeneration process. We confirmed that the fin rays always regenerated from the proximal margin toward the distal margin, as previously reported; however, regeneration-related genes were expressed at both the proximal and distal edges of the hole in the early stage of regeneration, suggesting that the regenerative response also occurs at the distal edge.

Although ifosfamide and etoposide improve survival to a great extent in ES/PNET, the use of nephrotoxic agent, particularly ifosfamide, is a concern after nephrectomy. We describe the case of a 14-year-old female patient with abdominal mass who was diagnosed with ES/PNET of the right kidney after nephrectomy.

Contact Lens-Related Infectious Keratitis with White Plaque Formation Caused by Corynebacterium propinquum.

We report the first case of Corynebacterium propinquum keratitis in the compromised cornea of a diabetic patient wearing therapeutic contact lenses. The strain was identified to the species level based on sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene and RNA polymerase β-subunit-encoding gene (rpoB). Ophthalmologists should be aware of nondiphtherial corynebacterial infection of compromised corneas.

Acute megakaryoblastic leukemia with acquired trisomy 21 and GATA1 mutations in phenotypically normal children.

Unlabelled: GATA1 mutations are found almost exclusively in children with myeloid proliferations related to Down syndrome (DS). Here, we report two phenotypically and cytogenetically normal children with acute megakaryoblastic leukemia (AMKL) whose blasts had both acquired trisomy 21 and GATA1 mutation. Patient 1 was diagnosed with transient abnormal myelopoiesis in the neonatal period.

Antipruritic effects of the probiotic strain LKM512 in adults with atopic dermatitis.

Background: Evidence suggests that intestinal microbiota play an important role in the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis (AD) through induction of immunosuppression and immune tolerance; however, the exact underlying mechanism is unclear. Few studies to date have examined the effects of probiotics on adult-type AD.

Objective: To examine the effects of the probiotic Bifidobacterium animalis subsp lactis LKM512 on adult-type AD and the expression of metabolites that are known to be influenced by gut microbiota in fecal samples.

Factors influencing timing of neonatal discharge in Japan: retrospective study.

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the birth and discharge dates of neonates and analyze their distribution over days of the week and the old lunar calendar.

Methods: A retrospective study of the neonates discharged in the years 1990, 2000, 2005, and 2010 was conducted in a general hospital in Tokyo, Japan. Data are represented as odds ratios (OR) of the total number of discharges per day divided by the expected number of days per year, for each day of the week as well as each 6 day cycle of the lunar calendar.

Temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampal sclerosis in acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Of 71 acute lymphoblastic leukemia survivors at our hospital over the past 10 years, 2 children developed mesial temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampal sclerosis (MTLE-HS). A left ventricular noncompaction in a patient with long QT syndrome caused by a KCNQ1 mutation: a case report.

A 5-year-old girl developed cardiopulmonary arrest after crying. From the electrocardiogram and echocardiography, a left ventricular noncompaction (LVNC) with long QT syndrome (LQT) was suspected as the cause of the cardiopulmonary arrest, and treatment with a β-blocker and a calcium antagonist was then begun. A genetic screening of LQT-related genes revealed a previously reported heterozygous KCNQ1 mutation.

In this study, we investigated the influence of treatment on intellectual development in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and brain tumor patients undergoing CNS-directed treatments.

Methods: Among patients treated in the Department of Pediatrics, St Luke's International Hospital between April 2000 and March 2009, the subjects were 38 patients with ALL or brain tumors who underwent regular Wechsler intelligence tests.

Bullous exudative retinal detachment due to infiltration of leukemic cells in a child with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is known to cause several ocular involvements, but exudative retinal detachment is a rare complication. We describe a case report of a 4-year-old boy with T cell ALL who developed bilateral exudative retinal detachment caused by leukemic infiltration in the retinas after achieving hematological remission.
