Hiccups can significantly reduce the quality of life of patients and can occur as a drug side effect. Previous reports have revealed sex-specific differences in the incidence of drug-induced hiccups. However, the pathogenesis of drug-induced hiccups remains unknown, and there is limited evidence on its treatment or prevention.

Despite receiving mechanical ventilation and immunomodulators, the patient experienced refractory hypoxemia, necessitating venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO) therapy. Due to a worsening renal function, continuous hemodiafiltration was initiated.

During elongation, bridge chains are stretched and act as a stress chain. Some loop chains also act as a stress chain because of the transmission of stress through an entanglement of loop chains.

Few studies on aortic calcification have involved radial artery calcification (RAC). This study aimed to analyze risk factors for RAC in patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) and investigate the relationship between subsequent cardiovascular events (CVE) and vascular access trouble (VAT).

In this study, we used the large number of cases in the FDA adverse-event reporting system (FAERS) database to investigate risk factors for drug-induced hiccups and to explore the relationship between hiccups and gender. From 11,810,863 adverse drug reactions reported between the first quarter of 2004 and the first quarter of 2020, we extracted only those in which side effects occurred between the beginning and end of drug administration. Our sample included 1454 adverse reactions for hiccups, with 1159 involving males and 257 involving females (the gender in 38 reports was unknown).

To investigate this regeneration polarity, we made a hole to excise part of the fin ray and analyzed the regeneration process. We confirmed that the fin rays always regenerated from the proximal margin toward the distal margin, as previously reported; however, regeneration-related genes were expressed at both the proximal and distal edges of the hole in the early stage of regeneration, suggesting that the regenerative response also occurs at the distal edge.

Purpose: Medication is an important risk factor for delirium; however, the association between delirium and prehospitalization medication is unclear. We investigated the association between prestroke medication and poststroke delirium.
Materials And Methods: All patients hospitalized in the stroke care unit from September 2011 to September 2012 were selected, and their delirium symptoms, patient information, and pre- and poststroke medications were analyzed.
Hiccups are occasionally experienced by most individuals. Although hiccups are not life-threatening, they may lead to a decline in quality of life. Previous studies showed that hiccups may occur as an adverse effect of certain medicines during chemotherapy.

Although ifosfamide and etoposide improve survival to a great extent in ES/PNET, the use of nephrotoxic agent, particularly ifosfamide, is a concern after nephrectomy. We describe the case of a 14-year-old female patient with abdominal mass who was diagnosed with ES/PNET of the right kidney after nephrectomy.

The strain was identified to the species level based on sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene and RNA polymerase β-subunit-encoding gene (rpoB). Ophthalmologists should be aware of nondiphtherial corynebacterial infection of compromised corneas.

Here, we report two phenotypically and cytogenetically normal children with acute megakaryoblastic leukemia (AMKL) whose blasts had both acquired trisomy 21 and GATA1 mutation. Patient 1 was diagnosed with transient abnormal myelopoiesis in the neonatal period.

Background: Evidence suggests that intestinal microbiota play an important role in the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis (AD) through induction of immunosuppression and immune tolerance; however, the exact underlying mechanism is unclear. Few studies to date have examined the effects of probiotics on adult-type AD.
Objective: To examine the effects of the probiotic Bifidobacterium animalis subsp lactis LKM512 on adult-type AD and the expression of metabolites that are known to be influenced by gut microbiota in fecal samples.
Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the birth and discharge dates of neonates and analyze their distribution over days of the week and the old lunar calendar.
Methods: A retrospective study of the neonates discharged in the years 1990, 2000, 2005, and 2010 was conducted in a general hospital in Tokyo, Japan. Data are represented as odds ratios (OR) of the total number of discharges per day divided by the expected number of days per year, for each day of the week as well as each 6 day cycle of the lunar calendar.
Of 71 acute lymphoblastic leukemia survivors at our hospital over the past 10 years, 2 children developed mesial temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampal sclerosis (MTLE-HS). This is the first report to describe the clinical course of MTLE-HS observed longitudinally by EEG and MRI. Patient 1 experienced a seizure during chemotherapy involving intrathecal methotrexate.

From the electrocardiogram and echocardiography, a left ventricular noncompaction (LVNC) with long QT syndrome (LQT) was suspected as the cause of the cardiopulmonary arrest, and treatment with a β-blocker and a calcium antagonist was then begun. A genetic screening of LQT-related genes revealed a previously reported heterozygous KCNQ1 mutation.

In this study, we investigated the influence of treatment on intellectual development in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and brain tumor patients undergoing CNS-directed treatments.
Methods: Among patients treated in the Department of Pediatrics, St Luke's International Hospital between April 2000 and March 2009, the subjects were 38 patients with ALL or brain tumors who underwent regular Wechsler intelligence tests.
Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is known to cause several ocular involvements, but exudative retinal detachment is a rare complication. We describe a case report of a 4-year-old boy with T cell ALL who developed bilateral exudative retinal detachment caused by leukemic infiltration in the retinas after achieving hematological remission. Intravenous steroid pulse therapy and local irradiation reversed the condition, but it recurred concurrently with disease progression after a second relapse in the bone marrow.
