Studies in humans and rodents show exercise in pregnancy can modulate maternal blood pressure, vascular volume, and placental efficiency, but whether exercise affects early uteroplacental vascular adaptations is unknown. To investigate this, CBA/J female mice mated with BALB/c males to generate healthy uncomplicated pregnancies (BALB/c-mated) or mated with DBA/2J males to generate abortion-prone pregnancies (DBA/2J-mated), were subjected to treadmill exercise (5 days/week, 10 m/min, 30 min/day for 6 weeks before and throughout pregnancy), or remained sedentary. In uncomplicated pregnancies, exercise caused symmetric fetal growth restriction in fetuses evidenced by reductions in fetal weight, crown-to-rump length, abdominal girth and biparietal diameter.

A study in the Vitamin D in Pregnancy (VIP) cohort reported sexually dimorphic effects of maternal 25-hydroxyvitamin-D (25(OH)D) and offspring fracture profiles at 10 years of age. We, therefore, aimed to determine associations between maternal 25(OH)D status and offspring fracture risk at 16 years of age in this cohort.

Escin is a mixture of over 30 glycosylated triterpenoid (saponin) structures, extracted from the dried fruit of horse chestnuts. Escin is currently used as an anti-inflammatory, and has potential applications in the treatment of arthritis and cancer. Hypothesis: Saponins are a class of plant derived surfactants which are widely used in food related foams and emulsions, aerated drinks, and in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. As a potential biosourced and renewable ingredient in a wider range of surfactant based formulations their potential is intimately associated with their mixing with synthetic surfactants. As such the nature of the mixed saponin-surfactant self-assembly is an important characteristic to investigate and understand.

Background: Caregivers often use the internet to access information related to stroke care to improve preparedness, thereby reducing uncertainty and enhancing the quality of care.

Method: Social media communities used by caregivers of people affected by stroke were identified using popular keywords searched for using Google. Communities were filtered based on their ability to provide support to caregivers.

Maternal nutritional intake, such as folate and folic acid supplementation, during pregnancy may affect offspring bone health during childhood. We aimed to determine the associations between maternal dietary and supplementary folate intake and offspring bone health measures, including fracture risk. Data were obtained from 160 of 475 mother-child pairs who had returned for the 11-year follow up of the Vitamin D in Pregnancy Study, an observational cohort study.
