A large-scale, double-stream gas puff target has been illuminated by sub-kJ, near-infrared (NIR) focused laser pulses at the PALS facility (Prague Asterix Laser System) to produce high-energy pulses of soft X rays from hot, dense plasma. The double-puff arrangement ensures high gas density and conversion efficiency from NIR to X rays approaching that typical for solid targets. In addition, its major advantage over solid targets is that it is free of debris and has substantially suppressed charged-particle emission.

The p53 tumor suppressor is a sequence-specific pleiotropic transcription factor that coordinates cellular responses to DNA damage and stress, initiating cell-cycle arrest or triggering apoptosis. Although the human p53 binding site sequence (or response element [RE]) is well characterized, some genes have consensus-poor REs that are nevertheless both necessary and sufficient for transactivation by p53. Introduction: The aim of this investigation was to provide evidence that leukocyte depleted whole blood meets the requirements for transfusion of the European Council and thus may be an alternative to leukocyte and plasma depleted packed red blood cells in autologous blood predeposit for patients undergoing elective surgery programs.

The rarely described gastric micropneumatosis is caused by accumulating air in the mucus membrane. It may associate mainly with Helicobacter pylori positive atrophic gastritis or with pneumatosis due to gas producing bacteria or non-infectious causes. In our case the disorder was diagnosed in a 69 years old patient, taking clopidogrel, living in a nursing home, with history of hypertension, general arteriosclerosis, cerebral infarction, who was admitted to our department because of melaena and hematemesis.

Mu opioid receptors are critical for heroin dependence, and A118G SNP of the mu opioid receptor gene (OPRM1) has been linked with heroin abuse. In our population of European Caucasians (n = 118), approximately 90% of 118G allelic carriers were heroin users. Postmortem brain analyses showed the OPRM1 genotype associated with transcription, translation, and processing of the human striatal opioid neuropeptide system.

The Oxytricha nova telemere binding protein alpha subunit binds single strand DNA and participates in a nucleoprotein complex that protects the very ends of chromosomes. To understand how the N-terminal, DNA binding domain of alpha interacts with DNA we measured the stoichiometry, enthalpy (DeltaH), entropy (DeltaS), and dissociation constant (K(D-DNA)) for binding telomere DNA fragments at different temperatures and salt concentrations using native gel electrophoresis and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). About 85% of the total free energy of binding corresponded with non-electrostatic interactions for all DNAs.

The in vitro effect of stone-wool has been studied in primary cultures of pulmonary alveolar macrophages (AM) and type II pneumocytes (T2) by morphological, biochemical and immunological methods. UICC crocidolite was applied as a positive control. Although stone-wool brought about frustrated phagocytosis, it did not induce serious membrane damage, whereas crocidolite gave rise to very severe membrane alterations.

In this study, cardiovascular (CV) response to a standard laboratory challenge was compared to 24-hr noninvasive monitoring of heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP) in 30 healthy middle-aged train drivers. Laboratory stress test consisted of the orthostatic test, the cold pressor test, the Valsalva maneuver, the Stroop test, and the numerical square. In addition, the participants completed an extensive questionnaire on their health state and family health history, lifestyle, job stress, social and family support, personality characteristics, and health risk behaviors.

Alpha and beta protein subunits of the telomere end binding protein from Oxytricha nova (OnTEBP) combine with telomere single strand DNA to form a protective cap at the ends of chromosomes. We tested how protein-protein interactions seen in the co-crystal structure relate to DNA binding through use of fusion proteins engineered as different combinations of domains and subunits derived from OnTEBP.
