View Article and Find Full Text PDFOur purpose was to compare HDL subpopulations, as determined by nondenaturing two-dimensional gel electrophoresis followed by immunoblotting for apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I), apoA-II, apoA-IV, apoCs, and apoE in heterozygous, compound heterozygous, and homozygous subjects for cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) deficiency and controls. Heterozygotes, compound heterozygotes, and homozygotes had CETP masses that were 30, 63, and more than 90% lower and HDL-cholesterol values that were 64, 168, and 203% higher than those in controls, respectively. Heterozygotes had approximately 50% lower pre-beta-1 and more than 2-fold higher levels of alpha-1 and pre-alpha-1 particles than controls.

The purposes of this descriptive, correlational study were to measure pain, fatigue, and functional limitations affecting the "at home" recovery process for ambulatory gynecologic laparoscopic surgery and to explore the relationships between these variables and the return to normal activities. Subjects (N = 91) recorded daily ratings of pain, fatigue, and function on a Home Recovery Log for 6 days postoperatively. The findings indicate that 95% of subjects resumed basic self-care activities such as dressing, bathing, and eating by postoperative day (POD) 3; however, less than 40% of subjects were able to perform other role functions such as shopping, laundry, and work outside of the home.

In the present study, the pharmacological effects of etiprednol dicloacetate (BNP-166; ethyl-17alpha-dichloroacetoxy-11beta-hydroxyandrosta-1,4-diene-3-one-17beta-carboxylate), a new soft steroid, intended to use for the treatment of asthma, were investigated in an animal model of allergen sensitized and challenged Brown Norway rats using local treatment. The examinations involved the determination of the effect of the compound on the extent of allergen induced broncho-alveolar fluid and lung tissue eosinophilia, goblet cell hyperplasia and mucus production, perivascular edema formation, and airways hyperresponsiveness. The activity of etiprednol dicloacetate was compared with that of budesonide.

Objective: We examined the effects of simvastatin-niacin and antioxidant vitamins on changes in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) subpopulations and alterations in coronary artery stenosis, as assessed by angiography.

Background: Atrial septal aneurysm is frequently associated with patent foramen ovale (PFO) and atrial septal defects (ASD). Moreover, a relationship between atrial septal aneurysm and embolic cerebrovascular events has been suggested. The aims of this study were to analyze morphological and functional characteristics of atrial septal aneurysm in PFO and ASD patients and to assess the feasibility and efficacy of different devices for transcatheter closure and the influence of atrial septal aneurysm.

Paradoxical embolism through a patent foramen ovale (PFO) has been recognized as a potential cause of transient ischemia attack (TIA) and stroke especially in younger patients. The therapeutic options are medical treatment (antiaggregation or anticoagulation) with an annual recurrence rate of 3% to 4% for stroke or TIA, surgical PFO closure, or catheter closure. Randomized studies are ongoing; however, the results will not be available soon.
