The present article describes the cognitive and emotional aspects of human thigmotaxis (a wall-following spatial strategy) during exploration of virtual and physical spaces. The authors assessed 106 participants with spatial and nonspatial performance-based learning-memory tasks and with fear and anxiety questionnaires. The results demonstrate that thigmotaxis plays a distinct role at different phases of spatial learning.

Objectives: Bovine and human blood has been widely used for in vitro hemolysis testing to evaluate centrifugal cardiac assist pumps. However, results from such tests are complicated by variations in the susceptibility of individual red blood cells to shear. The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of microcapsule suspension as an alternative to bovine or human blood for hemolysis testing.

Periodic heterogeneity is introduced in experiments with thin solution layers where downward propagating planar autocatalytic fronts are hydrodynamically unstable and cellular patterns develop. The evolution of fingers is greatly affected by the spatial heterogeneity when the wave number associated with it falls in the vicinity of the most unstable mode of the reference system with uniform thickness. The imposed heterogeneity will drive the instability by amplifying the modes with the matching wave numbers as indicated by the experimentally constructed dispersion curves.

This paper introduces a novel molecular description--topological (2D) fuzzy pharmacophore triplets, 2D-FPT--using the number of interposed bonds as the measure of separation between the atoms representing pharmacophore types (hydrophobic, aromatic, hydrogen-bond donor and acceptor, cation, and anion). 2D-FPT features three key improvements with respect to the state-of-the-art pharmacophore fingerprints: (1) The first key novelty is fuzzy mapping of molecular triplets onto the basis set of pharmacophore triplets: unlike in the binary scheme where an atom triplet is set to highlight the bit of a single, best-matching basis triplet, the herein-defined fuzzy approach allows for gradual mapping of each atom triplet onto several related basis triplets, thus minimizing binary classification artifacts. (2) The second innovation is proteolytic equilibrium dependence, by explicitly considering all of the conjugated acids and bases (microspecies).

Three-dimensional stability of stationary reaction balls is investigated in a system consisting of an autocatalysis accompanied by a slow decay of the autocatalyst. Radially stable stationary spherical structures become unstable to three-dimensional perturbations at small decay rate when the radius of the reaction ball is sufficiently large and the reactant diffuses faster than the autocatalyst. A thorough linear stability analysis and simulations in three spatial dimensions are carried out in the simplest system sustaining stationary reaction balls.

A femtosecond optical frequency comb and continuous-wave pulse-amplified laser were used to measure 12 transition frequencies of antiprotonic helium to fractional precisions of (9-16)x10(-9). One of these is between two states having microsecond-scale lifetimes hitherto unaccessible to our precision laser spectroscopy method. Comparisons with three-body QED calculations yielded an antiproton-to-electron mass ratio of Mp/me=1836.

Two subtractive cDNA libraries were developed to study genes associated with bud dormancy (reverse library) and initiation of shoot growth (forward library) in leafy spurge. To identify unique sequences represented in each library, 15744 clones were screened to reduce the level of redundancy within both libraries. A total of 516 unique sequences were obtained from 2304 minimally redundant clones.

We have studied the lateral stability of planar reaction-diffusion fronts in an autocatalytic reaction between aqueous ions in an externally imposed electric field. In our experiments, migration drives the pattern formation leading to cellular structures where the sufficiently greater migrational flux of the reactant with respect to that of the autocatalyst is the driving force. The difference in electric field strength between the two sides of the thin reaction front results from the significant increase in conductivity during the reaction.

Despite the increasing use of left ventricular assist devices for patients with end-stage congestive heart failure, no implantable, centrifugal right ventricular assist devices (RVADs) are available for those patients with significant right ventricular failure. The DexAide RVAD was developed to provide an implantable RVAD option to surgeons. The aim of this study was to evaluate pump performance in an acute in vivo model.

The purpose of this program is to design, develop, and clinically evaluate a new, implantable right ventricular assist device (RVAD) that can be used as a component of an implantable biventricular assist device for patients with severe biventricular heart failure. The initial phase of this program resulted in a prototype RVAD, named DexAide, a modified version of the CorAide left ventricular assist device. In vitro testing was performed in a stand-alone circuit and in a true RVAD mode to evaluate pump performance.

A QSAR model accounting for "average" G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) binding was built from a large set of experimental standardized binding data (1939 compounds systematically tested over 40 different GPCRs) and applied to the design of a library of "GPCR-predicted" compounds. Three hundred and sixty of these compounds were randomly selected and tested in 21 GPCR binding assays. Positives were defined by their ability to inhibit by more than 70% the binding of reference compounds at 10 microM.

Cold, two-body antiprotonic helium ions p 4He2+ and p 3He2+ with 100-ns-scale lifetimes, occupying circular states with the quantum numbers ni=28-32 and li=ni-1 have been observed. They were produced by cooling three-body antiprotonic helium atoms in an ultra-low-density helium target at temperature T approximately 10 K by atomic collisions, and then removing their electrons by inducing a laser transition to an autoionizing state. The lifetimes of p 3He2+ against annihilation induced by collisions were shorter than those of p 4He2+, and decreased for larger-ni states.

We have used a radio frequency quadrupole decelerator to decelerate antiprotons emerging from the CERN Antiproton Decelerator from MeV- to keV-scale energy, and collected five decelerated pulses in a multiring trap. Some 5 x 10(6) antiprotons were stacked in this way. Cooling of the trapped antiprotons by a simultaneously trapped electron plasma was studied nondestructively via shifts in plasma mode frequencies.

Density fingering of the chlorite-tetrathionate reaction has been studied experimentally in a Hele-Shaw cell. The initially emerging cellular structure transforms into a single cell with constant--asymmetric and symmetric--shape in narrow reaction vessels. The interactions of fingers in wider Hele-Shaw cells lead to the coarsening of the patterns, however, splitting of fingers is observed as well.

Cassava (Manihot esculenta) is a major food staple for nearly 600 million people in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Major losses in yield result from biotic and abiotic stresses that include diseases such as Cassava Mosaic Disease (CMD) and Cassava Bacterial Blight (CBB), drought, and acid soils. Additional losses also occur from deterioration during the post-harvest storage of roots.

This paper reviews the main efforts undertaken up to date in order to understand, rationalize and apply the similarity principle (similar compounds=>similar properties) as a computational tool in modern drug discovery. The best suited mathematical expression of this classical working hypothesis of medicinal chemistry needs to be carefully chosen (out of the virtually infinite possible implementations in terms of molecular descriptors and molecular similarity metrics), in order to achieve an optimal validation of the hypothesis that molecules that are neighbors in the Structural Space will also display similar properties. This overview will show why no single "absolute" measure of molecular similarity can be conceived, and why molecular similarity scores should be considered tunable tools that need to be adapted to each problem to solve.

Density fingering of exothermic autocatalytic fronts in vertically oriented porous media and Hele-Shaw cells is studied theoretically for chemical reactions where the solutal and thermal contribution to density changes have opposite signs. The competition between these two effects leads to thermal plumes for ascending fronts. The descending fronts behave strikingly differently as they can feature, for some values of the parameters, fingers of constant amplitude and wavelength.

Dormancy regulation in vegetative buds is a complex process necessary for plant survival, development and architecture. Our understanding of and ability to manipulate these processes are crucial for increasing the yield and availability of much of the world's food. In many cases, release of dormancy results in increased cell division and changes in developmental programs.
