Metabolic variations in normal and fibrotic human laryngotracheal-derived fibroblasts: A Warburg-like effect.

Objectives/hypothesis: Laryngotracheal stenosis (LTS) is a chronic fibrotic disease characterized by fibroblast proliferation, collagen deposition, and matrix remodeling in the lamina propria of the larynx and/or trachea. Current medical therapies are limited by a poor understanding of the effector cell's (fibroblasts) cellular biology and metabolism. The purpose of this study was to compare cellular proliferation, function, and metabolism between normal and LTS-derived fibroblasts in vitro.

The genetic architecture of freezing tolerance varies across the range of Arabidopsis thaliana.

The capacity to tolerate freezing temperatures limits the geographical distribution of many plants, including several species of agricultural importance. However, the genes involved in freezing tolerance remain largely unknown. Here, we describe the variation in constitutive freezing tolerance that occurs among worldwide accessions of Arabidopsis thaliana.

The utility of cellient cell blocks in low-cellularity thyroid fine needle aspiration biopsies.

Background: Low cellularity can be problematic in thyroid fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsies. The Cellient cell block (CB) system has been reported to improve cell recovery compared to traditional methods. Therefore, we studied the utility of Cellient CBs in the evaluation of thyroid FNAs, with an emphasis on low-cellularity specimens.

Ancient crops provide first archaeological signature of the westward Austronesian expansion.

The Austronesian settlement of the remote island of Madagascar remains one of the great puzzles of Indo-Pacific prehistory. Although linguistic, ethnographic, and genetic evidence points clearly to a colonization of Madagascar by Austronesian language-speaking people from Island Southeast Asia, decades of archaeological research have failed to locate evidence for a Southeast Asian signature in the island's early material record. Here, we present new archaeobotanical data that show that Southeast Asian settlers brought Asian crops with them when they settled in Africa.

Vaccinia vaccine-based immunotherapy arrests and reverses established pulmonary fibrosis.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a fatal disease without any cure. Both human disease and animal models demonstrate dysregulated wound healing and unregulated fibrogenesis in a background of low-grade chronic T lymphocyte infiltration. Tissue-resident memory T cells (Trm) are emerging as important regulators of the immune microenvironment in response to pathogens, and we hypothesized that they might play a role in regulating the unremitting inflammation that promotes lung fibrosis.

Expression Profiling of Developing Zebrafish Retinal Cells.

During retinal development, a variety of different types of neurons are produced. Understanding how each of these types of retinal nerve cells is generated is important from a developmental biology perspective. It is equally important if one is interested in how to regenerate cells after an injury or a disease.

Identification of Diabetic Retinopathy and Ungradable Image Rate with Ultrawide Field Imaging in a National Teleophthalmology Program.

Purpose: To compare diabetic retinopathy (DR) identification and ungradable image rates between nonmydriatic ultrawide field (UWF) imaging and nonmydriatic multifield fundus photography (NMFP) in a large multistate population-based DR teleophthalmology program.

Design: Multiple-site, nonrandomized, consecutive, cross-sectional, retrospective, uncontrolled imaging device evaluation.

Participants: Thirty-five thousand fifty-two eyes (17 526 patients) imaged using NMFP and 16 218 eyes (8109 patients) imaged using UWF imaging.

Comparison of outcomes for patients with lepidic pulmonary adenocarcinoma defined by 2 staging systems: A North American experience.

Objective: Application of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer/American Thoracic Society/European Respiratory Society (IASLC/ATS/ERS) classification of lepidic adenocarcinomas in conjunction with American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging has been challenging. We aimed to compare IASLC/ATS/ERS and AJCC classifications, to determine if they could be integrated as a single staging system.

Methods: We reviewed patients from 2001-2013 who had AJCC stage I lepidic adenocarcinomas, and categorized them according to IASLC/ATS/ERS guidelines: adenocarcinoma in situ (AIS); minimally invasive adenocarcinoma (MIA); or invasive adenocarcinoma (IA).

Imaging and Baseline Predictors of Cognitive Performance in Minor Ischemic Stroke and Patients With Transient Ischemic Attack at 90 Days.

Background And Purpose: Few studies have examined predictors of cognitive impairment after minor ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attack (TIA). We examined clinical and imaging features associated with worse cognitive performance at 90 days.

Methods: TIA or patients with minor stroke underwent neuropsychological testing 90 days post event.

Exploring the Validity of the Short Version of the Problem Behaviours Assessment (PBA-s) for Huntington's disease: A Rasch Analysis.

Background: The short version of the Problem Behaviours Assessment (PBA-s) is the recommended outcome measure for behavioural symptoms in Huntington's disease. Rasch analysis was used to further investigate the measurement limitations of the PBA-s.

Objectives: 1) To assess the psychometric properties of the 11 severity and frequency items within the PBA-s and 2) to determine the construct validity of using a total PBA-s score as a clinical outcome measure.

No apparent correlation between honey bee forager gut microbiota and honey production.

One of the best indicators of colony health for the European honey bee (Apis mellifera) is its performance in the production of honey. Recent research into the microbial communities naturally populating the bee gut raise the question as to whether there is a correlation between microbial community structure and colony productivity. In this work, we used 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing to explore the microbial composition associated with forager bees from honey bee colonies producing large amounts of surplus honey (productive) and compared them to colonies producing less (unproductive).

Rapid isolation of dengue-neutralizing antibodies from single cell-sorted human antigen-specific memory B-cell cultures.

Monitoring antigen-specific memory B cells and the antibodies they encode is important for understanding the specificity, breadth and duration of immune response to an infection or vaccination. The antibodies isolated could further help design vaccine antigens for raising relevant protective immune responses. However, developing assays to measure and isolate antigen-specific memory B cells is technically challenging due to the low frequencies of these cells that exist in the circulating blood.

CO-occurring exposure to perchlorate, nitrate and thiocyanate alters thyroid function in healthy pregnant women.

Background: Adequate maternal thyroid function during pregnancy is necessary for normal fetal brain development, making pregnancy a critical window of vulnerability to thyroid disrupting insults. Sodium/iodide symporter (NIS) inhibitors, namely perchlorate, nitrate, and thiocyanate, have been shown individually to competitively inhibit uptake of iodine by the thyroid. Several epidemiologic studies examined the association between these individual exposures and thyroid function.

Prenatal exposure to the organophosphate pesticide chlorpyrifos and childhood tremor.

Background: The organophosphate insecticide chlorpyrifos (CPF), widely used for agricultural purposes, has been linked to neurodevelopmental deficits. Possible motor effects at low to moderate levels of exposure have not been evaluated.

Methods: Prenatal exposure to CPF was measured in umbilical cord blood in a sample of 263 inner-city minority children, who were followed prospectively.

Strong, spectrally-tunable chirality in diffractive metasurfaces.

Metamaterials and metasurfaces provide a paradigm-changing approach for manipulating light. Their potential has been evinced by recent demonstrations of chiral responses much greater than those of natural materials. Here, we demonstrate theoretically and experimentally that the extrinsic chiral response of a metasurface can be dramatically enhanced by near-field diffraction effects.

Social and Structural Factors Shaping High Rates of Incarceration among Sex Workers in a Canadian Setting.

In light of the emphasis on enforcement-based approaches towards sex work, and the well-known negative impacts of these approaches on women's health, safety and well-being, we conducted a study to investigate the prevalence and correlates of recent incarceration among a cohort of women sex workers in Vancouver, Canada. Data were obtained from an open prospective community cohort of female and transgender women sex workers, known as An Evaluation of Sex Workers' Health Access (AESHA). Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses, using generalized estimating equations (GEE), were used to model the effect of social and structural factors on the likelihood of incarceration over the 44-month follow-up period (January 2010-August 2013).

Interactions between Cooccurring Lactic Acid Bacteria in Honey Bee Hives.

In contrast to the honey bee gut, which is colonized by a few characteristic bacterial clades, the hive of the honey bee is home to a diverse array of microbes, including many lactic acid bacteria (LAB). In this study, we used culture, combined with sequencing, to sample the LAB communities found across hive environments. Specifically, we sought to use network analysis to identify microbial hubs sharing nearly identical operational taxonomic units, evidence which may indicate cooccurrence of bacteria between environments.

Radiologic Evaluation of Small Lepidic Adenocarcinomas to Guide Decision Making in Surgical Resection.

Background: The International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer/American Thoracic Society/European Respiratory Society classification of pulmonary adenocarcinomas identifies indolent lesions associated with low recurrence, superior survival, and the potential for sublobar resection. The distinction, however, is determined on the pathologic evaluation, limiting preoperative surgical planning. We sought to determine whether preoperative computed tomography (CT) characteristics could guide decisions about the extent of the pulmonary resection.
