Compassionate practice is expected of Registered Nurses (RNs) around the world while at the same time remaining a contested concept. Nevertheless, student nurses are expected to enact compassionate practice in order to become RNs. In order for this to happen they require professional socialisation within environments where compassion can flourish.

Purpose: To facilitate a better understanding of incidentally noted cystic pancreatic lesions, since these lesions often pose a challenge regarding appropriate management.

Methods: This article reviews pathophysiology, prevalence, significance, and recommendations for management of the various pancreatic cystic lesions. Illustrative cases are demonstrated.

Vitamin D deficiency in UK South Asian Women of childbearing age: a comparative longitudinal investigation with UK Caucasian women.

Summary: This is the first 1-year longitudinal study which assesses vitamin D deficiency in young UK-dwelling South Asian women. The findings are that vitamin D deficiency is extremely common in this group of women and that it persists all year around, representing a significant public health concern.

Introduction: There is a lack of longitudinal data assessing seasonal variation in vitamin D status in young South Asian women living in northern latitudes.

The iPad as a mobile device for CT display and interpretation: diagnostic accuracy for identification of pulmonary embolism.

Recent software developments enable interactive, real-time axial, 2D and 3D CT display on an iPad by cloud computing from a server for remote rendering. The purpose of this study was to compare radiologists' interpretative performance on the iPad to interpretation on the conventional picture archive and communication system (PACS). Fifty de-identified contrast-enhanced CT exams performed for suspected pulmonary embolism were compiled as an educational tool to prepare our residents for night call.

The National CT Colonography Trial: assessment of accuracy in participants 65 years of age and older.

Purpose: To conduct post-hoc analysis of National CT Colonography Trial data and compare the sensitivity and specificity of computed tomographic (CT) colonography in participants younger than 65 years with those in participants aged 65 years and older.

Materials And Methods: Of 2600 asymptomatic participants recruited at 15 centers for the trial, 497 were 65 years of age or older. Approval of this HIPAA-compliant study was obtained from the institutional review board of each site, and informed consent was obtained from each subject.

Superior mesenteric artery syndrome: spectrum of CT findings with multiplanar reconstructions and 3-D imaging.

Objective: This article reviews the causes, clinical presentation, and CT diagnosis of superior mesenteric artery (SMA) syndrome.

Conclusion: In conjunction with an appropriate clinical history, several CT findings can suggest the diagnosis of SMA syndrome. These findings include narrowing of the aortomesenteric angle and distance, distension of the stomach and duodenum, and dilatation of the left renal vein with left-sided venous collaterals.

Pre- and postoperative urodynamic findings in patients after a bulbourethral composite suspension with intraoperative urodynamically controlled sling tension adjustment for postprostatectomy incontinence.

Objectives: To compare pre- and postoperative urodynamic findings in patients with a bulbourethral composite suspension and intraoperative urodynamically controlled sling tension adjustment.

Methods And Patients: All data were prospectively collected from 10 patients (mean age 66 years) who successfully underwent bulbourethral composite suspension for moderate to severe postprostatectomy incontinence. Patients were evaluated preoperatively and 3-6 months postoperatively by urodynamic measurements, including urethra pressure profiles (UPPs) and pressure flow studies (PFSs).

Tuning the activity of mitochondria-penetrating peptides for delivery or disruption.

Mitochondrially targeted agents have the capacity to be both vehicles for the delivery of bioactive agents and mitochondrial disrupters and show promise for the treatment of various diseases. Engineering these agents to specifically accumulate or disrupt the mitochondrion is challenging, as there is a fine line between characteristics of the molecules that accomplish each task. Here, we assess the physicochemical properties governing mitochondrial matrix accumulation or membrane disruption caused by mitochondria-penetrating peptides.

Diverticulitis complicated by fistulous communication of sigmoid colon with anterior sacral meningocele in a patient with Marfan syndrome.

Rare in the general public, dural ectasia is a common finding in patients with Marfan syndrome. Complications are not frequent but include constipation, urinary retention, and meningitis. Presented here is a case of bacterial meningitis secondary to fistulous communication between a sacral meningocele and sigmoid colon in the setting of diverticulitis.

This paper presents a search for the -channel exchange of an -parity violating scalar top quark ([Formula: see text]) in the continuum using 2.1 fb of data collected by the ATLAS detector in [Formula: see text] collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. Data are found to be consistent with the expectation from the Standard Model backgrounds.

Transitional cell carcinoma of the upper urinary tract: optimizing image interpretation with 3D reconstructions.

Purpose: This article reviews the pathophysiology of transitional cell carcinoma (TCC), CT urography (CTU) protocols, different possible 3D reconstruction techniques, and the importance of 3D reconstructions for appropriate interpretation.

Results/conclusion: CTU has largely replaced conventional IV pyelography in the evaluation of the upper urinary tract for TCC. The majority of large lesions can be easily seen on standard axial images with multiplanar reformats.

Single-centre evaluation of the extraperitoneal and transperitoneal approach in robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy.

Objective: Robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) is feasible using either an extraperitoneal (EP) or a transperitoneal (TP) approach. This study reports on the experience of a single hospital using both techniques.

Pancreatic surgery for the radiologist, 2011: an illustrated review of classic and newer surgical techniques for pancreatic tumor resection.

Objective: Pancreatic surgery has evolved considerably since the earliest described pancreatectomies were performed in the late 1800s. Emerging surgical techniques for pancreatic cancer have modified what was traditionally deemed unresectable disease. This review summarizes the main type of pancreatic resections used for tumor removal on the basis of location and biologic behavior.

Transverse upper gracilis flap as an alternative to abdominal tissue breast reconstruction: technique and modifications.

Background: The inner thigh skin and fat based on the transverse upper gracilis musculocutaneous flap blood supply provide an autologous donor area with qualities favorable to microvascular breast reconstruction. The flap can be shaped to mimic a mastectomy specimen, providing excellent contour and projection, and has a consistent blood supply. The characteristics and skin color of the flap allow for immediate nipple-areola complex reconstruction in skin-sparing mastectomy.

Common incidental findings on MDCT: survey of radiologist recommendations for patient management.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate for agreement with respect to how radiologists report incidental findings encountered on CT.

Methods: A multiple-choice survey was designed to query radiologists about how they handle 12 incidental findings on body CT, assuming the patient is a 45-year-old woman with no history of malignancy. Included were a 1-cm thyroid nodule, a 5-mm noncalcified lung nodule, coronary artery calcification, a 2-cm adrenal nodule, a 2-cm pancreatic cyst, a 1-cm enhancing liver lesion, a 2-cm high-density renal cyst, short-segment small bowel intussusception, a 1-cm splenic cyst, focal gallbladder wall calcification, and a 3-cm ovarian cyst in both a premenopausal woman and a postmenopausal woman.
