The structure and delivery of preclerkship undergraduate medical education has changed significantly over the past decade. Asynchronous didactic lectures are now routinely paired with in-person sessions that emphasize active and small-group learning. In this environment, educators tasked with teaching pulmonary medicine should be familiar with the growing number of educational technologies that can transform how and where content is delivered to students.

Central to GAS pathogenesis is the presence of prophage encoded virulence genes. The conserved phage gene for the protein paratox (Prx) is genetically linked to virulence genes, but the reason for this linkage is unknown.

Physical inactivity, conversely, has been associated with several negative health outcomes. One topic that has been consistently examined is the relationship between physical activity and academic performance in children; however, studies that involve university-level students have not been aggregated to date.

A comparison between backscattering and transmission detection modes was conducted to demonstrate the feasibility of performing SETRS analyses. The impact of various parameters on the SERS signal intensity such as sample volume, lens collection optic, laser beam size and laser power were then examined.

Its integrity requires the correct folding and insertion of outer membrane proteins (OMPs) by the membrane-embedded β-barrel assembly machinery (BAM). Unfolded OMPs are delivered to BAM by the periplasmic chaperone SurA, but how SurA and BAM work together to ensure successful OMP delivery and folding remains unclear.

This regimen extends survival when compared to single-agent treatments, but disease progression is unavoidable. By using whole-genome CRISPR screening and RNA sequencing, we characterize the vulnerabilities of both persister and D/T-resistant cellular models.

This study aimed to robustly optimise a synthesis process of silver nanoparticles to improve the measured SERS signal repeatability and the protocol synthesis repeatability. The process is inspired by a chemical reduction method associated with microwave irradiation to guarantee better controlled and uniform heating.

However, a PMD must be repaired for the cell to survive this wounding event. Previous work suggested that the protein Prkd1 (also known as PKCμ) may be a critical component of this PMD repair process, but the specific role of Prkd1 in osteocyte mechanobiology had not yet been tested.

GSA results in a long residual limb with little postoperative swelling and less potential for muscular atrophy, so stable limb volume may allow the use of seal-in suction for suspension for preparatory prostheses. The purpose of this case series was to report on the efficacy of seal-in suction preparatory prostheses for 2 adults with traumatic GSA.

Critical issues in forensic science quality management have emerged in recent decades. The debate on accrediting quality management systems of forensic laboratories is relevant to the African context. Neuteboom, Ross, Bugeja, Willis, Roux, and Lothridge (2022) have conducted a comprehensive survey exploring critical issues in their article "Quality Management in Forensic Science: A Closer Inspection.

However, so far, the portfolio of successes has been mostly limited to highly abundant complexes or to structures that are relatively unambiguous and easy to identify through electron microscopy. In order to realize the full potential of this revolution, researchers would have to be able to pinpoint lower abundance species and obtain functional annotations on the state of objects of interest which would then be correlated to ultrastructural information to build a complete picture of the structure-function relationships underpinning biological processes.

The β-barrel assembly machinery (BAM complex) is essential for outer membrane protein (OMP) folding in Gram-negative bacteria, and represents a promising antimicrobial target. Several conformational states of BAM have been reported, but all have been obtained under conditions which lack the unique features and complexity of the outer membrane (OM). Here, we use Pulsed Electron-Electron Double Resonance (PELDOR, or DEER) spectroscopy distance measurements to interrogate the conformational ensemble of the BAM complex in cells.

The article by Maseme, Gardner and Mahomed discusses the need for clarifications and amendments to South Africa's legal framework, particularly the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), 4 of 2013, which governs broad consent for biobank research. The authors emphasise the importance of addressing conflicts between POPIA and the ethical standards stipulated by the Department of Health. The article calls for collaboration between the forensic science community and the Academy of Science of South Africa, to develop a uniform code of conduct, as per the requirements of POPIA.

Methods: This was a secondary analysis of a cross-sectional dataset collected through an interdisciplinary limb loss clinic between September 2013 and November 2022. Self-report medication lists were reviewed during in-clinic face-to-face interviews and compared to the American Geriatrics Society Beers Criteria corresponding to the patient's evaluation year.
Unpaid carers often experience poor mental and physical health linked to their caring role. Engagement in physical activity has been shown to alleviate these negative health outcomes, but it is harder for carers to find the time, energy and space to exercise. This qualitative study, based in the UK, explored the feasibility of an online, dance-based physical activity intervention with six female unpaid carers.

While there were many precautions in place to hinder the spread of COVID-19, there has also been a substantial increase of new research on SARS-CoV-2 that can be utilized to further mitigate the transmission risk of this novel virus. This review paper aims to identify the building parameters of indoor spaces that could have considerable influence on the transmission of SARS-CoV-2.

Background: Aesthetic soft-tissue filler injections for lip enhancement are popular and performed throughout the world. When injecting lips with a cannula, as the cannula is advanced, resistance is perceived in consistent locations, potentially indicating boundaries between intralabial compartments.
Objective: We aimed to investigate whether intralabial compartments exist and, if so, to describe their volumes, location, boundaries, and dimensions.
Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a vibrational widely used technique thanks to its multiple advantages such as its high specificity and sensitivity. The Raman signal exaltation comes from the use of metallic nanoparticles (Nps) acting as antennas by amplifying the Raman scattering. Controlling the Nps synthesis is a major point for the implementation of SERS in routine analysis and especially in quantitative applications.
