We synthesized a new silyl porphyrin derivative conjugated with 6-deoxy-6-sulfo-α-d-glucopyranose (SGlc). Conjugation with SGlc improved A549 cellular uptake without significant changes in the photophysical and photochemical properties and subcellular localization. This improved cellular uptake led to enhanced photodynamic activity.

Article Synopsis
  • The study developed an image analysis method to evaluate forearm function during reaching tasks in rats following a 6-OHDA injection into the striatum.
  • After seven days, the success rate for reaching tasks decreased to 40.5%, indicating impaired performance.
  • The injection led to notable changes in forearm pronation angle, posture control, and targeting accuracy, highlighting the detrimental effects on motor function and coordination.

The rat reaching task is one of the best paradigms from behavioral study of upper limb movements. Rats are trained to reach and grab a pellet by extending their hand through a vertical slit. A few conventional imaging systems specific for the rat reaching task are commercially available with a high installation cost.

The growth of sputtered GaN at low temperature is strongly desired to realize the dissemination of low-cost GaN high electron mobility transistor devices for next-generation communication technology. In this work, the roles of atomic nitrogen (N)/hydrogen (H) in GaN film growth on AlN/sapphire substrates by chemically assisted dual source sputtering are studied at a low growth temperature of 600 °C under a pressure of 2 Pa using vacuum ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy. The lateral growth was strongly enhanced with an appropriate H/N flux ratio of 1.

A characteristic subset of microglia expressing CD11c appears in response to brain damage. However, the functional role of CD11c microglia, as well as the mechanism of its induction, are poorly understood. Here we report that the genetic ablation of signal regulatory protein α (SIRPα), a membrane protein, induced the emergence of CD11c microglia in the brain white matter.

Background: With the introduction of imatinib, a first-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) to inhibit BCR-ABL1 kinase, the outcome of chronic-phase chronic myeloid leukemia (CP-CML) has improved dramatically. However, only a small proportion of CP-CML patients subsequently achieve a deep molecular response (DMR) with imatinib. Dasatinib, a second-generation TKI, is more potent than imatinib in the inhibition of BCR-ABL1 tyrosine kinase in vitro and more effective in CP-CML patients who do not achieve an optimal response with imatinib treatment.

Eltrombopag, a thrombopoietin (TPO) receptor agonist, is effective for treating refractory immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). However, the development of bone marrow fibrosis is a concern. A 78-year-old man was diagnosed with ITP in 2004.

The BESS-Polar Collaboration measured the energy spectra of cosmic-ray protons and helium during two long-duration balloon flights over Antarctica in December 2004 and December 2007, at substantially different levels of solar modulation. Proton and helium spectra probe the origin and propagation history of cosmic rays in the galaxy, and are essential to calculations of the expected spectra of cosmic-ray antiprotons, positrons, and electrons from interactions of primary cosmic-ray nuclei with the interstellar gas, and to calculations of atmospheric muons and neutrinos. We report absolute spectra at the top of the atmosphere for cosmic-ray protons in the kinetic energy range 0.

Article Synopsis
  • * After an average follow-up of 52 months, the 5-year overall survival was 70.6%, indicating that many patients benefited from the treatment.
  • * Although relapse was a common cause of death, there were no deaths directly related to the treatment itself, but late complications such as renal issues and other conditions were noted.

The effects of all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) and valproic acid (VPA), alone and in combination, on the human acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) cell line NB4 were investigated in view of differentiation induction and growth inhibition. After 48 h of treatment, not only ATRA but also VPA induced differentiation in NB4 cells, and their combination further augmented the differentiation activity. Furthermore, the upregulation of transcription factors including CCAAT/enhancer-binding proteins (CEBPα, β, ε) and PU.

Article Synopsis
  • - Elderly patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and higher-risk myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) tend to have worse outcomes than younger patients even with aggressive chemotherapy.
  • - A study treated 10 higher-risk MDS patients and 12 AML patients over 65 with an oral therapy using cytarabine ocfosfate and etoposide, achieving response rates of 60% and 41.7% respectively.
  • - Although survival rates between MDS and AML patients were similar, responsive patients had significantly longer median survival (790 days) compared to nonresponsive patients (174 days), suggesting the therapy is promising for older higher-risk MDS patients.

A close correlation between the cytocidal effects of arsenic trioxide (ATO) and aquaporin-9 (AQP9) expression levels has been proposed, yet detailed studies are still needed to confirm this association. Thus, in the present study, the correlation between the expression levels of AQP9 and sensitivity to ATO was investigated using two acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) cell lines, NB4 and HT93A, as well as primary APL cells from newly diagnosed and relapsed APL patients. A substantially higher sensitivity to ATO-mediated induction of apoptosis was observed in the NB4 cells when compared to that in the HT93A cells.

Peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTCLs) are a rare and heterogeneous group of non-Hodgkin lymphomas, often resulting in poor prognoses. The CHOP chemotherapy regimen, which includes cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine and prednisone, has been used previously to treat other types of lymphomas. Here, we examined the efficacy and safety of a dose-intensified CHOP regimen (Double-CHOP), which was followed by autologous stem-cell transplantation (ASCT) or high-dose methotrexate (HDMTX), in PTCL patients.

The effects of arsenic trioxide (ATO), all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), alone or in combination, were investigated by focusing on differentiation, growth inhibition and arsenic uptake in the acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) cell line HT93A. ATO induced differentiation at low concentrations (0.125 µM) and apoptosis at high concentrations (1-2 µM).

Two women with rheumatoid arthritis who had experienced miscarriages became pregnant while they were under etanercept treatment. One stopped etanercept after 3 weeks with increased doses of prednisolone, and the other restarted etanercept at a half doses 3 months later. They delivered a healthy baby at full term, and no problems in both expecting mothers and babies were observed.

Background: Speciation of arsenic trioxide (ATO) metabolites in clinical samples such as peripheral blood (PB) from acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) patients has been conducted. However, speciation of arsenicals in bone marrow (BM) has not yet been performed. Profiles of arsenic speciation in plasma of BM were thus investigated and compared with those of PB plasma from a relapsed APL patient.

  • * A study evaluated the efficacy of oral itraconazole solution (ITCZ-OS) in preventing fungal infections among 39 immunosuppressed patients, with 18 receiving the treatment and 21 not.
  • * The results showed that none in the prophylactic group developed infections, while 33% of the non-prophylactic group did, indicating ITCZ-OS may be a beneficial preventative measure for these patients without significant toxicity issues.

A 57-year-old man complaining of weight loss and abdominal pain, was admitted to our hospital. Enhanced computed tomography scanning showed an irregularly enhanced effect in the spleen suggesting a diffuse splenic tumor.
