Objectives We aim to investigate factors associated with rebleeding and mortality within one month of transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) for spontaneous muscle hematoma (SMH) and the impact of the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Methods This retrospective analysis included 33 patients who underwent TAE for SMH at a single center between 2012 and 2022. After 2020, eight of these patients had the COVID-19 infection.

Physical and biological properties of a novel anti-adhesive punctate uneven gelatin film.

Since abdominal adhesion are quite problematic in abdominal and pelvic surgery, the conventional HA/CMC film are commonly used as an anti-adhesive material. However, such types are difficult to be rolled and delivered through the port of laparoscopic surgical devices due to adherence to the laparoscopic port or other parts of the films. To create an anti-adhesion film with more favorable handling properties and anti-adhesive effect, we developed a novel punctate uneven gelatin film (PU GF).

Association between edaravone use and activities of daily living in older patients with atherothrombotic stroke: an observational study using Japanese real-world data.

Background: Edaravone is marketed in nine countries, although only Japan has approved edaravone for improvement of neurological symptom, disability of activities of daily living (ADL), and functional disability associated with acute stroke. This study aimed to elucidate the association of edaravone use with ADL using real-world data of older patients with atherothrombotic stroke.

Methods: This retrospective observational research using the Medical Data Vision database in Japan included patients aged 65 years and older who had acute ischemic stroke of the atherothrombotic subtype.

Cathagines A-D, new bisindole alkaloids from Catharanthus roseus.

Four new bisindole alkaloids, cathagines A (1)-D (4) consisting of an aspidosperma and the fused tetracyclic 3-spirooxindole derived from an iboga type skeleton were isolated from the whole plant of Catharanthus roseus. The structures including absolute stereochemistry were elucidated on the basis of 2D NMR data and CD spectra. Cathagine B (2) showed moderate anti-malarial activity against Plasmodium falciparum 3D7.

Ten-year survival after resection of a huge rhabdomyosarcoma in the pericardial cavity.

Background: Primary malignant cardiac tumors are exceedingly rare and cardiac rhabdomyosarcoma among them is an exceptional rarity characterized by a dismal poor prognosis.

Case Presentation: A 48-year-old man had suffered from a persistent cough lasting for more than 6 months and computed tomography showed a huge mass in the pericardial cavity with heterogeneous content. Following referral to our department for suspected cardiac malignancy, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging revealed a lucent layer on the boundary around the mass, suggesting the feasibility of surgical resection.

We aimed to clarify the relationship between intra- and periorgan fats, visceral fat, and subcutaneous fat. We used abdominal computed tomography to evaluate intra- and periorgan fat accumulations in the pancreas, liver, spleen, renal parenchyma, renal sinus, and skeletal muscle. The relationships between these fats, visceral fat, and subcutaneous fat were examined by using partial correlation and covariance analysis, adjusting for BMI.

Most studies on fat appetite have focused on long-chain triglycerides (LCTs) due to their obesogenic properties. Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), conversely, exhibit antiobesogenic effects; however, the regulation of MCT intake remains elusive. Here, we demonstrate that mice can distinguish between MCTs and LCTs, and the specific appetite for MCTs is governed by hepatic β-oxidation.

Persistence of Anti-SE36 Antibodies Induced by the Malaria Vaccine Candidate BK-SE36/CpG in 5-10-Year-Old Burkinabe Children Naturally Exposed to Malaria.

Information on the dynamics and decline/persistence of antibody titres is important in vaccine development. A recent vaccine trial in malaria-exposed, healthy African adults and children living in a malaria hyperendemic and seasonal area (Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso) was the first study in which BK-SE36/CpG was administered to different age groups. In 5- to 10-year-old children, the risk of malaria infection was markedly lower in the BK-SE36/CpG arm compared to the control arm.

Ultraconformable Capacitive Strain Sensor Utilizing Network Structure of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes for Wireless Body Sensing.

Capture and real-time recording of precise body movements using strain sensors provide personal information for healthcare monitoring and management. To acquire this information, a sensor that conforms to curved irregular surfaces, including biological tissue, is desired to record complex body movements while acting like a second skin to avoid interference with the movements. In this study, we developed a thin-film-type capacitive strain sensor that is flexible and stretchable on the surface of a living body.

Computed tomography-guided percutaneous needle biopsy for middle mediastinal tumors with retroaortic paravertebral approach: A case report.

A 74-year-old man was referred to our hospital for a close examination of a mediastinal mass. Contrast-enhanced CT showed a middle mediastinal tumor. We planned to perform a CT-guided percutaneous needle biopsy of the tumor using a retroaortic paravertebral approach to avoid transpulmonary puncture.

Improving cell-specific recombination using AAV vectors in the murine CNS by capsid and expression cassette optimization.

The production of cell-type- and age-specific genetically modified mice is a powerful approach for unraveling unknown gene functions. Here, we present a simple and timesaving method that enables adeno-associated virus (AAV)-mediated cell-type- and age-specific recombination in floxed mice. To achieve astrocyte-specific recombination in floxed Ai14 reporter mice, we intravenously injected blood-brain barrier-penetrating AAV-PHP.

Effects of liraglutide on intrapancreatic fat deposition in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Background & Aims: Ectopic fat deposition is associated with worsening of glycemic control. This study was conducted to determine whether liraglutide reduces ectopic fat deposition, especially in pancreas, in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D).

Methods: We retrospectively recruited T2D patients who underwent abdominal unenhanced CT scans both before and after administration of liraglutide (N = 13) or glimepiride (N = 29).
