Background/aims: Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) and pancreatic endocrine tumors can develop at multiple sites of the pancreas at the same time, sometimes necessitating total pancreatectomy. When low-grade pancreatic malignancy is treated surgically, preservation of function to improve long-term QOL is emphasized. For low grade malignancy tumor of the pancreatic head and tail, we performed middle- segment-preserving pancreatectomy (MSPP), with resection of the pancreatic head and tail alone, resulting in favorable QOL.

We evaluated the impact of postoperative C-reactive protein on recurrence and prognosis in patients with N0M0 clear cell renal cell carcinoma.
Materials And Methods: We defined increased preoperative C-reactive protein as 1 mg/dl or greater and postoperative C-reactive protein normalization as at least 1 postoperative measurement of less than 0.
Together with Nikkiso in Shizuoka, Japan, we developed a new method for measuring the rate of vascular access recirculation by the blood volume monitor. This measurement is performed via a method of dilution that employs a marker produced by rapid ultrafiltration using a dialysis machine. Methods: A review of the literature and authors' experience was undertaken.
We report a rare case in which upper ureteral rupture was the primary symptom of malignant lymphoma. A 74-year-old female visited our hospital with left flank pain. Computed tomography showed urinoma around the left kidney and retrograde pyelography showed a diffuse filling defect in the left ureter and a rupture of the upper portion of that ureter.

We report a rare case of primary amelanotic malignant melanoma of the female urethra. A 58-year-old female with complaint of nodule on the external urethral meatus was referred to our hospital. Pathological diagnosis of the biopsy specimen from the nodule was malignant melanoma.

In most of the patients our group has treated, the inferior pancreaticoduodenal artery (IPDA), one of the efferent arteries of the head of the pancreas, has formed a short common trunk with the first jejunal artery (FJA). Methods: Renal cancer cells (769P, 786O, A498, ACHN, Caki-1) and renal proximal tubule epithelial cells were treated with SAHA (0-5 μM) with or without ritonavir (0-50 μM). Cell viability, clonogenecity, and changes in cell cycle were evaluated.
Objective: To evaluate if and why obesity affects the clinical outcome in patients undergoing high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) treatment for prostate cancer (CaP).
Methods: 115 patients who underwent HIFU treatment for localized CaP were categorized as obese, overweight or normal according to body mass index (BMI). The thickness of the anterior perirectal fat tissue (APFT) was measured by transrectal ultrasonography.
Background: Signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) regulates the expression of genes that mediate cell survival, proliferation, and angiogenesis and is aberrantly activated in various types of malignancies, including renal cell carcinoma (RCC). We examined whether it could be a novel therapeutic target for RCC by using the STAT3 inhibitor WP1066.
Methods: The antitumour activities and related mechanisms of WP1066 were investigated in vitro on renal cancer cell lines and in vivo on murine xenografts.

The current literature contains little information about laparoscopic surgery for pancreatic disease. We performed spleen-preserving distal pancreatectomy on 7 cases during the period from 2005 to 2008 at our university hospital, including 2 laparoscopic operations. Case 2: A 54-year-old woman was found to have a hypoechoic 4 x 4 cm lesion in the tail of the pancreas, adjacent to and impinging on the spleen.

Objective: We evaluated the efficacy and outcome of one-stage oral mucosa graft urethroplasty, which is currently the procedure of choice for treating lengthy and complicated urethral strictures not amenable to excision and primary end-to-end anastomosis.
Patients And Methods: Seven patients 33 to 74 years old (mean age = 53.7) underwent one-stage oral mucosa graft urethroplasty for a stricture in either the bulbar urethra (four patients), penile urethra (two patients), or pan-anterior urethra (one patient).

To apply duodenum-preserving pancreatic head resection (DPPHR) as radical procedure for benign or low-grade malignant tumors, it needs the reconciliation of complete pancreatic head resection and preservation of the bile duct and peripancreatic vessels. Several modifications have been introduced and applied to remove these lesions, however, the techniques have not been made clear in the management of the peripancreatic vessels and the bile duct. The long-term outcomes of the DPPHR have been reported as extremely rare in comparison with pylorus preserving pancreatoduodenectomy (PPPD) in these pancreatic head tumors.

NEP directly associates with multiple proteins at the cell surface including Ezrin/Radixin/Moesin (ERM) proteins and the PTEN tumor suppressor protein. In the present study, we evaluated the impact of the presence of the worst-nucleolar-grade component and also tried to determine predictors for recurrence and prognosis in patients with the worst grade component.
Methods: We evaluated 314 patients with RCC.
A 66-year-old man visited his nearby clinic with a complaint of left lower abdominal pain. Materials And Methods: We present the first series of successful totally laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy (TLPD) for advanced gastric cancer with suspected infiltration to the pancreatic head.
Results: TLPD was successfully performed without adverse events during surgery and resulted in favorable short-term outcomes of three patients with locally advanced gastric cancer with suspected invasion to the pancreas.
Neutral endopeptidase (NEP) is a 90- to 110-kDa cell-surface peptidase that is normally expressed by numerous tissues but whose expression is lost or reduced in a variety of malignancies. The anti-tumorigenic function of NEP is mediated not only by its catalytic activity but also through direct protein-protein interactions of its cytosolic region with several binding partners, including Lyn kinase, PTEN, and ezrin/radixin/moesin (ERM) proteins. We have previously shown that mutation of the K(19)K(20)K(21) basic cluster in NEPs' cytosolic region to residues QNI disrupts binding to the ERM proteins.
