Purpose: Stress urinary incontinence is a postoperative complication occurring in patients with pelvic organ prolapse (POP). Although the 1-hour pad test measures the degree of urinary incontinence qualitatively and quantitatively, some elderly women undergoing POP surgery do not have the daily activities of living to perform the pad test. Therefore, we examined whether the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire Short Form (ICIQ-SF) could be used as an alternative tool for pad tests.

Article Synopsis
  • This study validated the effectiveness of DFS (direct fast scarlet) staining for diagnosing eosinophilic colitis (EC) by comparing it with standard HE (hematoxylin and eosin) staining among 50 EC patients and 60 control subjects.
  • Results showed a significant difference in eosinophil counts between EC and controls in the right hemi-colon but not in the left, where DFS staining proved crucial for identifying degranulated eosinophils, enhancing diagnostic accuracy.
  • The study suggests that using DFS staining can improve the diagnosis of EC, especially in challenging areas like the left hemi-colon, where traditional methods fell short.

  • - The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of duodenum-preserving pancreatic head resection (DPPHR) as a treatment for pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PNETs) in relation to curability and patient quality of life post-surgery.
  • - Seven patients underwent DPPHR between January 2011 and December 2021, with the procedure showing manageable postoperative complications and achieving complete curative resections without positive tumor margins.
  • - The findings suggest that DPPHR is a viable alternative to more invasive surgeries like pancreaticoduodenectomy for treating PNETs, allowing for thorough pathological assessment while minimizing patient recovery concerns.

Transurethral procedures such as direct vision internal urethrotomy and urethral dilation have been the traditional treatments for urethral strictures. However, transurethral procedures are associated with high recurrence rates, resulting in many uncured cases and prompting major international urological societies to recommend urethroplasty as the standard treatment owing to its high success rate. In contrast, many Japanese general urologists have little doubts about treating urethral strictures with transurethral treatment.

Introduction: Transvaginal mesh surgery (TVM) is an effective treatment measure for pelvic organ prolapse (POP). However, the ORIHIME mesh (Kono Seisakusho, Japan, Tokyo), which has the disadvantage of poor adherence to tissues, is currently the only product available for this procedure. Our research team has previously developed a modified ORIHIME mesh with wider arms with the aim of minimizing the risk of POP recurrence.

  • The study evaluated treatment strategies for nonfunctioning small pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (NF-spNENs) in a large Japanese cohort, with a focus on surgically resected cases.
  • A total of 606 NF-spNENs were analyzed, revealing that tumor grade and size significantly impacted outcomes, including lymph node metastasis and recurrence.
  • Findings suggest that treatment plans should prioritize personalized approaches based on tumor grading and size rather than relying solely on size for decision-making.

Introduction Transvaginal mesh surgery (TVM) is an effective treatment option for pelvic organ prolapse (POP). Although ORIHIME®, the only available mesh product, is thin, soft, and easy to handle, it has the disadvantages of sliding off or mildly adhering to the surrounding tissues. The current study compared the efficacy of using wide-arm ORIHIME (Kono Seisakusho, Japan, Tokyo), non-wide arm ORIHIME, Gynemesh PS (Johnson and Johnson, Japan, Tokyo), and Polyform (Boston Scientific Japan, Japan, Tokyo) meshes for TVM.
