Ovulation results from the cyclical recruitment of non-renewing, quiescent oocytes for growth. Therefore, the primordial follicles that are established during development from an oocyte encapsulated by granulosa cells are thought to comprise the lifelong ovarian reserve . However, using oocyte lineage tracing in mice, we observed that a subset of oocytes recruited for growth in the first juvenile wave remain paused for many months before continuing growth, ovulation, fertilization and development into healthy offspring.

There is a paucity of information regarding the health status of free-ranging eastern indigo snakes (EIS; Drymarchon couperi) in heavily modified and developing landscapes. As a component of regional Florida Everglades restoration efforts, several areas occupied by EIS are being converted from agricultural lands to reservoirs. From 2020 to 2022, 28 EIS were opportunistically captured at two of these sites and brought into captivity to join a captive breeding colony; however, 11 snakes died within 5 mo of capture.

Preoperative narcotic use is associated with diminished outcomes and increased complications in patients undergoing primary total joint arthroplasty (TJA). The goal of this study was to compare self-reported and state database identified preoperative narcotic use and correlate it with perioperative narcotic requirements in patients undergoing primary arthroplasty. A total of 788 patients undergoing unilateral TJA from a single institution were examined using self-reported preoperative narcotic use questionnaires and were verified using the Massachusetts Prescriber Awareness Tool (MassPAT).

Pollution by microplastics (MPs) is a growing problem that is now well-recognized, as concerning levels of MPs have been found in drinking water, food, and even human tissues. Given the evolving understanding of their toxicological effects on human health, MPs are an area of concern requiring further study. Consequently, there is a need for greater understanding of the performance characteristics of common MP analytical methods and where possible, for standardizing methods and reporting practices.

We have a growing understanding of the light-sensing organs and light-influenced behaviours of animals with distributed visual systems, but we have yet to learn how these animals convert visual input into behavioural output. It has been suggested they consolidate visual information early in their sensory-motor pathways, resulting in them being able to detect visual cues (spatial resolution) without being able to locate them (spatial vision). Selective overexpression of Human epididymal secretory protein E4 (HE4) points to a role in ovarian cancer tumorigenesis but little is known about the role the HE4 gene or the gene product plays. Here we show that elevated HE4 serum levels correlate with chemoresistance and decreased survival rates in EOC patients. HE4 overexpression promoted xenograft tumor growth and chemoresistance against cisplatin in an animal model resulting in reduced survival rates.

In September 2011, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) convened a Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP) Surveillance Definition Working Group to organize a formal process for leaders and experts of key stakeholder organizations to discuss the challenges of VAP surveillance definitions and to propose new approaches to VAP surveillance in adult patients (Table 1). The charges to the Working Group were to (1) critically review a draft, streamlined VAP surveillance definition developed for use in adult patients; (2) suggest modifications to enhance the reliability and credibility of the surveillance definition within the critical care and infection prevention communities; and (3) propose a final adult surveillance definition algorithm to be implemented in the CDC's National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN), taking into consideration the potential future use of the definition algorithm in public reporting, interfacility comparisons, and pay-for-reporting and pay-for-performance programs.
