Background: Total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) is a mainstay treatment for elbow arthropathy and elbow fracture that can relieve pain and restore functional motion. The purpose of this study was to determine the role of surgical indication in the incidence of short-term adverse events and risk factors influencing complications in TEA to treat arthropathy compared to TEA for fracture. Matched cohorts were created to better isolate the impact of the surgical indication.

Article Synopsis
  • A study examined trends in technology-assisted total hip arthroplasty (TA-THA) from 2015 to 2020, comparing it to conventional THA based on data from the ACS-NSQIP database.
  • The analysis included over 219,000 conventional THA cases and about 2,258 TA-THA cases, revealing an increase in TA-THA usage until 2019, followed by a decline in 2020, and a yearly decrease in average hospital stay length until 2020.
  • TA-THA procedures had longer operative times and higher transfusion rates, but no significant difference in complication rates compared to conventional THA, highlighting its growing use without major short-term benefits

  • This study is the first to analyze both patient expectations and satisfaction after endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) using mixed methods, including interviews and statistical analyses.
  • 52 patients participated, revealing that 56% were male, with an average age of 55.7 years; satisfaction was primarily influenced by whether their pre-operative expectations were met.
  • The findings suggest that addressing and aligning patient expectations is crucial for maximizing satisfaction with surgical outcomes in ESS, indicating a need for further research in this area.

Article Synopsis
  • Treatment options for partial distal biceps tendon (DBT) ruptures include conservative management (like physical therapy) and surgical intervention, and choosing the right approach can be difficult for patients and doctors.
  • The study hypothesized that while surgical treatment could lead to more complications, it would also result in better strength, range of motion, and patient satisfaction compared to conservative methods.
  • A systematic review of 13 studies involving 290 patients showed that both treatment options yielded good results, with conservative treatment having slightly worse strength outcomes, while surgical patients had higher complication rates and sometimes lower satisfaction.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates whether the 30-day follow-up period set by the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) is sufficient for detecting complications after orthopedic surgeries.
  • It analyzes data from 271,397 orthopedic cases, focusing on different types of surgical complications and their occurrence rates over time.
  • Results indicate that some complications are likely limited to the 30-day period, while others may be missed during this timeframe, suggesting the need for longer follow-up in future research.

Article Synopsis
  • Traditional postoperative care for proximal hamstring repairs typically involves bracing to protect the hip and knee, but recent studies explore the effectiveness of nonbracing protocols.
  • A systematic review analyzed 25 studies comparing outcomes of braced and nonbraced rehabilitation, focusing on factors like complications, reoperations, patient satisfaction, and return to sports.
  • Findings revealed that braced patients experienced lower reoperation rates and higher patient satisfaction (94.7%) compared to nonbraced patients (88.9%), suggesting that bracing may provide better outcomes in postoperative recovery.*

Background: The inherent nature of the torque-velocity relationship is the inverse nature between the velocity of muscle contraction and torque production and is an indication of muscle function. The purpose of this study was to characterize the torque-velocity relationship in the quadriceps following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction compared to healthy limbs.

Methods: 681 participants were included, 493 of which were patients at least four months following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (23.

Background: Return-to-play (RTP) assessment after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) rarely includes hip strength.

Hypothesis: It was hypothesized that (1) patients after ACLR will have weaker hip abduction (AB) and adduction (AD) strength compared with the contralateral limb, with larger deficits in women, (2) there will be a correlation between hip and thigh strength ratios and patient-reported outcomes (PROs), and (3) hip AB and AD strength will improve over time.

Study Design: Descriptive laboratory study.

Extended solid-state materials based on the hexagonal perovskite framework are typified by close competition between localized magnetic interactions and quasi-molecular electronic states. Here, we report the structural and magnetic properties of the new six-layer hexagonal perovskite BaCaMoO. Neutron diffraction experiments, combined with magnetic susceptibility measurements, show that the MoO dimers retain localized character down to 5 K and adopt nonmagnetic spin-singlet ground states.

The objectives of this qualitative study were to describe the experiences of currently practicing newborn examiner midwives who had accessed their training post registration; explore their views on the inclusion of newborn examination in the pre-registration curriculum and invite them to identify strategies to achieve practical implementation of the inclusion of the newborn examination in pre-registration in the practice setting. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analysed using Thematic Analysis with an inductive approach. Three main themes were identified; experiences of the role, views of the newborn examination being incorporated into the pre-registration midwifery curriculum and practical considerations.

Background: Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is common in critically injured patients. The pathogenesis of VAP is not completely understood. We hypothesized that mechanically ventilated trauma patients who develop pneumonia have a progressive increase in pathogen burden over the course of ventilation until a threshold for symptomatic pneumonia is reached, leading to clinical suspicion of VAP.

Introduction: Rectal injuries have been historically treated with a combination of modalities including direct repair, resection, proximal diversion, presacral drainage, and distal rectal washout. We hypothesized that intraperitoneal rectal injuries may be selectively managed without diversion and the addition of distal rectal washout and presacral drainage in the management of extraperitoneal injuries are not beneficial.

Methods: This is an American Association for the Surgery of Trauma multi-institutional retrospective study from 2004 to 2015 of all patients who sustained a traumatic rectal injury and were admitted to one of the 22 participating centers.

1,25-Dihydroxyvitamin D(3) (1,25D) is known primarily as a regulator of calcium, but 1,25D also promotes phosphate absorption from intestine, reabsorption from kidney, and bone mineral resorption. FGF23 is a newly discovered phosphaturic hormone that, like PTH, lowers serum phosphate by inhibiting renal reabsorption via Npt2a. We show that 1,25D strongly upregulates FGF23 in bone.
