With climate extremes hitting nations across the globe, disproportionately burdening vulnerable developing countries, the prompt operation of the Loss and Damage fund is of paramount importance. As decisions on resource disbursement at the international level, and investment strategies at the national level, loom, the climate science community's role in providing fair and effective evidence is crucial. Attribution science can provide useful information for decision makers, but both ethical implications and deep uncertainty cannot be ignored.

The full-length protein has been extensively investigated as a potential therapeutic against a range of pathogenic bacteria, fungi, and viruses, including SARS-CoV-2. As a respiratory antiviral agent, several activity mechanisms have been demonstrated for lactoferrin, at the extracellular and plasma membrane levels, but as a protein that enters cells it may also have intracellular antiviral activity.

Patient advocacy group involvement in health technology assessments: an observational study.

Background: In some jurisdictions, patients and patient groups may be invited to provide input when Health Technology Assessment (HTA) is used to inform decisions about which medicines should be subsidised or funded. This input can help frame the evidence from a patient perspective, address uncertainties in the evidence and interpret it for the local setting. Influence of the 2015-2016 El Niño on the record-breaking mangrove dieback along northern Australia coast.

This study investigates the underlying climate processes behind the largest recorded mangrove dieback event along the Gulf of Carpentaria coast in northern Australia in late 2015. Using satellite-derived fractional canopy cover (FCC), variation of the mangrove canopies during recent decades are studied, including a severe dieback during 2015-2016. The relationship between mangrove FCC and climate conditions is examined with a focus on the possible role of the 2015-2016 El Niño in altering favorable conditions sustaining the mangroves.

Subcutaneous Infiltration of Indocyanine Green From a Malpositioned Intravenous Catheter.

Indocyanine green (ICG) is a water-soluble, iodine-containing molecule with a wide variety of applications in various fields of medicine. In this paper, we report an adverse event of ICG infiltration into subcutaneous tissue from a malpositioned intravenous (IV) catheter. Although ICG can be injected intradermally and subcutaneously for sentinel lymph node biopsy in breast cancer surgery, no reports exist regarding inadvertent infiltration from an IV catheter.

Observational records show that occurrences of the negative polarity of the Southern Annular Mode (low SAM) is significantly linked to El Niño during austral spring and summer, potentially providing long-lead predictability of the SAM and its associated surface climate conditions. In this study, we explore how this linkage may change under a scenario of a continuation of the ocean temperature trends that have been observed over the past 60 years, which are plausibly forced by increasing greenhouse gas concentrations. We generated coupled model seasonal forecasts for three recent extreme El Niño events by initialising the forecasts with observed ocean anomalies of 1 September 1982, 1997 and 2015 added into (1) the current ocean mean state and into (2) the ocean mean state updated to include double the recent ocean temperature trends.

Volatile biomarkers in the breath of women with breast cancer.

We sought biomarkers of breast cancer in the breath because the disease is accompanied by increased oxidative stress and induction of cytochrome P450 enzymes, both of which generate volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are excreted in breath. We analyzed breath VOCs in 54 women with biopsy-proven breast cancer and 204 cancer-free controls, using gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy. Chromatograms were converted into a series of data points by segmenting them into 900 time slices (8 s duration, 4 s overlap) and determining their alveolar gradients (abundance in breath minus abundance in ambient room air).

Competence to make treatment decisions in anorexia nervosa: thinking processes and values.

This paper explores the ethical and conceptual implications of the findings from an empirical study of decision-making capacity in anorexia nervosa. In the study, ten female patients aged 13 to 21 years with a diagnosis of anorexia nervosa, and eight sets of parents, took part in semi-structured interviews. The purpose of the interviews was to identify aspects of thinking that might be relevant to the issue of competence to refuse treatment.
