A multicentre prospective feasibility study of carbon dye tattooing of biopsied axillary node and surgical localisation in breast cancer patients.

Background: The primary aim of this prospective, multicentre feasibility study was to determine whether the biopsied axillary node can be marked using black carbon dye and successfully identified at the time of surgery.

Methods: We included breast cancer patients undergoing needle biopsy of the axillary node. The biopsied node was tattooed at the time of needle biopsy (fine needle aspiration or core biopsy) or at a separate visit with black carbon dye (Spot® or Black Eye™).

A prospective, single-arm, multicentre clinical evaluation of a new localisation technique using non-radioactive Magseeds for surgery of clinically occult breast lesions.

Aim: To evaluate the safety, usefulness, and outcome of Magseed localisation for surgery of non-palpable breast lesions in a non-experimental setting.

Materials And Methods: An audit was undertaken of a prospectively maintained database of patients who had undergone breast surgery under Magseed guidance in two high-volume institutions in the UK. Patients were selected for Magseed localisation depending on service convenience.

MR imaging of the urinary bladder.

MR imaging is the modality of choice for accurate local staging of bladder cancer. In addition, bladder MR imaging helps detect lymph node involvement, and in conjunction with computed tomography, provides complete staging. Familiarity with optimal imaging protocols, normal urinary bladder anatomy, and pathologic MR imaging appearances is essential for the radiologist.

The importance of ultrasound in staging and gaining a pathological diagnosis in patients with lung cancer--a two year single centre experience.

Background: Initial studies on the use of ultrasound in the detection and sampling of supraclavicular lymph nodes in patients with suspected lung cancer show this to be a promising technique, giving both a cytological diagnosis and pathological N3 (pN3) stage. Leicester published its initial experience in 2005 and the aim of this study was to establish if this had been embedded into the diagnostic pathway, and further to examine the use of ultrasound in diagnosing and staging lung cancer by imaging other areas including pleural effusions, chest wall, bone and liver lesions.

Methods: All patients diagnosed with lung cancer, registered on the Leicester lung cancer database over a two year period between January 2007 and December 2008, had their imaging and pathology retrospectively reviewed; 996 primary lung cancer patients were identified (n=996).

Altered endothelin receptor subtypes in colorectal cancer.

Background: The vasoactive peptide endothelin-1 (ET-1) acts via two endothelin receptor subtypes, ETA (ETAR) and ETB (ETBR). ET-1 and ETAR are overexpressed in colorectal cancer tissues. In vitro, ET-1 acting via ETAR, is a mitogen for colorectal cancer cells.

Inflammatory pseudotumour of the liver: the residuum of a biliary cystadenoma?

Inflammatory pseudotumour is a rare form of a liver mass. We report the case of a 28-year-old man presenting with obstructive jaundice, in whom an inflammatory pseudotumour arose with the resolution of a mucus secreting cystic liver lesion. The initial features suggested an intrahepatic cystadenoma or cystadenocarcinoma, which on its involution left a solid mass.
