We report four patients with internuclear ophthalmoplegia and torsional nystagmus, ipsiversive to the side of the medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF) lesion. The MLF lesion could be responsible for an inactivation of the ipsilateral interstitial nucleus of Cajal inducing a contraversive slow phase. The presence of a corrective ipsiversive quick phase implicates an intact rostral interstitial nucleus of the MLF.

We present the distinct clinical symptoms and stigmata in 4.5 years old monozygotic male twins: macrocephaly, hypospadias grade III-IV, moderate mental retardation and fragile X-like behavior. Chromosome studies were normal and no FMR-1 mutation could be detected.

Thirty-six edentulous patients, each provided with two Bränemark implants in the mandible to anchor an overdenture, were selected for this study and randomly divided into three groups of 12 patients each. In each group a different attachment system was used: (1) magnets, (2) ball attachments, and (3) straight bars with clips (control). The mean loading time was 12.

We studied 200 female patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) to investigate whether pregnancy after the onset of disease influences long term disability. As an index of progression, we used the time between disease onset and wheelchair dependence. Patients who had at least one pregnancy after onset were wheelchair dependent after 18.

Two hundred twenty patients fulfilling the Poser diagnostic criteria for definite and probable multiple sclerosis (MS) were ascertained in an area of Flanders (Belgium) including the city of Leuven through the general practitioners and the neurologists practicing in the area, through the medical records of the National Center for MS and through the membership list of the MS patient society. Leuven is located at a latitude of 50 degrees 53 N. A prevalence rate of 73.

The efficacy and safety of etodolac and naproxen were compared in a double-blind, randomized, parallel-group outpatient study. Patients with acute sports injuries were assigned to receive either etodolac 300 mg TID (50 patients) or naproxen 500 mg BID (49 patients) for up to 7 days. Assessments were made at the pretreatment screening (baseline) and at days 2, 3, 4, and 7 of treatment.

A population-based study of pairs of relatives (siblings, second- and third-degree) concordant for multiple sclerosis did not show an excess of like-sexed pairs. In addition, data on human lymphocyte antigen typing for sibling pairs concordant for multiple sclerosis did not find an increase in haplotype sharing for like-sexed pairs. These data do not support the notion that sex-related factors influence multiple-sclerosis susceptibility in families.

The cytotoxicity, biological transformation and interaction with plasma membranes of alpha Ni3S2 and beta NiS were studied on human embryonic pulmonary epithelial cells (L132 cell line) in culture. By establishing growth curves and survival curves, it was found that at equal molarity beta NiS has a higher inhibitory effect on cell growth than alpha Ni3S2 but a lower cytotoxic effect: the CL50 being 60 and 40 mumols/l respectively. As to their uptake, beta NiS crystals are preferentially phagocytized in their original form and then probably dissolved in the vacuoles, whereas alpha Ni3S2 is transformed in the extracellular space and in the phagocytic vacuoles into minute particles (10 nm) that are recovered bound to the cell membrane, phagocytic vacuoles and lysosomal membranes respectively.

We propose an additive model for cell population growth which allows for positive correlation between sister cell lifetimes but arbitrary correlations between mother and daughter cell lifetimes. In the model each cell lifetime is the sum of two independent components, one of which is shared with its sister cell and which is also a function of the components of the lifetime of their mother. Assuming that the components follow a gamma distribution, the model is fitted to cell lifetime data of EMT6 cells obtained by the method of time-lapse cinematography.
