Azathioprine/hydroxyurea preconditioning prior to nonmyeloablative matched sibling donor hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in adults with sickle cell disease: A prospective observational cohort study.

Nonmyeloablative, matched sibling donor hematopoietic stem cell transplantation with alemtuzumab/total body irradiation (TBI) conditioning is a curative therapy with low toxicity for adults with sickle cell disease (SCD). However, relatively low donor chimerism levels and graft rejection remain important challenges. We hypothesized that adding azathioprine/hydroxyurea preconditioning will improve donor chimerism levels and reduce graft failure rate.

Physical, Mental, and Social Health of Adult Patients with Sickle Cell Disease after Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation: A Mixed-Methods Study.

Patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) experience a considerable physical and psychosocial disease burden. In recent years, the application of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) to treat adults with SCD has increased. A thorough understanding of patients' physical, mental, and social health before and after cure is needed to meet the needs of this growing group of patients.

To strike or not to strike? an investigation of the determinants of strike participation at the Fridays for Future climate strikes in Switzerland.

The Fridays for Future strikes involve students striking for increased action on climate change, and this movement has spread to 185 countries and received widespread media attention. This exploratory study investigates motives for participating or not in the climate strikes and future participation among students in Switzerland. In a sample of N = 638 university students, we found that trust in climate scientists, low trust in governments, response efficacy, protest enjoyment and the perceived success of the strikes predicted participation.

Tampering with Nature: A Systematic Review.

Tampering with nature has been shown to be a strong, and sometimes even the strongest, predictor of the risk perception and acceptance of various technologies and behaviors, including environmental technologies, such as geoengineering. It is therefore helpful to understand what tampering with nature is as a construct, to which factors it relates, and when a technology or behavior is perceived as such. By means of a systematic review, we show that very little systematic research has been conducted on tampering with nature.

An analysis of factors affecting tourists' accounts of weather in South Africa.

There is consensus within tourism research that tourists are sensitive to weather. The climate of a destination is believed to influence the selection of a destination, the timing of the visit and the enjoyment of the destination. The climatic suitability of locations for tourism is often evaluated using indices of climatic data, including the Tourism Climatic Index and the Climate Index for Tourism.

[Puerperal fever: an old enemy in aggressive form].

Two previously healthy women, aged 30 and 35 years, suffered pain in the lower abdomen, one before and the other after spontaneous delivery at 40 and 33 4/7 weeks of amenorrhoea, respectively, while a third woman, aged 33, at 36 weeks of amenorrhoea developed pain in the lower abdomen, fever, vomiting, and diarrhoea. All three women were found to have a uterine infection caused by streptococci of Lancefield group A (group A Streptococcus, GAS). In one woman, the diagnosis was made rapidly so that antibiotic treatment could be instituted in time; the other two developed sepsis and multiorgan failure, with a fatal issue in one of them.

Oral versus im administration of high-dose medroxyprogesterone acetate in pretreated patients with advanced breast cancer.

In a multicenter trial, 123 patients with advanced breast cancer who had been treated with tamoxifen and/or chemotherapy were randomized to receive medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) orally 300 mg X 3 daily or im 500 mg daily for 4 weeks and 500 mg X 2 weekly thereafter. All case histories were reviewed extramurally by the criteria of the International Union Against Cancer. Five and 11 patients were not eligible and evaluable for response, respectively.

Phase II trial of 5-fluorouracil, adriamycin and cisplatin (FAP) in advanced gastric cancer.

Twenty patients (15 male, 5 female) with nonresectable gastric adenocarcinoma were treated with FAP (5-fluorouracil 300 mg/m2 IV on days 1-5, adriamycin 50 mg/m2 IV on day 1, cisplatin 20 mg/m2 IV on days 1-5). Each course was repeated every 21 days. Eighteen patients were evaluable for response.
