Genetic relatedness of virulent and avirulent strains of Marek's disease virus.

Comparative studies using Southern blot hybridization indicated that the avirulent strains of Marek's disease virus (MDV) were probably generated through DNA rearrangement that occurred in the limited area(s) of the virulent MDV genome.

[Neoplastic cardiac tamponade].

Pericardial metastases are frequently found and often cause cardiac tamponade which requires emergency treatment. Pericardiocentesis or subxiphoid pericardiotomy and pericardial drainage can be performed; the latter is a safe and effective method for the management of continuous pericardial effusion since it can be done under direct visualization and local anesthesia. We had four patients with neoplastic cardiac tamponade who were treated successfully with subxiphoid pericardiotomy and pericardial drainage.

Influence of single doses of dothiepin and amitriptyline on physiological measures and psychomotor performance in normal young and elderly volunteers.

The subjects were 14 (7 young and 7 elderly) men. Self-rating, and physiological and psychological measurements were applied, and experiments were performed 24 h after drug administrations. 25 mg dothiepin hydrochloride (DP) decreased critical flicker frequency less than 25 mg AMP in both age groups.

Age differences in effects on blood pressure, flicker fusion frequency, salivation and pharmacokinetics of single oral doses of dothiepin and amitriptyline.

Blood pressure, critical flicker fusion frequency (CFF), salivary flow rate and pharmacokinetics were compared in 7 young healthy volunteers (average age: 22.7 years) and in 7 elderly healthy volunteers (average age: 70.6 years) after single oral doses of the antidepressants dothiepin (DP) 25 mg and amitriptyline (AMP) 25 mg.

Monoclonal antibodies specific to and cross-reactive with Marek's disease virus and herpesvirus of turkeys.

In order to identify the specific and cross-reactive antigens to Marek's disease virus (MDV) and herpesvirus of turkeys (HVT), we prepared hybridomas producing monoclonal antibodies against these viruses. These monoclonal antibodies were screened by the indirect immunofluorescence method. The purified virus-specific antigens appeared to be more effective immunogens than unpurified virus-infected cell homogenates.

[Evaluation of early coronary artery reconstruction in acute myocardial infarction--time limit in the therapeutic effectiveness in relation to restoration of localized myocardial contraction].

The effects of 1 hour, 3 hours and 10 days coronary artery reperfusion after 20 minutes, 40 minutes, 3 hours, 4 hours and 5 hours coronary artery occlusion on the contractility of myocardium was studied by the strain gauge arch, and the myocardial changes was also studied histologically. Results obtained were follows. In the short term reperfusion study: 1) Dyskinesis disappeared in all cases if reperfusion was begun after 20 minutes of ischemia.

Time limit for early coronary artery revascularization. Restoration of contractility in reperfused myocardium in dogs.

The present study was undertaken to establish the time limit until the beginning of reperfusion that would permit restoration of contractility in acute myocardial infarction, and to confirm the delayed recovery of dyskinesis in ischemic area followed by reperfusion. Studies were carried out in 31 dogs of which 29 had temporary (20 min to 5 hours) occlusion of the left anterior descending coronary artery with short or long term reperfusion, and 2 had permanent occlusion. Dyskinesis was detected with tension curve obtained using a strain gauge arch.

[Cast structures and mechanical properties of Ir added to Ag-based alloys. (Part 1) (author's transl)].

The effect of very small quantity of Ir added to pure Agb or Ab-based casting alloys on the mechanical properties were investigated by microstructure observation, tensile test, XMA (electron probe micro analysis) and electrical resistivity measurement. 1) An addition of 0.005% Ir to pure Ag caused grain refinement, increased elongation, yield point, tensile strength.

[Studies on the activity level of the cerebral cortex by the noise exposure -- with regard to the function of maintaining concentration (TAF) and average auditory evoked response (AER) (author's transl)].

Subjects were exposured to two qualitatively different kind of noise (white noise and variable noise) with the same sound pressure of 90 phon for one hour as the mental stress. Changes of the function of maintaining concentration (TAF), flicker fusion (Ff), EEG and average auditory evoked response (AER) caused by this noise exposure were analyzed. The results obtained are as follows: 1) TAF-L and TAF-D of the white noise group after the exposure significantly lowered in comparison with the values before exposure, whereas in the variable noise group they tended to lower after the exposure.

[Age--hardening in Au-8wt%Pd alloys containing small quantities of indium (part 1) (author's transl)].

Age-hardening was produced by the additions of minor amounts of indium to a Au-Pd-base alloy for metal-ceramics, as in the Au-Pt-based ternary alloys. (1) The age-hardening, detected from the electrical resistance measurement and hardness test, increased with increasing indium contents in the Au-Pd-In ternary alloys, but was not responsible in a Au-Pd-base alloy. (2) Photomicrographs of the ternary alloys demonstrated the characteristic microstructures in the age-hardened state, but did not appear the intragranular precipitations in the as-casted and the solution-annealed state.

[Treadmill exercise testing in patients with idiopathic cardiomyopathy (author's transl)].

Multistage treadmill stress testing was performed in 24 patients with idiopathic cardiomyopathy using Bruce protocol. 5 patients were considered to have hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM), 12 hypertrophic nonobstructive cardiomyopathy (HCM) and 7 congestive cardiomyopathy (CCM). Heart rate, systemic blood pressure, electrocardiographic changes and exercise tolerance were observed.

Toxicity of heavy metals and insecticides on slime mold Physarum polycephalum.

Toxicity of heavy metals and insecticides on the slime mold Physarum polycephalum was investigated in order to examine and estimate with ease the toxicity of environmental and occupational contaminants and also to study the effects of various agents on the cell membrane. Changes in survival time and in membrane potential of the slime mold were measured using a double chamber method. The results obtained suggest that their toxicity for the slime mold is accompanied by some change in the cell membrane, and that studies on toxicity for various chemical substances in the slime mold can be used as a screening method.
